The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have selected right-handed pitcher Bryan Shaw from Triple-A Reno and optioned left-handed pitcher Zach Kroenke to Reno, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Kevin Towers.
Shaw, 23, was a combined 4-1 with 10 saves, a 2.37 ERA (8 ER in 30.1 IP) and .207 opponents average (23-for-111) with 11 walks and 24 strikeouts in 23 games at Reno and Double-A Mobile. This will be Shaw’s first stint in the Majors. He will wear No. 37.

Coolness.
IHSB will be happy. Will he be in FL for the game today?
Did they send down Burroughs too? (Wishful thinking).
I got nothin'.
Nice!
Shocked (and a wee bit disappointed) to see Shaw above Kra-Kam on the depth chart, though. Still, I think this guy’s a big-league-caliber reliever.

Did they have to make
a 40-man roster move for him or not?

I hope Zach will work on what he needs to do in order to be called up again before September

Just heard on KTAR
That Putz is having lower back stiffness (think spring training) so it looks like Hernandez will be the closer for now. i think this move was made to get us a 8th inning guy.
They also played the audio from Hernandez’s interview last night and he said he was told before the game he will get the 9th as JJ is day-day. hopefully may be back for florida series.

Esmerling is the new 8th inning guy
Shaw’s one of a bevy of 7th-inning men we have. I think this move gets made regardless of Putz’s condition.

This was always the risk with Putz
He’s an injury prone guy. I hate “day to day”. I think teams should determine quickly if a DL stint is required and just do it, and give a guy treatment and rest. Not only does it give a much better chance to not have a lingering injury, but the break will allow a guy to have more in the tank down the stretch.
If they can’t survive in the pennant race without Putz for two weeks, then they are not nearly good enough anyway.
The worst major leaguer is better at baseball than I'll ever be at anything I ever do in my life.
Why doesn't the Majors do 7 day DLs?
All levels of the minor leagues do (afaik, and I could very well be wrong)
Per Mare, Per Terras
I think becuase most 15 day DL's
Are usually retroactive to a few day’s prior. Like if we did putz on the 15 Day right now, it would be retro to what, the 7th or the 8th?

Exactly
Unless we have a ‘pen crunch, we don’t really need to determine if Putz needs a DL stint right away, because we can make it retroactive.
