Jason Marquis Signs One-Year Deal With the Twins
Marquis has signed a one-year deal with the Twins for 3 million. Hope he has some better luck there than he did with us

It was
I don’t know if he could have been good for us, but to see someone have as much bad luck as he did is never fun

Have to say
This is a great contract for Minnesota. Wouldn’t have minded it for Arizona, but I can see why we stayed away. Not a guaranteed upgrade on the farm (nothing available for $3MM would be, really), and would rather get a cheaper fringey option that doesn’t drain resources or a clear-cut upgrade like Kuroda. Still, you can get a lot worse for $3MM than Jason Marquis.

He had bad luck
but the D’Backs are flushed with pitching talent, and he would have quickly become expensive deadwood.

As would have Joe Saunders
Yet we offered him 2/12. I’d give Marquis 1/3 before giving Saunders 2/12.

But if offered arbitration, the worst case for Saunders would have been
be one year with the possibility of getting something for him before arbitration or during the season. Money spent on Marquis would probably be a complete waste for this team.

So Saunders at 1/8.5 was going to have trade value
And Marquis – a solid #4 starter capable of chewing innings – on 1/3 would have no trade value?
Not following your logic.

Possible, and probable,
just my opinion based on age and injury history.

Saunders has a proven track record in a D'Back uniform
which alone makes him more valuable than Marquis. I’m going to keep pounding this, until the rooks prove themselves, they are nothing more than the metaphorical two in a bush.

that all depends
on whether you think past performance in the major leagues is a good indicator of future success
many times, it isn’t

Well
I think it would be safe to say that Saunders has a better chance of repeating his 2011 performance than Marquis does, except for his time in the desert.

We're using different metrics, laddie
There’s more to playing winning baseball than individual performance, and while Saunders didn’t have a winning record, he made some genuine contributions that are hard to fit into an SPSS spreadsheet…

And while on the topic, Past behavior
is usually the best indicator of future behavior. I don’t think that’s too controversial.

And isn't that the reason that
statistics are useful?

I make my living using statistics on a daily basis
obviously, I respect them to the extent that the have utility. The problem in baseball though is that there are vital emergent properties that don’t readily, or even with shoe-horns, operationalize well in statistical analysis. Club chemistry, is one thing. Ridiculous body-risky plays at home that change a ballclub’s level of motivation are another. Saunders is by no means the most talented pitcher even on the Diamondbacks, but as the old saying goes, evidently he’s a team player.

That he is, but alas no longer the proverbial
bird in the hand.

That is true
but we can console ourselves with the knowledge though that the two waiting in the bush are probably not flightless dodos.

We
actually have more like six in the bush, and the laws of probability tell me at least one of them will be more than a flightless dodo.
Also, I think we have a new phrase for a failed pitching prospect

Well
if Peter Jackson’s going to direct it, I have a couple other movies I want him to make first, so it’ll have to wait

I want him
to remake the Eragon movie, and then make the others in the series, except do it right this time and actually use the same story as the book did

A budget of $100,000,000
for a directorial debut? Yikes. Someone must have had some incriminating snapshots…

Yeah
that’s about the only way he gets the job, not to mention the money. The movie was terrible, especially when compared to the book. Even when you take into account that the story is basically just rehashing Star Wars with a couple twists the book destroys the movie

Star Wars was a great story. Either enjoy it again from a different angle, or be quiet and let the rest of us enjoy it

Marquis has a pretty solid track record too.
May not be in a D-back uniform, but I don’t see how that matters much. All things equal, I’d probably take Joe because of health/innings certainty, but for a $5.5MM difference in salary and a year shorter commitment, I’d take Marquis any day of the week.

How one performs for one team
and not for another can matter a lot. There are a lot of factors involved in success and failure, including (gasp) luck.
