Diamondbacks pick Kennedy to start on opening day
Ian Kennedy has been picked to start on opening day for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said Tuesday that Kennedy will pitch April 1 at Colorado... Gibson also said Daniel Hudson, who is 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA in three appearances this spring, will be the Diamondbacks' No. 2 starter.

Little bit surprised...
Thought it might go to Hudson, or the ‘experienced’ option of Saunders.
Still not a bad pick but I wonder if it’s anything to do with his contract being renewed… bit of a sweetener?
Time for another drink then?

The same thing
Crossed my mind. It’s not like they anything to lose by giving him the spot anyway. Maybe the conversation with Gibby went like this…
ahem
“Kid, I know you didn’t get the contract you wanted but you’re still a doggone good pitcher. Tell you what, how’s about you start on April 1st? Yeah, kid. I want you to start in Colorado for the opener.”

If so
That’s a savvy move.
Kirk Gibson. Savvy.

Great choice.
Has more experience than the most talented pitcher, Hudson, and has more talent than the most experienced pitcher, Saunders.

now...
naming Hudson #2…..
i think that takes some balls. and also sort of says a little about the probability of Saunders being traded by the deadline

Or
Of Saunders not being ready for the start of the season.

That's my thought.
Give IPK a leg up, since he’s the only current rotation member who was a rotation member on Opening Day 2010, also.
