SnakeBytes 7/27: Almost Edition
Hey, almost pitching a complete game shutout is still pretty good, Joe. We'll definitely take it.
Recaps:
-
[FS Arizona] Saunders and D-backs beat Padres 6-1 - Good work from all over the offense, really- with some help from Orlando Hudson, of course.
-
[DBacks.com] Johnson, Upton make Saunders' win easy - Only six hits allowed in the complete game by Joe Saunders? Good outing.
-
[AZ Central] Arizona Diamondbacks top San Diego Padres behind Joe Saunders' complete game gem - Willie Bloomquist has done a great job of stepping up for this team and helping out when Stephen Drew has gone down to injury, both at the start of the year and in the past handful of games.
-
[SignOnSanDiego.com] Hudson's blunder one of Padres' mistakes in loss - Dustin Moseley dislocated his shoulder on his non-throwing arm in the third inning, and still pitched seven. That's pretty hardcore.
DBacks News:
-
[DBacks.com] Bauer could be September addition to 'pen - They want to have Trevor Bauer pitch 30 to 40 innings this year, and he won't get that in the minors, so we might see him on the mound in Chase Field this year.
-
[DBacks Venom] More Details on Trevor Bauer's Contract - Interesting to see how the potential difference is split. If they're talking about possibly seeing Bauer up in September, I don't think there's much chance he won't be in the majors in 2012.
-
[AZ Central] Arizona Diamondbacks look for reliever as trade deadline looms - Kevin Towers still thinks we'll be able to get a reliever to help out this year and next. So, what arms are up for trade that has another year on their contract?
-
[Reno Gazette-Journal] Hinxman: For Aces' Schmidt, 'K' doesn't stand for strikeout - When Konrad Schmidt was 16, he was a pitcher. One game, a ball hit him in the forehead, and richocheted to the dugout. Konrad shook it off, and a few innings later, hit a grand slam. That sums up a lot about him, I think.
Around Baseball:
-
[Baseball Nation] Edwin Jackson Trade Sends Righty, Mark Teahen To Blue Jays For Jason Frasor, Zach Stewart - According to what I've seen, it's (sort of?) a three way trade between the White Sox, the Blue Jays, and the red Cardinals. Edwin Jackson's second three-way trade, and he'll be on his third team in less than a year.
-
[MLB.com] Angels' Santana spins no-hitter against Indians - While Ervin Santana may have been on his game, the Indians defense was not- five errors? Ouch.
-
[Yahoo! Sports] Pirates brass file complaint over 19-inning loss - Is there really anything that can be done about it at this point?
-
[HardballTalk] The Cubs tried to deal Carlos Zambrano to the Yankees - I'm curious how that phone call went. "Sure, he's making $18 million and his ERA is 4.70.... But he knows how to win! Hello? Hello? I think my phone dropped the signal..."
Hey, and the Mariners finally won a game! Hooray.

Edwin Jackson
Apparenty the most tradable commodity ever.
I'm a Cardinals fan.
So I’m not quite sure how I feel about that.
Yay?
But they got 3 PTBNLs and cash too.

I don't mind it for STL
I’m beginning to think that Toronto gave up too much in money, comp picks, and moderately-useful players just to get Colby Rasmus. The kid is good, but that’s a lot of quantity to cough up, and that Teahen contract is absolutely brutal.

I guess the Cards still have 4 days to flip Edwin Jackson.
Flip him to KC for Hosmer and a couple more prospects. /jk

I think the big thing
Will be to see if the three PTBNL’s amount to anything.

Most speculation
is that these are going to be “lesser” prospects.

Point.
But PTBNL are almost always just lousy (or non-)prospects, rather than recent draft picks.
HEY, FRENCHY! STAR TREK OR STAR WARS?
Probably
But they have a list they get to pick from at the end of the year. You never know who will break out at some point or add a tick or two to their velo out of nowhere.

really?
i love the Blue Jays side.
they basically didn’t have to give up anyone integral to their long-term success. and they managed to get Rasmus.
the only concern i have about Rasmus is his defense. in fact, i’d seriously consider moving him to a corner. unless of course they trust their scouts and think the defensive metrics are wack.
otherwise, i see a guy who’s adjusting his approach to cut his K’s, but hasn’t quite figured it out to the point where he can hit like 2010 yet. similar to what happened to Upton at the beginning of the year when he was slumping but his K rate was drastically reduced. now Upton’s turned into a monster, and while i don’t think Rasmus has Upton upside, i think he’s still going to be a perennial 130 wRC+ guy.

They took a big hit to their 'pen for the next few years
I guess this is a future-oriented move, but Rasmus only has three years of control after this year, and they’re all arb years. Dude hit the majors REALLY young. I dunno, I just wouldn’t be shocked if Rasmus regressed some.

So much
for the Dbacks landing Frasor.
On another note, remember when, last year, the White Sox paid up the nose for Edwin Jackson, expecting to flip him to the Nats for Adam Dunn, which didn’t happen?
Lulz.

…and when Konrad Schmidt was 18, he invaded Poland with the Wehrmacht.
Sorry. I just love that name.

When Konrad Schmidt was 21
He was hired by Ming the Merciless to stop Flash Gordon. Obviously, it didn’t work out, but he still has that scar, and he’ll never forget….
It is a great name.

"While we cannot begin to understand how umpire Jerry Meals did not see the tag made by Michael McKenry(notes) three feet in front of home plate, we do not question the integrity of Mr. Meals. Instead, we know that Mr. Meals’ intention was to get the call right. Jerry Meals has been umpiring Major League games for 14 years and has always done so with integrity and professionalism. He got this one wrong."
I’m not really sure what they’re complaining about, then.

Beltran to SF
Looks like deal will be done tonight… Go phillies!
I will LMAO if Beltran gets cold and does nothing for SF!
Freeze it..and make a popsicle
I think we can put any 1B
We have had on our roster at any point this year, and say, “Isn’t there someone else?”
Two Month Rental of Beltran.
In exchange for the Giants top pitching prospect in Zach Wheeler. Its shaping up to be an arms race for the NL West future, and the Giants just took a step back to fight for the WS this year. With the arms we have in the system now plus the pitchers we just drafted we are sitting pretty here in the desert. And in the offseason it won’t be cheap to resign Beltran if they go that route, so less money for them to allocate elsewhere which isn’t bad for the Dbacks either.

Yeah
I think the long-term burn of that trade and the questionable short-term prospects we already had mean that it’s not going to change too much for us now, and it’ll help us out in the future, so I’m not too broken up on that deal.
"Never ignore a coincidence. Unless you're busy, in which case always ignore a coincidence."
If anything,
there may be a lot of inherent value in being in contention at this point even if we fade, both for that reason and a few others (like increased attendance, confidence, whatever else).
Would a run scored on a wild pitch be considered an Earned Run...
If the baserunner reached off a hit? Kinda weird to see a no hitter AND an a run scored…
It is an earned run.

Passed ball is a catcher error,
so…

As Jenny says so eloquently below.......
The runner reached on an error, so how he scores is irrelevant.

Which is then an error on the pitcher, right?
So it STILL doesn’t matter.
You can have an ERA of 1 and still throw a no-hitter, though, because reaching on a walk does count towards ERA. (Which is not applicable in this case anyway.)

Scoring on a WP
is ruled an earned run, though. (If you reached via hit or walk)
