Diamondbacks to call up Allen, Blum

So before tomorrow's game, the Diamondbacks will call up Brandon Allen and activate Geoff Blum from the DL. No corresponding moves have been announced but I guess Juan Miranda and Sean Burroughs will be designated for assignment. (Both would probably be sent to AAA) Ryan Roberts does have options but I don't think it'll happen. I think it's fair to give Allen a shot to be an actual starter as opposed to the inconsistent playing time he got the last two years and Blum needed to be activated

I thought

the D’Backs gave Miranda a very fair chance at first base, but his performance was simply not up to pennant-race standards. I suppose this would mean Brandon Allen would be ticketed for first base?

The other ticket for Reno may not be Burroughs, though. Bloomquist hasn’t exactly been tearing up the league.

Bloomquist

Has value as a super-utility guy and he’s the team’s best option for a pinch runner or late substitute.

And wouldn't Bloomquist have to

accept assignment?

that's the best shot Miranda is going to get

same thing for Allen in the second half

I’m fine that they gave Miranda such a long leash, actually. Given his age and his lack of opportunity I think the organization did the right thing. Now, hopefully, they’re doing the right thing in given Allen a shot. The kid deserves it. Hopefully he’ll be able to contribute some degree better than Miranda, and if he can’t after a couple months then it’ll be Goldie’s time.

Yep.

He probably is a AAAA player just like Miranda, but he deserves an opportunity to prove he’s not. It’s one of the real issues with Reno, having such an shaky grasp of who is good at all at that level.

You can't judge a guy until they get consistant playing time.

Upton’s first season. He hit just above 200. Allen showed improvement last year hitting 267. He could surprise us.

by rfffr on Jul 14, 2011 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Although

I agree with the idea that Allen needs more consistent playing time, Upton was also 19 and was definitely called up too quickly.

even Mickey Mantle was sent back down to the minors.

Thanks for posting this

I saw Nick’s tweets on the news but he’s not positive yet and since no corresponding roster moves have been announced, I’ll probably wait a bit before front-paging the story.

I have a feeling

This Blum thing is gonna just be horrible.

I wonder if they may be giving Allen a look at the big’s hoping he gets hot quick, then can be used as a trade chip for some pitching or LF. Spaking of LF, wonder if Allen will see some starts there as well, And Wily Mo will be back down to AAA

honestly

we were giving burroughs fairly consistent starts recently, blum can be nothing but an improvement.

You'd be surprised

Blum is genuinely terrible. Like, worse than Bloomquist. That said, I do think he’s slightly better than Burroughs, and more versatile.

yea i agree

i’m not here saying geoff blum is anything special, just better than whatever burroughs brought to the team. i figure blum is probably a better veteran leader too. i wanted them to bring up ransom, sure we know he is a AAAA player but if a guy is hot let it ride for as long as it lasts. he probably would be better than both blum and burroughs at this point, but ruins the platoon situation. in the end it is one replacement level player against another however we look at it.

by rapdawg on Jul 14, 2011 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt they trade for any bats at deadline.

John Gambadoro has reported they are only looking at starting and relief pitching.

Plus we are fine at LF… Don’t know why everyone is down on Parra.

by Pyromnc on Jul 14, 2011 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

If we could get a stop gap 1B or 3B for cheap then I’d do it (say Mark Reynolds or Aramis Ramirez or Carlos Pena), but otherwise, rolling with what we have is fine by me.

Eh, those teams are gonna ask for an arm and the leg for players like that.

If they are gonna trade the prospects to get someone like that go after a Gio Gonzalez or Grant Balfour type that could be here for a little while.

by Pyromnc on Jul 14, 2011 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think the Cubs would ask for much in terms of prospects

If we ate most of those huge contracts, which I thought we had a little money to do?

by SenSurround on Jul 14, 2011 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Im not down on Parra

Just pointing out that Allen has played LF for us and could split some time there. Especially if we call up Goldy or Pena gets sent down onstread or Miranda.

And i hope i am wrong about Blum, but i just see Mora all over again.

by Baja F1 on Jul 14, 2011 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

You're right

Both Allen and Blum are significantly more flexible position players than those they’re replacing. That’s a nice bonus.

by njjohn on Jul 14, 2011 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe but I doubt it.

Since both Parra and Allen are left handed hitters. I imagine they’d stick platooning Bloomquist and Parra there while Allen sticks at first.

But I see your point, extra flexibility.

by Pyromnc on Jul 14, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

For what it’s worth, Bloomquist has a wRC+ of 98 this season against lefties, in addition to playing a billion positions.

His career number is only 89, but in each of 2004, 2008, and 2010, he had at least 87 plate appearances vs. lefties and a wRC+ of 100 or better.

Small samples, but that’s — yes, believe it or not, that’s more than respectable.

I'm too lazy to look it up

but Dan says Blum can hit righties

by paqs on Jul 14, 2011 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Dan

keeps mentioning his 96 wRC+ against righties last year (185 PAs). Of course, last year was also Blum’s only season above 89 vs. RHB since his rookie year. In his career, he’s only at 83. And that was BEFORE microfracture surgery.

Yup, lefty Geoff Blum’s second best year against righties was still worse than righty Willie Bloomquist this year against lefties.

HEY, FRENCHY! STAR TREK OR STAR WARS?

by DbacksSkins on Jul 14, 2011 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

For the record, vs. lefties,

Brandon Allen’s wRC+ is 21, but in only 36 PAs.

Parra’s at 87 this year (62 PAs), 53 for his career (232 PAs).

Given his age, yes, he probably did. Might another team take a flier on him? Absolutely — Hell, maybe he’ll be the next Albert Pujols!*

if we try to move him. That’s probably why.

Of course, when Blum comes up, Miranda may go.

Well, this is fun.

Brandon Allen is back, but so is Geoff Blum.

Remaining on the roster:
Geoff Blum
Sean Burroughs (-0.1 WAR)
Willie Bloomquist (-0.2 WAR)
Xavier Nady (-0.2 WAR)

Sent down:
Wily Mo Pena (0.0 WAR)
Juan Miranda (0.3 WAR)

Crazy

So we took Burroughs over Wily Mo…for pinch hiting…..Burroughs wont see the field anymore. Come on Towers.

by Dbaxter17 on Jul 14, 2011 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Not necessarily...

He’ll just see less time as Blum can play the whole infield. I bet Burroughs will still get his reps at third.

by Pyromnc on Jul 14, 2011 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

With Wily mo gone

Like i suspected, allen may see some time in LF as well, or Roberts may move out there to free up the infield for Blum

Not happy about this

BA has been up before and he couldn’t do it then. Batting .300 with 18 dongs in AAA Reno does not translate into MLB success. BA will do almost exactly what Miranda did.
I wanted to see Goldie and Blum up, with Miranda and Burroughs down. Goldie full-time at first. Blum platoon with RyRo, RyRo spell Johnson at 2B against tough lefties, and Nady off the bench PH.
The changes today don’t change the roster or the impact quotient one iota.

I don't know why you're in such a hurry to have Goldy up here
