Diamondbacks Sign LHP Alexander Carreras

I was reading on MLBTradeRumors.com and saw that the team just signed 22 year old Cuban Left-Hander Alexander Cerreras to a contract worth $400k. Scouts claim he can reach 93 MPH on the radar gun occasionally, but on average his fastball sits at 86-89 MPH. Aside from the fast ball Carreras also mixes in a cutter, and change up. This seems to be a nice low cost, low risk move for a young lefty to add to our farm system.

Could be both.

He pitched in the Dominican League last winter, where in four starts and a 4.20 ERA with 12 strikeouts and 10 walks in 15 innings.

Given his age and scouting report, it seems like this guy might be maxed out physically without room for much more upside. But a team can never have too many young lefties on its roster.

Also, the 86-89 is just what he sat at on some occasions in front of scouts. I’d imagine Arizona expects he has a bit more velo for a 22-year-old signed for $400,000 with what seems to be some command/control kinks to work out.

That said, if he’s a low-90’s guy on a consistent occasion, it’s a great move. Even if he ends up a lefty bullpen piece, arm strength lefties aren’t easy to find, and it’s talent that we’re getting before the ridiculous restrictions of the new CBA set in, particularly in Latin America. Have to like us getting some Latin American spending in while we still don’t have heavy restrictions on what we can spend.
