Should the Diamondbacks re-acquire Reynolds?

So the Orioles are not playing well at the moment and Mark Reynolds may be one of the player on the trading block. He's hitting better this year and striking out less. The Diamondbacks have not been getting much production of 3rd base recently and adding another power bat wouldn't hurt. I think as long as we don't have to give up much (maybe Esmerling Vasquez and David Nick?) we should try to get him back.

I would LOL

so hard if we re-aquired him.

And so happy. Basically Vasquez for David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio? Yes please.

well is there a semi decent package to be assembled?

wily veteran Geoff Blum, Esme Vasquez, Armando Gallaraga, Cole Gillespie, Brandon Allen, Kevin Mulvey and Tony Abreu or even Wily Mo Pena… I’d happily assemble a conglomeration of any four of these guys to get the Sheriff back and a middle relief arm. Hell, I’d be happy to include Juan Gutierrez into the mix if that made it possible.

Why would the Orioles do it?

Seems like they’d have egg on their face. And they’re not an organization that is exactly trying to drop payroll. And that doesn’t even bring up Towers’ hatred of players with that kind of k rate.

i think Towers' hatred of players

with that kind of k rate is overblown. he picked up Branyan. he’s letting Wily Mo stay up in the majors. he hasn’t traded away KJ yet, despite the k-rate.

Maybe it was. Maybe it wasn't.

Either way, let’s hope he’s learned his lesson that Melvin Mora < Mark Reynolds.

I would not be against this

But I don’t know if the Orioles would bite

by SenSurround on Jul 9, 2011 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

There is no way the Orioles would do that deal

Maybe Brandon Allen and Demel. Also I’m pretty sure Towers doesn’t want him on the team.

One Thought

A question I had back at the time of the Reynolds trade was that I wondered if he would have benefited from the coaching of Don Baylor, who’s had some success with teaching patience to big swinging power hitters.
If we could get him cheap enough, I think it would be worth trying.

I'm working my way to grumpy old curmudgeon status with all the grace I can muster.

1under

Absolutely. Those hitting “coaches” had him badly messed up. Baylor could fix his swing and attitude at the plate.

Need to offer lots more

Cowgill could be included. Eaton, perhaps. Demel makes some sense. Allen would be a guy we’d love to include, but I’m not sure if Baltimore bites. Wade Miley could be a nice piece to move.

David Nick is not a good prospect (grade C), and Esmerling Vasquez has never had success in the major leagues.

I haven't seen Reynolds play this year

But both traditional and new stats say he’s been horrible in the field. As such, I don’t think he’ll be worth the money and the prospects we would theoretically send to Baltimore.

by paqs on Jul 9, 2011 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

His bat has been solid enough

To compensate for it. He isn’t this bad in the field, and although I think he’d cost a team at least a win per year in the field compared to an average third baseman, his bat looks like it’ll make up for it in the long-run.

Even if it doesn’t work out that way, how bad of a left fielder/first baseman could Mark really be?

the defense is worrisome

that was actually my biggest concern after last season, was that i didn’t see his one-year improvement in UZR as sustainable, especially considering his power profile

i also thought his defensive stats might have been inflated a little by LaRoche at 1B

or he could apply himself to the task

like he did playing 3rd and become better

I think his range would be fine

He’ll just have to learn how to move around the bag and dig.

I don’t see this as a possibility. I think Paqs is right

No offense?

Seriously?

I think the only reason you’re opposed to it is because it’d block your boy Roberts. Sorry, but he’s a much better hitter than RyRo. You have to admit that, at least. The defense is a different story though… but could Matty fix him again?

No

I didn’t mean Mark can’t hit. Mark can hit…

I just don’t see him coming back here is all. I think KT will go elsewhere if he’s really wanting 3B help.

No

That’s not how I see it at all, actually. I see things as we need bullpen help more than anything, not third base help.

we need more bullpen help and not more hits/runs which is what Reynolds is good for.

Bullpen help

Is definitely needed at this point, but having a 30+ HR guy on your team isn’t a bad thing either.

If we switched Reynold's over to 1st

I feel his errors would be cut in half. Most of his Error’s are throwing Error’s. This is what bugged me in the trade. We should have tried him full time 1st base.

His Avg, is up this yr, and His power is still there. And less than 100K’s at the break. I have him on my Fantasy team, and what made me sad was during interleague play, he was crushing the ball.

I would love for him to come back and play 1st base for us. Then giving Goldy his spot at 3rd. But this is whishful thinking.

Goldy can't play 3B.....

he’d be the worst defensive 3B in the majors…and it wouldn’t be close….
