Casey Blake signed by Colorado
Casey Blake was just signed by the Rockies to a 1 year $1m deal
This is an example of why I was so disappointed in the Kubel, Bloomquist, and McDonald signings. Roberts is a strong candidate to regress. Aaron Hill has a significant risk that he will suck. Blake is old now, 38, and his bat was pretty poor last year, but his 3b defense is still rated at a or above average making him a perfectly good 3b, far better then all our non-Roberts options last year. He would have been an excellent and cheap insurance policy if Roberts regresses at 3b, and allows you to shift Roberts to 2b if Hill stinks next year.
There are cheap veterans out there who are much better fits for this teams needs than investing in tired old retreads and retraining a DH. I don't think Damon has signed yet, and he's coming off a $5M 1 year contract and is still a better defender, hitter and base runner than Kubel, for one example. For all of Tower's excellence in acquiring good bullpen pitchers, he seems to have tremendous problems correctly valuing position players.

Good post
Blake for a 1 yr/1 Mil, Damon for 1 yr/5 mil, definitely better than Kubel for 2/15 and Bloomquist for 2/3.8
Like you said, as good as KT is on the pen, he’s at least that weak on valuing position players.
The worst major leaguer is better at baseball than I'll ever be at anything I ever do in my life.
Granted
That duo gives you no shortstop coverage. If the club thinks Drew isn’t going to be healthy to start the year – which is a fairly reasonable deduction with their desire for a left-handed power hitter – then Bloomquist has some value that the other two listed here don’t.
I’d be fine with John McDonald for a couple of weeks, but if it’s a month or longer we’ll be without Stephen, I’m glad we got Bloomquist back (albeit not for two years).

Reed Johnson just re-signed with the Cubs for rumored $1M range
He’s been a plus defensive left fielder his entire career and is right handed.

Kubel
must have had some sort of Blackmail on KT to get 15 million for two years out of us

Another of KT's Pension Deals?
Except a bit on the early side?

I wonder
if it means KT is going to start lobbying for the DH in the NL?
Is it mid-February yet?

Or maybe
he knows something we don’t and the NL is already getting the DH

Great writeup Dan
Also the Nats got hosed but i understand their short term expectations. Zimmerman is probably gone in 2 years.
old guys
what is your fascination with old players? casey blake? johnny damon? I don’t see how casey blake as an insurance policy would have helped this club. we already have guys that provide flexibility and insurance. all your doing is taking up a roster spot.
Blake is coming off neck surgery
and was on the DL three times last season.
Neither is it a million dollar contract. It’s two million when he makes the roster, and an additional mil in performance bonuses.
Finally, Casey’s most statistically similar bref comp, through age 37, happens to be this guy.
Reporters asked the Phillies' skipper how a pitcher had managed to injure himself in his sleep. "I don’t know," Manuel said. "I didn’t sleep with him."
I have a feeling
That Blake will end up injured and they’ll resort to having Jordan Pacheco at 3B all season…Pacheco is GOOD and HEALTHY
I miss you Bazooka Joe!!!
