SnakeBytes 7/21: Day After Edition
I feel like I'm still sort of in shock over last night's game. Just kind of left you feeling sick, in every way.
Recaps:
-
[Dbacks.com] After losing Drew to injury, D-backs fall in 10th - Losing the game was bad enough...
-
[AZ Central] Arizona Diamondbacks' Stephen Drew fractures ankle in loss to Milwaukee Brewers - If you haven't watched the replay of Drew's injury, I envy you.
-
[FS Arizona] D-backs lose Drew, lose game to Brewers - "It was a tough night overall." That's putting it lightly, Joe Saunders.
-
[JSOnline] Wednesday game report: Brewers at Diamondbacks - Frustrating to lose a game that we had such a chance to win.
Ugh, just scrolling past the pictures of the injury turns my stomach...
DBacks News:-
[The D-Blog] D-backs’ Blum thrilled to be back on the field -Geoff Blum has hit home runs in 27 different ballparks in his time in the majors. He's played a little shortstop, too...
-
[DBacks.com] Ryan Cook shocked to get callup from D-backs - Man, he should read the Snakepit more often, then.
-
[FS Arizona] Diamondbacks must press on without Drew - It's almost impossible to make it through the whole season without an injury like this hurting a team's chances. They'll just have to work past it.
-
[Hardball Times] Roberto Alomar career highlights - The first member of the Diamondbacks to enter the Hall of Fame.... Sure, his time with us wasn't the peak of his career, but it's still nice to see.
-
[Deadspin] If This Doesn't Warm Your Heart, You're Awful - One of the few bright parts of last night's game. Good for that kid.
-
[FanGraphs] Replacing Stephen Drew - Obviously, someone needs to take the starts at shortstop. Who should it be? (High five to the guy in the comments who refers to Ryan Roberts as the Dread Pirate.)
Around Baseball:
-
[Baseball Nation] Orlando Hudson Injury: Padres 2B Carted From Field - O-Dawg went after a foul ball and crashed into the wall. Paramedics came onto the field and he was eventually put on a back-board to be driven off the field. Hopefully that was just a precaution, but it seems serious.
-
[HardballTalk] Mike Rizzo and the Nationals are feuding with their own Single-A team and things are getting ugly - Interesting, I just assumed that the Nationals would have a more direct influence on how the facility of their minor league teams are maintained...
-
[FanGraphs] The Three Best Double Plays Ever - How does a double play earn you +26.2% WPA? Well, there need to be some extenuating circumstances.... But I'm more curious about the third place play. How do you give up two runs on a double play?
-
[Big League Stew] Poor Ozzie: Ball hits him in eye, White Sox lose on wild pitch, he rants - Aw, part of Ozzie lives for these opportunities.
-
[SI.com] Mariners lose 12th straight, 7-5 to Blue Jays - Remember back when everyone was amazed that the Pirates, Indians, DBacks, and Mariners were all in contention? Well, things ain't looking so good in Seattle...

Just announced
Phils sign P Aaron Heilman to minor league contract. He will go to AAA

Well
I’m pretty sure he’ll be able to work his way into their major league rotation easily enough.
Yup, any day now…

And if he does?

Then
Given the Phillies current starting rotation and the number of injuries that it would require for Heilman to make starts in the majors, I expect the wailing and gnashing of teeth from Phillies fans to be strong enough to knock the earth out of orbit, so baseball would hardly be our biggest of concerns.

But if he made it to the playoffs,
it might mean that the outcome could be the opposite.

Well
Should the Phillies make the playoffs (likely) and Heilman’s on their roster (unlikely) it would have to be in the scenario kishi described.

Any idea what you really said there?

Yes

I thought so,
words strung together to form a sentence lacking substance.

I like this post
It’s very meta.

as a lawyer
i can’t help but hope for a clarifying comment on what exactly defines “work his way into [the Phillies’] major league rotation”
by blue bulldog on Jul 22, 2011 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions
Well
“Work his way” seems to imply that it would be on merit, rather than the unfortunate consequence of a flu outbreak

Tough day for Dbacks players and former players
Is it some kind of omen that our former amazing up-the-middle duo are both badly injured on the same day?

Yikes... hoping Hudson's okay.
Recent Stories sidebar for Baseball Nation says “Hudson Feeling Fine,” so that’s great news.
