The hypothetical game
With the winter meetings come up, let us all say we're in KT's shoes, who do you pursue and why? Who do you look for in trades, and who are you open to trading? Do you ship off Stephen Drew, or have an opening day lineup card composed only by "shortstops" (Rudy, and Nick Punto still available, super scrappy!)? Just curious as to who the Pitters would like to see in Sedona Red this upcoming year.

i might go after another reliever
as insurance in case Putz’s injuries start creeping up
Anybody in particular?
I remember Juan Cruz with rose-tinted glasses, and he’s a FA, i’m not sure if I’d pursue any of the FA lefties to compliment Paterson.
ugh
i don’t even know. i’m not a fan of old relievers, but that’s pretty much all there is on the market this year.
Dan Wheeler or Frank Francisco?
basically, just avoid guys who are going to want closer price tags. Francisco would be nice. i’d like to think we could get him on a two-year $4 million a year type deal.

If I remember correctly
Wheeler was way beyond serviceable with Tampa, and even Houston, I’d be more than ok with KT taking a flier on him.
Kuroda is a best-case scenario for the rotation
With his desire for a one-year commitment and lack of significant injury history. Another reliever would be appreciated, as would a bench bat.
It’s a shame that Eric Hinske has already been snatched up – he’d be a great 3B/COF/1B backup LHH power bat to have.
Would love to get Takashi Saito. Two specialists (Ziegler, Paterson) is already a bit much, would rather not go get another LOOGY and make it three. That’s just begging to over-expose Paterson and Ziegler. Saito’s damn good against pretty much anybody, and if he gets dinged up mid-season again, we can always call on Evan Marshall.

I've always wondered
If KT would look for a legitimate power bat off the bench. I saw that Giambi had already been re-signed, and Hinske as well. Is there anyone out there worth pursuing that would opposing managers would have to prepared for in late game situations?
I think Kuroda would be a dream option as well, just to give the kids a little more seasoning, the timing would be perfect, but I don’t think he wants to leave L.A., correct?
With Saito, does that mean Cook starts the year in AAA? How is the bullpen projecting to play out as of right now, Putz, Hernandez, Shaw, Ziegler, Paterson……FA/Demel/Cook???
i doubt the bench
our bench is basically complete
Bloom, Mac, Blum, Blanco, Cowgill
who would get the shaft out of those guys? Blum or Cowgill? you need the defensive 4th OF imo, so you have to keep Cowgill (no way Bloom could play CF). and last i heard, we are still intent on keeping Blum.

we should have just kept Miranda
on the bench

Though he'll get another shot in ST.

I was wondering if we'd do that
When we first signed Willie last year. His versatility lends itself to having a bat-only NL bench slugger. I thought it would be Wily Mo Pena (and honestly wouldn’t mind if it was once again), but that didn’t last long.
Who knows if Kuroda wants to leave. Can’t hurt to try.
Probably start Cook at Reno. He’s far from a finished product.

Still thinking we need a backup 1B
Because Geoff Blum doesn’t cut it for me. But we appear not to have the roster room at this point, unless we go without a true fourth outfielder.
"We have to resist it. Do whatever you have to. Cross your fingers. Say a prayer. Think of a basket of kittens. But do not give in to the fear..."
Miranda probably will get an attempt to make the club.

My problem with Juan
is that sometimes he made my head hurt. The dude could not pass the eye test IMO, he made some plays that left me scratching my head, especially on the base paths.
Agreed on the sentiment
That he made head-scratching plays. Also had a couple in the field.

Apparently
I don’t know who they’re planning on using as a fourth outfielder if they do. Heaven forbid it’s Bloomquist.

So how abbout Burhle?..
I know we’ve been talking about Kuroda, but Burhle is iinteresting as well. He’s been consistent for a couple years now, doesn’t always try to throw the ball as hard as he can. Im sure with the defense our infield has he’d be terrific here.. plus he’d be insurance incase any of our top pitching prospects fail or need more seasoning…
Believe it or not.. I PISS SEDONA RED!

He'd be really good here
But does it make sense to give him three years? Because that’s exactly what he’ll want.

True...
But I heard hi agent at the GM meetings say he’d be open to two years and a option, but knowing Miami and Chicago would give him three guaranteed years it would be tough to land him here.. you never know what KT will do though ..

We need to sign one of Kuroda or Buehrle or Oswalt.
If Buehrle or Oswalt want more than two years,FORGET ABOUT IT! If that happens then they might have to trade for a pitcher or go to Japan and beg Kuroda to sign.
I do expect Saunders to be traded within the next two months without question. No way are they paying JOE SAUNDERS! 8 million flippin dollars!
we won't run the risk of trading him imo
if we manage to get one of those three
we will just non-tender
by blue bulldog on Nov 16, 2011 3:31 PM EST up reply actions
I think they'll sign somebody within the next month.
It’s more likely to be somebody like Jon Garland or Jason Marquis then the guys I mentioned above.
I do believe there will be a market for Saunders. I think it will only be big market teams, but still there will be a market. I think he’d be good in Detroit.
I think
that KT should try and trade for Derek Jeter. We don’t have enough middle infielders, and I think if we offered them a package of Skaggs, Miley, Corbin, Bauer, IPK, and Upton, we could get him.
Oh where oh where have my Dbacks gone? Oh where oh where could they be!
by imstillhungry95 on Nov 16, 2011 10:38 PM EST reply actions
But seriously
The absolute last thing we need is to get another middle infielder. At this point though, I don’t see much we could do aside from trading Drew which I don’t think is a good idea. I would be less against the idea if we did it towards the trading deadline, when hopefully he’s been playing some good short for the first half, but right now, I don’t think we could get much in return.
We’re running out of roster space, and we still need someone who can play 1B behind Goldschmidt, a fourth outfielder, and maybe a some bullpen help in case Putz gets injured. Lot of holes, but not enough spots for them. Part of me almost hopes that KT goes out there and gets these pieces, and then, maybe, we just eat a couple of those contracts on middle infielders and make a couple of them start the season in Reno. I don’t know. I think KT made some mistakes with the bench, but we shall just have to wait and see how it goes

It seems a bit odd that KT has not mentioned that as a priority recently.
I guess they could just use Miranda. He can’t start at 1B, so maybe he is better suited for the bench.
And besides Overbay there’s pretty much no one that would fit as a lefty 1B that playd once a week.
