SnakeBytes 6/25: Rocking Edition
This may be brief. I'm still on the phone with NORAD, tracking that home run.
Recaps:
-
[DBacks.com] Pena, two big innings lead to victory - Don't get too cocky, Wily Mo. Your OPS on the season is still lower than Zach Duke's.
-
[FS Arizona] Pena's homer lifts D-backs over Tigers - Another rally from the team to fight back from an early deficit. They're getting pretty good at that.
-
[AZ Central] Wily Mo Pena lifts Diamondbacks past Tigers - To his credit, Pena's home run was the longest hit by a visiting player in Comerica Park. That's pretty cool, I guess.
-
[Bless You Boys] Wily Mo Pena breaks baseball, Tigers - As they sum it up: "Phil Coke fell apart. Detroit lost. Wily Mo Pena hit the ball far."
DBacks News:
-
[DBacks.com] Trammell knows his role in Detroit history - It's like homecoming week. Also: Kirk Gibson describes himself as fiery.
-
[Yahoo! Sports] Collmenter's homespun delivery is a sensation - Jeff Passan is pretty enamored with Josh Collmenter's pitching, it seems.
-
[AZ Central] Back in Detroit; Collmenter on his big day; Demel update; farm report; & other stuff - Interesting- among other notes, there's mention that someone on the roster got "fairly vocal and loud" with Gibson this year. Gibson didn't say who, though, so I'm curious. Maybe someone who's not with the team right now?
-
[Reno Gazette-Journal] Diamondbacks GM Towers praises Aces - Kevin Towers has been visiting our minor league teams this month, and is pretty pleased with our team in Reno- he calls it one of the better Triple-A teams he's worked with as a GM.
Around Baseball:
-
[SI.com] Prince Fielder, not Albert Pujols, may be top slugger on open market - Well, Fielder does certainly have an edge, being four years younger.
-
[Big League Stew] Mariners prevail in first NL game played in an AL ballpark - And I imagine there was about the same number of Marlins fans present either way.
-
[LA Times] Drop in Dodger Stadium attendance continues - You know how everyone was worrying about the drop in baseball attendance this year? A large part of that may be on the Dodgers- they're selling 20.8% fewer tickets per game this year than last.
-
[Baseball Nation] Tim Wakefield Is Probably A Wizard - Wait, Tim Wakefield is seriously the active career leader in wins?

Did anyone take
a poll of the fans as they were leaving the stadium to see if they liked having the NL rules in the AL ballpark? I’ve always thought that if baseball wanted to make interleague more interesting they should use the rules of the visiting league/team.
The irony of the Information Age is that it has given new respectability to uninformed opinions ~ Veteran reporter, John Lawton, 68, speaking to the American Association of Broadcast Journalists in 1995

Gibby seemed incredulous
that the reporters didn’t know whom he was talking about. So my guess is that it was Galarraga.
Yeah, that's who came to mind for me
I mean, either way, I wouldn’t expect Gibby to call out a player for it. I see him as a guy who’ll keep things in the clubhouse. But Galarraga’s the only one I can think of who we’ve seen have an outburst like that.

But the
“He took it. I’ll take it. If it’s going to make us better, I’ll do it." part would seem to rule that out.

Yes...
Or Upton possibly?

Currently watching the Indians and the Gnats
The Gnats can’t score, so Balkin’ Bob Davidson called a balk to bring in a Gnat run. I didn’t see the balk, although the wimps in the Fox booth claimed they saw it.
Bob Davidson, is that name familiar to D’Backs’ fans? Just let the teams win by virtue of their play, not some misguided effort to enforce hackneyed rules with no clear definition or use.
In other words, why is Bob Davidson even umpiring in the major leagues? Does he have compromising photos of Bud Selig?
"Oh, grow up 007. It's not a toy."
Yeah
I am very familiar with Davidson…alongside CB Buckethead, Bob Davidson is another umpiring fool

If the Gnats win
it wouldn’t have been because of anything they accomplished, but rather a couple of stupid errors by Indian’s second baseman and a mystery balk call.

Giants win from a balk
And we strike out a zillion times against Verlander.
This was not my favorite day in baseball history.
