Juan Gutierrez to DL, Zach Kroenke Recalled from AAA Reno
After leaving the first game of yesterday's double header against the Colorado Rockies, the Arizona Diamondbacks have placed reliever Juan Gutierrez on the disabled list. He was seen pointing to his shoulder as he left the field, and the official diagnosis is indeed "right shoulder inflammation."
Gutierrez was struggling so far this year with the team - either being lights-out and allowing no runs to score, or throwing less than an inning and allowing multiple run to come across. In his past two outings, he allowed 4 earned runs in 1/3rd of an inning. He's also given up 3 home runs in 18.1 innings pitched.
His replacement is Zach Kroenke from AAA Reno. Kroenke was a September call-up last year and struggled mightily as a reliever, but had a solid start against the Dodgers. In 8 starts this year in Reno, he is 4-0 with a 5.64 ERA, 5 home runs, 14 walks and 22 strikeouts. No official word on him going to the bullpen, but with Guti out and Zach Duke coming up on Saturday, Kroenke will likely find himself in the bullpen as a long reliever.

I hope he starts tomorrow.
Keep Owings in the bullpen to pinch hit
Wait
You want the guy who’s put up a ERA over 5 in AAA to start? In Coors Field?
"Never ignore a coincidence. Unless you're busy, in which case always ignore a coincidence."
Over Owings
Yes. Triple A stats are misleading.
Owings
Had a pretty decent start against the Twins and has a much more appealing AAA/minor league line than Kroenke. Triple-A stats might be misleading, but Owings is definitely the safer bet.

Besides
If Reno = Launching Pad and Denver = More famous launching pad, could the stats be THAT misleading?
Bad doormat! No stock options!
Comparison
You’re comparing apples to apples anyway. Both have been working in AAA. Both guys lines are misleading from similar factors.

Just assigned to Low-A South Bend
On the 7-Day DL. He’ll take time, but his arm is electric (unless whatever injury that happened has taken away from that).

Coming off TJ
He ended there back in ‘09, IIRC. I guess they’re easing him back.

Not exactly who I was expecting.
But nice to see another lefty for the sake of flexibility.

I wasn't expecting this one
I was more expecting to have Zavada back in the majors, or maybe one of the starters come up and bump Owings into the bullpen.

Neither can I.
Really looking forward to the day he’s called up again.

Kroenke IS a starter
as noted in the story, saying “In 8 games as a starter…”
It’s just my guess that he’s going to the bullpen, I haven’t heard.

How is Zavada doing?
Is he making progress?

Not that I'd ever be happy about someone
going on the DL, but it’s going to be pretty nice not having to worry for a few weeks about Guti coming in to ruin every chance of winning we have. Just as long as it’s not serious…
Here is a post from Nick’s blog that I’d like you guy’s thoughts on:
Putz the other day said that he could pitch back to back to back days, but that he was not available for a game because he had fully warmed up to come into a game and then was not used a few times. This is almost the equivalent of pitching the game and it had an effect on Putz.
For useage itself, I haven’t seen an over use of pitchers, but we fans have no idea of who is being warmed up unless we are at the game in a seat that can the bull pen. (Our announcers are really bad about telling us things like this and what is happening on the field —-they are great at telling us the important stuff like what they did over the weekened and mindless banter, but that is another post).
Do you think there is any issue in “dry humping” the relievers? We have Guitierrez and Demel with arm trouble. We have Putz’ comments. Gibson is a new manager. Nagy a new MLB pitching coach (and useage in the minors is different). Thanks.
