SnakeSounds: 6/24 vs Tigers
Peña's from heaven...
-- Kirk Gibson
Welcome to #2 in our ongoing series of made-up, but (I would say) entirely plausible post-game quotes from our manager. It's amazing how one swing of a bat can turn a player from "sucking" [per blue bulldog] to...Well, a .933 OPS for Wily Mo Pena. The button brings you chat from Gibson, sucky starter Zach Duke, Pena and robust reliever Bryan Shaw who pitched two very valuable innings to keep us in the game.

I don't have any real reason to put this up here
but DFA DUKE and trade for Kuroda!

Duke is what he always has been,
and is probably the poster child for failed attempts to predict success based solely on advanced metrics. Based on this years splits, Duke should have some value as a LOOGY, but his career numbers don’t agree.
Unless LA is looking to dump Kuroda’s salary, I don’t think it has a chance of happening.

LA may not have any choice
but dump salaries, because there isn’t going to be any sudden influx of cash for a while.

I wouldn't want to give up much for 3 months of Kodura and the pleasure
of paying him 6M or so, especially since he is arb eligible, and not a free agent until 2014.

Well, think about it
his acquisition would be for this year’s pennant race. Next year, there are arms coming up through the system that might justify his one partial season’s employment. But as it stands, the current incumbent, Zach Duke, is not a competitive pennant race pitcher. However, I wrote elsewhere that I’m wondering if he has some kind of injury or tired arm because the stuff he displayed last night couldn’t possibly get him into the big leagues, let alone a position on a division-leader’s rotation.

My only concern would be the cost,
with the money being a secondary consideration. If Allen or someone else that is not likely to help the team in the future were traded, that would be OK, but not Collmenter, Cowgill, Owings, or some of the other players mentioned that could help the team now and/or in the future.
I still think the partially tested starter on hand would be a a good option, if his arm is up to it. The only thing to lose would be games that would be lost anyway. If it worked problem solved, if it didn’t he might do better in the pen since the pent up frustration from not starting would be out of his system. Losing the opportunity to potentially make 10s of millions in his prime has to have some effect on his psyche, and could he one of the reasons for his not infrequent bad outings, which usually end with him in control.
