Gameday Thread, NLDS #5 OVERFLOW: 10/7 vs Brewers

It's already the 4th inning and we're over 900 comments in the initial GDT. Many of those comments came after Justin Upton lined a solo home run to right, to put the Diamondbacks up 1-0 for the lead. Ian Kennedy is pitching very well, having allowed just one hit in the first three innings.

Goldschmidt happens.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 7, 2011 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

fine

somewhat of a strawman on my part

but i stand by what i said. he should not have gotten to 3-1. should have just thrown a fastball on the 2-1 pitch. heck, should have just barreled it down the zone on the 1-0 pitch. bases-loaded….people swing out of the zone very rarely (Hairston swings out of the zone 30% of the time)….there’s no point in giving the hitter such a huge advantage by putting yourself behind.

by blue bulldog on Oct 7, 2011 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

He should

not have thrown 6 feet off the plate on 2-1, but throwing right down the gut with the bases loaded? That’s just asking for trouble, period.

Goldschmidt happens.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 7, 2011 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

disagree

he should have tried to throw the pitch that he tried (and ended up throwing) on the 3-1 count on the 2-1 count. a lot less dangerous than throwing a changeup that is meant to be out of the zone on the 2-1 count.

by blue bulldog on Oct 7, 2011 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying

he should throw way off the plate, I’m saying the idea that you should throw a fastball right down the middle with 1 out and the bases loaded is just dumb.

Goldschmidt happens.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 7, 2011 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

okay fine

obviously i don’t mean “throw down the middle” literally

the point is, why would you choose to throw a changeup that is meant to be out of the zone on a 2-1 count, with the bases loaded, when the mass majority of the time hitters dont’ swing on pitches out of the zone?

essentially, it’s weakly dominating to throw the pitch he intended to throw on a 3-1 count, when the count is 2-1, because the hitter isn’t 100% sure that pitch is coming.

by blue bulldog on Oct 7, 2011 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Because

if the hitter DOES swing, you’ve probably gotten yourself out of the inning, just like that.

Goldschmidt happens.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 7, 2011 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

which like i said....

doesn’t happen that often

and is going to happen waaaaaaay less than the 30% i said above, when you’re so concerned about not hanging the changeup that you’re going to subconsciously give yourself more cushion outside

by blue bulldog on Oct 7, 2011 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Well,

then maybe that’s just as much the problem. Throw something they can’t hit and don’t make it obvious. But just because his execution wasn’t great doesn’t mean anything for the process.

Goldschmidt happens.

Facing bases loaded and only one down

I guess my mind’s thinking that it’s a swing away from 4-1 Milwaukee, so fast-forwarding and seeing it’s 1-1 is far more acceptable than a (very plausible) 4-1 situation.

Ok, so Hairston was batting, maybe not 4-1, but same point.

Not much of a stretch in my mind. Yadier Molina is barely behind McCann in the batting stats hitting .305/.349/.465 with 14 homers.

Ruiz, on the other hand, is definitely worse defensively, and is batting .283/.371/.389 with 6 homers.

Better hitter (this year) and better fielder.

St. Penelope: the original patron saint of the SnakePit, Penelope Cruz’s image has protected us through thick and thin. Only invoke her name under the most distressing situations.

Guys, you know why we're losing?

The last two games we won, I officially called the win in the gamethread. The two games we lost? I didn’t. Notice something?

So, to save the day, I’m calling a win for us. Let’s do this.

Joe Saunders: "They played a really good game, so hats off to us"

Good on ya, Bryan

In a dispassionate view, the ardor for reform, improvement for virtue, knowledge, and even beauty, is only a vain sticking-up for appearances, as if one were anxious about the cut of one's clothes, in a community of blind men.
