Gameday Thread, NLDS #5 OVERFLOW: 10/7 vs Brewers
It's already the 4th inning and we're over 900 comments in the initial GDT. Many of those comments came after Justin Upton lined a solo home run to right, to put the Diamondbacks up 1-0 for the lead. Ian Kennedy is pitching very well, having allowed just one hit in the first three innings.

I'll take a tired Greinke

My value over a replacement poster is approximately 10.5 runs.
A lot of short-rest starts
He had back-to-back starts with only 3 days rest. He would be coming into this game after only 4 days rest (if my math and memory are correct). Lots more work than he’s used to over that period of time. I’d definitely take a tired Greinke.

why the hell are we not throwing down the middle?
jesus christ….
don’t dig yourself a whole in this situation
don't get caught up in small sample sizes...
Hairston is still Hairston
he still sucks. i’d rather have had him in this situation than Braun
I'd
rather have him in this situation than Braun, too. That’s a stupid argument.
But he’s been good., and they’re playing at home. Hot streaks aren’t ALL luck.
Goldschmidt happens.
fine
somewhat of a strawman on my part
but i stand by what i said. he should not have gotten to 3-1. should have just thrown a fastball on the 2-1 pitch. heck, should have just barreled it down the zone on the 1-0 pitch. bases-loaded….people swing out of the zone very rarely (Hairston swings out of the zone 30% of the time)….there’s no point in giving the hitter such a huge advantage by putting yourself behind.
He should
not have thrown 6 feet off the plate on 2-1, but throwing right down the gut with the bases loaded? That’s just asking for trouble, period.
Goldschmidt happens.
disagree
he should have tried to throw the pitch that he tried (and ended up throwing) on the 3-1 count on the 2-1 count. a lot less dangerous than throwing a changeup that is meant to be out of the zone on the 2-1 count.
I'm not saying
he should throw way off the plate, I’m saying the idea that you should throw a fastball right down the middle with 1 out and the bases loaded is just dumb.
Goldschmidt happens.
okay fine
obviously i don’t mean “throw down the middle” literally
the point is, why would you choose to throw a changeup that is meant to be out of the zone on a 2-1 count, with the bases loaded, when the mass majority of the time hitters dont’ swing on pitches out of the zone?
essentially, it’s weakly dominating to throw the pitch he intended to throw on a 3-1 count, when the count is 2-1, because the hitter isn’t 100% sure that pitch is coming.
Because
if the hitter DOES swing, you’ve probably gotten yourself out of the inning, just like that.
Goldschmidt happens.
which like i said....
doesn’t happen that often
and is going to happen waaaaaaay less than the 30% i said above, when you’re so concerned about not hanging the changeup that you’re going to subconsciously give yourself more cushion outside
Well,
then maybe that’s just as much the problem. Throw something they can’t hit and don’t make it obvious. But just because his execution wasn’t great doesn’t mean anything for the process.
Goldschmidt happens.
I blame Ish95

Facing bases loaded and only one down
I guess my mind’s thinking that it’s a swing away from 4-1 Milwaukee, so fast-forwarding and seeing it’s 1-1 is far more acceptable than a (very plausible) 4-1 situation.
Ok, so Hairston was batting, maybe not 4-1, but same point.

Cards offense waaaay better than Phillies
it would be rather reminiscent of this series actually (Dbacks v. Brewers i mean)
the three of us have fairly similar teams
Really?
Not much of a stretch in my mind. Yadier Molina is barely behind McCann in the batting stats hitting .305/.349/.465 with 14 homers.
Ruiz, on the other hand, is definitely worse defensively, and is batting .283/.371/.389 with 6 homers.
Better hitter (this year) and better fielder.

a better year, but Ruiz was injured. Ruiz has been better over his career (and a LOT better last year).
I think it’s more of a tossup. If Molina is better, which he probably is, it’s not by a lot.
Goldschmidt happens.
Ok..
Ruiz has 472 plate appearances, Molina with 518.
I don’t know, I wouldn’t use an injury excuse on this one. I’ll concede that it probably doesn’t matter however.
