Draft Day Baby: Fantasy League draft discussions

It seems all 3 of the SnakePit-related Fantasy Baseball leagues were held this evening. There are two leagues directly associated with us, Division 1 and Division 1A-Losers (TM Jim) teams. There's also a "keeper" league made up of some Snakepitters. So it was a long afternoon/evening of drafting for some people!

The first pick of the 2011 fantasy league went to Wimb and he picked....... Albert Pujols. How original. The first round was pretty much the highest ranked players until I went off the reservation and picked Buster Posey. More after the jump! What's your team like?

Star-divide

2011draft-rd1-chat_medium

As you can see (click to enlarge the screen shot), things pretty much went expected for the first round. Popular players were taken quickly and then the yelling started. Mainly by me. 'Skins was yelling at his auto-draft but did nothing to change it, and when he did, soco took his pick. soco took too long only once and is now stuck with A.J. Pierzynski. Plenty of current and former Diamondbacks made the cut - I took everyone's favorite twitter pal Barry Enright, Jim took JJ Putz, and somebody dared to take a chance on Brandon Webb (on the bench).

So, I was left to write this fanpost, but since I'm REALLY not good at fantasy analysis (and since the draft kicked me out), I'm mainly opening it as a starting point. What are the highs and lows of your draft results?

hoorah!

Lots of fun. The div 1 draft was brisk — thanks to folks for that. Especially for the size league it is. The keeper draft was long. Very long. But that wasn’t anyone’s fault. That’s just the nature of the beast that is auction. Both were great.

Best of luck in the coming season!

carlos gonzalez went really really high.....

is that normal? i don’t really do fantasy so…

Yes

Look at his numbers from 2010 – .336/.376/.598, 34 HR, 117 RBI, 111 R, 26 SB. He was one of the most valuable fantasy players last year. No park-adjustments in most fantasy leagues…

Most

of the draft rags had him going Top 5 it seemed. I wouldn’t have wanted him that high.

I do like him as a player. But given that I have two other, better catchers, I’m not sure I’ll need him this year.

Fairly happy with what I got

I like my pitching staff:

Clayton Kershaw (LAD – SP)
Tommy Hanson (Atl – SP)
Max Scherzer (Det – SP)
Jonathan Sánchez (SF – SP)
Jaime García (StL – SP)
Trevor Cahill (Oak – SP)
Francisco Cordero (Cin – RP)
Hong-Chih Kuo (LAD – RP)

with a bench of
Jair Jurrjens (Atl – SP)
David Hernández (Ari – SP,RP)

I’d take that rotation, and if Broxton or Putz don’t cut it, I have the heir-apparents.

Damn you

I have a lot of ALers on my team, the NL guys I wanted kept getting picked. I don’t know that I have a lot of power, though. :/ I’ve got 35 steals and a .297 average in Podsednik if anyone wants!

My rotation is bolstered by Verlander and Hamels. Aardsma and Wilson are my closers. As I said, I’ve got Enright, at this point I think he’s a lock for a spot on the team. :) Peavy’s on my bench for when he gets healthy.

Indeed....

The bidding went a bit OTT in the first round. I myself hadn’t been in an auction before and with so little advice for a 16 team league in terms of suggested values etc the impulse was there to not be left without an A+ hitter. As it turned out because 3/4 people weren’t there spending so big so early didn’t have as massive an impact as it normally would. That being said I’ve learned a lot for any future deep auction league.

happy enough

I was happy enough with the team. Even more than a snake, there are always picks you regret in an auction because of when a player comes out.
My regrets:
1) if I would’ve known how cheap beltre (27) and bautista (26) would go for, i would’ve waited for them as my 3b
2) didn’t mind spending elite money up front for elite guys (cabrera, holliday, wright), but should’ve gone for two instead of three and would have had a much stronger rotation (very good SPs were going for $18-25) — could’ve nabbed two more of those.
3) dollar picks — should’ve been more strategic with the ordering of my dollar picks, b/c i couldn’t overbid, guys like tabata, etc, were nabbed up with no other bids.
4) chris perez — should’ve paid a few extra bucks for an elite guy (rivera @ 15) instead of going with perez for nearly as much (12).
5) adam lind — like his prospects for a bounce back, but with the composition of my team just didn’t need him. could’ve spend the $15 better on a starter.

what i liked:
1) thrilled to be able to nab 4 possible closers in a very deep league (perez, hanrahan, aardsma, farnsworth). I assumed a guy like farnsworth would be my third.
2) happy with my power on offense. a little light on speed, but i should be able to tweak that with bench guys (crisp, gutierrez, etc).
3) cheap c, ss — after missing out on tulo and hanram, i was happy to avoid spending the $20 on a middling ss and go with a $1 version instead. Lowrie might not be great, but i’m sure to get production that won’t hurt me too much off the waiver wire. ditto for catcher.

Unsurprisingly, I’m a little happier with the snake than the auction. I think that’s normal. You’re a little more in control in the snake and the things that go wrong feel less like your fault (“why the heck did I spend X on him???” vs. “I can’t believe he snatched him that early?!”).

Things I was disapopinted with:
1) relievers - relievers flew off the board about an average of 5 rounds before their ADP and I didn’t adjust soon enough. I didn’t mind missing out on the studs, but not getting a Thornton/Perez/Hanrahan/etc to pair with Nathan was a disappointment.
2) Uggla
- it’s not that I didn’t like getting Uggla where I did, but if I would have known I could get the Figgins/Roberts combo as late as I did I wouldn’t passed on Uggla there.
3) Bautista— If I would have known Beltre would have been available in the 5th round, there’s no way I would have grabbed Bautista this early.

Things I’m happy with:
1) Cabrera — getting Cabrera at 9 was a steal. Thanks for your drunken, pathetic antics, Miggy.
2) power — in a year that power is down, I have a ton of thump.
3) SPs — waiting until the middle rounds for SPs proved to work really well in this draft. I don’t have any top end pitchers, but Greinke-Liriano-Marcum-Oswalt is as strong a 1-4 as I’ve ever had in a league this deep.

Really strong

You’re going to struggle with your pitching, but your offense is filthy. If I were you, I’d be trying to unload Fielder or one of Phillips/Pedroia for a real ace.

I let the computer autodraft

because I don’t have a lot of experience, and because it’s going to be objective about players. (I complained about getting Victorino, Marmol, and Volquez, and probably wouldn’t have drafted them, but that’s only for personal reasons) Also, if I had been drafting, I probably would have taken players with more positional versatility. Although having Fielder as a utility guy should certainly help my offensive counting stats.

Pitching-wise, I think I’ll be good for strikeouts and saves, but I dunno about wins, ERA or WHIP. I was thinking the same thing while watching my team appear re: pitching. Unfortunately, unlike real baseball, you can’t just outscore the opposition if your pitching sucks.

And yeah, thinking I’m gonna try trading for another starter.

Also,

I know a powerful 2B is a nice asset, but I’m not convinced Brandon Phillips should be drafted in the 4th round if you’ve already got Pedroia.

The problem with autodraft

it automatically takes the next highest ranked player (according to Yahoo! rankings, unless you changed them).

I should have a mfin theme song.

Which is always fun.

Three years ago I was in a league with the standard starting spots and three bench openings. Couldn’t make the draft, and somehow I ended up with four first baseman in the first five picks, filling up my bench with splendor.

In the keeper league

I almost certainly overpaid for some of my players. It’s easy to do in that auction format. And the Vatican Assassins stole David Aardsma and Kila Ka’aihue from me- well, technically only Aardsma, but I wanted Ka’aihue, how could you not want a player with a name like that?

My pitching doesn’t look too bad, if very starter-heavy- Lee, Oswalt, Hanson, Arroyo, with Porcello and Leake picked with the hope that they’ll progress in the next couple seasons. Offense is likely to be a struggle, though.

My roster:

C Victor Martinez 26
1B Ryan Howard 35
2B Howard Kendrick 12
3B Adrian Beltre 27
SS Erick Aybar 6
OF Chris Young 24
OF Ryan Raburn 2
OF Seth Smith 1
UTIL Kendry Morales 20
UTIL Jason Kubel 1
P Tommy Hanson 27
P Roy Oswalt 17
P Bronson Arroyo 1
P Rick Porcello 1
SP Cliff Lee 38
SP Brandon Webb 4
RP Joe Nathan 12
RP Fernando Rodney 1
BE Miguel Tejada 1
BE Mike Leake 1
BE Danny Espinosa 1
BE Pat Burrell 1
BE Edward Mujica 1

Yes, I drafted Webb. Mostly on purpose.

Morales and Beltre have the potential to be two of the biggest values of the draft.
You’re hurting in the OF and don’t have the reliever depth I like, but otherwise, it’s a really strong team.

Ineffective, most likely unnoticed vengeance!

Yeah, the outfield is definitely one of my weak spots.

I am trading

Upton- Soruia for Votto-Stanton. Doing this trade in large part because a typo by myself made the bid for Upton way to high and Niiko ended up with him. I have a couple of FA signings to fill up my empty slots. I also really need a 1B now, the league doesnt list Allen as a 1B for some reason and I was kind of counting on that…

Thoughts?

Agreed

I’m gutted that I couldn’t afford a few extra bucks for pitching, so many bargains to be had in the $10-20 range.

Time for another drink then?

Had I
