Diamondbacks Farm Round-Up: May 16th
Only one win for the Diamondbacks affiliates, but South Bend were idle. An easy choice for Snakelet of the Day, even though our farm teams were outscored 13-17 overall.
Snakelet of the Day:
Wes Roemer (Double-A): 7.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Wes Roemer (Double-A): 7.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Triple-A: Reno 6, Iowa 9. Kevin Mulvey had a quality start after six innings, but his part in a six-run seventh inning for the Cubs ruined all that. He scattered seven hits and three walks across his 6.1 innings and ended up being charged with five runs, all earned. Jordan Norberto and Rafael Rodriguez were the other villains of that frame, though Kyler Newby posted a zero in the ninth. 2B Tony Abreu had three hits and drove in two runs, while there were multi-hit games for CF Collin Cowgill, SS Cody Ransom and 3B Sean Burroughs.
Double-A: Mobile 6, Carolina 1. If the team are looking for a Galarraga replacement - and they should be - maybe Wes Roemer might get a look. He allowed one run over 7 2/3 innings, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out four. His ERA on the season is now down to 2.39. However, he didn't get the W, as the BayBears offense only showed up in the bottom of the eighth, scoring five times. 3B Ryan Wheeler had two hits and drove in two, and C Ed Easley had three RBI, while CF A.J. Pollock also had a two-hit night. Your Daily Goldschmidt. Paul was held hitless in two at-bats, but did draw two walks and scored a run.
High-A: Visalia 1, Inland Empire 7. The Rawhide hitters struggled with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-7 on the night. CF Adam Eaton and 3B Raoul Torrez had two hits apiece, with the former driving in the only Visalia score of the game. 1B Matt Davidson reached safely three times, on a hit and two of the Rawhide's three free passes. Mike Belfiore had the worst possible start: the first five batters faced all reached and scored, as the 66ers went back-to-back-to-back on him. He struggled badly with his control, allowing six walks in addition to seven hits in 4.2 innings, giving up six runs.

something a little worrisome to keep a note about in the future (for me mostly)
today Borchering took a break, and yet Davidson was still kept at playing 1B
does this mean that the Dbacks are convinced enough that Davidson can’t play 3B? because if that’s true, his stock will hurt.
Reading too much into it, probably
Maybe he’s played 3B a lot lately and they have a balance of how many games at each slot they want him to see per week. Maybe because of how good Torrez was the day before, they wanted to find a spot for him somewhere in the line-up. Maybe Borchering was a late scratch and we don’t really have an appealing backup 1B option. Maybe Raoul Torrez is a better prospect than either Davidson or Borchering. (Last one was for lulz.)
Keith Law said in the off-season that the D-backs FO is convinced that Davidson can man 3B long-term. No reason to go 180-degrees on that because of one line-up quirk.

but it something that i will have to pay more attention to in the future (allocation of 3B time to Davidson i mean)

I agree
Despite IHSB’s well thought out reasons, if I were the FO and really thought Davidson was going to stick at 3rd, I would be playing him there every opportunity. Doesnt matter late scratch, lesser prospect doing well, whatever. He’s certainly not a slam dunk at the position, and needs all the repetitions he can get if we expect to use him there. Just seems irresponsible to me unless they come out with a realy good explanation. Otherwise the manager or someone should be questioned over this.

Interesting to see what happens in the minor-league rotations
Over the next few days. Will Roemer be tagged? Will we rest Owings and bring him up? Will we go for the cheap-skate option and tag someone on the 40-man (i.e. the terrible Mulvey)? Will we dare to start Galarraga again?

I'd Settle
For Edwin Jackson. At least he could get a ball on the ground
At least he has an official no-hitter.
I survived the 2004 & 2010 seasons.
Goldschmidt is AWESOME

For what it's worth...
The dbacks.com main page has the following headlines:
- Galarraga may be nearing end of his rope
…
- Prospect Roemer takes no-hitter into eighth
Would certainly be… interesting.
