Diamondbacks Farm Round-Up 7/5: Singles Galore Edition

Juan Miranda, here seen receiving a mystery hi-five, wasn't the only first baseman in the D-backs organization who flashed some heavy power on Tuesday.

It was truly a night of many singles, as D-backs farmhands accumulated 38 singles despite having only five games on Tuesday.  No affiliate's offense managed more than two extra-base hits on the night, and there wasn't a particularly flashy or dominant starting pitching outing on the night, either.  One batter who wasn't plagued by the team's singles-happy approach was, well, exactly who you'd expect to be mashing the ball in the D-backs system when nobody else is...

Snakelet of the Day:

Paul Goldschmidt (Double-A): 2-4, 2 2B, BB, K

Star-divide

Triple-A: Reno had an off-day, and will begin action again Wednesday.

Double-A: Mobile 10, Birmingham 2.  (47-36)  In spite of the high run output, the only BayBears bat to notch even a single extra base hit was (Your Daily) Paul Goldschmidt, who went 2-4 with a pair of doubles, a walk, and a strikeout to lead the Mobile charge.  Thankfully, the three bats in the lineup preceding Goldschmidt - ninth-hitter Ollie Linton, then 1-2 hitters Adam Eaton and A.J. Pollock - all reached base three times, as Linton and Pollock each hit a pair of singles and drew a walk, while Eaton whacked three base hits.  Starter Wes Roemer only lasted five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, a pair of walks, and a hit-by-pitch.  However, Bryan Henry picked up a four-inning save in relief of Roemer, allowing no runs to seal the win.

Hi-A: Visalia 1, Inland Empire 6.  (37-45)  The Rawhide mustered as many extra-base hits as the BayBears did one level above them, but the overall results were far more underwhelming.  Matt Davidson and David Nick hit doubles for the Rawhide, but the team managed just five hits overall, reaching base just seven times (Nick was responsible for three of them, as he also singled and walked).  Eric Smith posted one of the first lines of good peripherals he's had this year, with a 4:1 K:BB ratio and his usual good ground ball rate - a 9:3 GO:AO.  The results weren't great - 5.2 innings, 4 runs, 3 earned - but the peripherals are a good sign for a pitcher who's struggled all year.

Low-A: South Bend 5, Dayton 7.  (39-42)  South Bend took a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning after being down 4-0, but the offense stalled out and the bullpen re-coughed up the game.  Starter Bradin Hagens had a short day, lasting just 4.2 innings and giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, with a 4:1 K:BB ratio.  The offense managed just three hits, and Zach Walters' double was the team's only extra-base hit in the contest.  The Silver Hawks were helped out by five hit-by-pitches from Dayton starter Kyle Lotzkar to rally in the fifth.

Short-Season-A: Yakima 4, Boise 5.  (6-13)  A three-run ninth sent the game into extra-inning, but Boise walked it off in the bottom of the tenth off of Yakima reliever Miles Reagan.  Catcher Jae Yun Kim had a solid day at the plate, going 2-5 with a double and a strikeout.  Kerry Jenkins had four hits for the Bears, and while Jimmy Comerota had three hits and a walk.  Starter Alex Capaul gave up four runs in 4.2 innings of work, but John Pedrotty was solid in relief, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings in spite of a 2:3 K:BB ratio to help the Bears come back.

Advanced-Rookie: Missoula 7, Helena 6.  (8-8)  Starter Robby Rowland struggled, giving up five runs, four earned, in five innings of work, striking out one, walking two, and allowing a home run in spite of an 11:1 GO:AO ratio.  As seems to be a pattern in the D-backs system on this night, only one Osprey bat managed to record an extra-base hit, as Jeremia Gomez doubled, his only hit on the night.  Jon Griffin had three hits and a walk, while Josh Parr also recorded three knocks.

Low-Rookie: The AZL-D-backs were off on Tuesday, will play again Wednesday.

DSL: DSL action was postponed yet again due to rain.

Paul Goldschmidt, in my opinion

Reasonable Upside: 300/400/550
Reasonable Floor: 260/340/460

Reasonable Median Outcome: 270/370/520

In the big leagues?

I think Diamondbacks fans would take that. I think the floor of his slugging might be higher than that, but overall, agree with those numbers.

if you're not reading my stuff at sportshaze.com/phoenix, please do, because I like money.

the reason why the floor slugging is lower

is because if he strikes out an insane amount, then it will affect the chances he hits home runs

It would be good if he figures out how to keep

the Ks down before he hits the majors. One of the reasons why I don’t think rushing him up would be a good move.

but yeah, i sort of agree

that’s why i skewed the median outcome closer to his ceiling SLG than his floor SLG

Floor lower

Carlos Pena-level batting averages possible. Not probable, just possible.

Floor IMO: .220/.300/.400

There’s a real chance he flops. I’m optimistic, but we can’t ignore the Shelly Duncan’s (sp?) of the world.

Reno

had a rain out, in Tucson versus the T-Pads (as the local media is calling them). Real good chance of another rain out today. The game will be made up in August I think.

I got nothin'.

i hope it doesn't rain out

cause we’ve got tickets :(

I don't let facts get in the way of my opinion.

40% chance of rain tonight. Storms would be scattered

And not as high winds as last night. So there’s a decent chance it’ll get in

Roemer

He also had 5 strikeouts, and after the first settled in and pitched pretty well, considering it rained for most of the game, making the mound conditions a mess. He “only lasted” five innings due to a long delay in the sixth while the mound was worked on, making it a half hour before the iniing was over, or else he would have gone back out for the bottom of the sixth.
