Gameday Thread, NLDS #4: 10/5 vs. Brewers OVERFLOW
Bit of s slugfest thus far. However, the net result is, Arizona are up by four at the end of the fourth. That'll do. Both starting pitchers are out of the game, so we'll see how long relief holds up.

Odd.
Wouldn’t expect BA to love Goldy that much.
I did see that Jim Callis ranked our pitching in 3 yrs above Tampa Bay’s, though.
Kinda wanna tweet Keith Law one of these days and ask if his opinion of Goldy has changed. Or whether that of any scouts had changed.
Goldschmidt happens.
oh yeah
BA loves our pitching right now…
in the SL League, they ranked Skaggs 2nd (behind Matt Moore of course) and Parker 5th (behind Goldy and Brett Jackson)
Badler also said if Bauer had qualified, he would have been 2nd ahead of Skaggs.
that put all three of our pitchers ahead of Vizcaino and Delgado (the Braves duo)

i would give Micah one more inning
since he doesn’t have to go through the top of the order (unless really bad shit goes down)
i’d then let Parker get an inning or two. with a really short leash. if he starts walking people, or showing symptoms of control problems, i’d yank him out.
would like it if we didn’t have to throw Hernandez today. don’t want the Brewers seeing him too many times. would really prefer not throwing Putz either, though i’m not gonna complain if we throw Putz in the 9th.

dunno
still think that if you use him as a reliever, would have made infinite more sense to pitch him yesterday and let him get a feel for it
dude has never pitched in relief before. this is basically the first time in ever.
by blue bulldog on Oct 5, 2011 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Really?
When he enters a game, the Win prob would be at 50%, and I’m assuming it’s quite a bit higher now. So wouldn’t this be lower leverage?
What's one more comeback, anyway?
by Zavada's Moustache on Oct 5, 2011 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions
it's not the mathematical win probability
i guess i’m thinking of more a psychological imprint
again also, i think you have to factor in that Parker has never pitched relief before, in like his entire life.
by blue bulldog on Oct 5, 2011 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions
i mean....ideally
in that last situation, you would have kept Micah Owings in for one more inning, to face the bottom of the order. take him out before he faces the top.
then you let Parker face the top. that way if the top of the order reaches base, then you only have to worry about crappy players like Betancourt bringing them in, instead of say, Betancourt on base, worrying about Hart bringing him in. unless you’re afraid that the guys at the top hit the ball hard for doubles and home runs, but with Parker’s stuff, you’re less worried about that, and more worried about walks allowing people on base, and singles.
by blue bulldog on Oct 5, 2011 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Fair point.
I would have liked to see Owings stay in. But I guess Gibby wanted to give Parker a chance to face less-threatening hitters?
Or, maybe he just reached into a hat and pulled Parker’s name out. Who knows?
What's one more comeback, anyway?
by Zavada's Moustache on Oct 5, 2011 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah i think so too
that Gibby wanted him to face less-threatening hitters
but i think he doesn’t understand that if Parker’s off, then even bad hitters will reach base against him (via walk) and if he’s on, it doesn’t matter if he’s facing good or bad hitters

He talked about the home run off Lincecum nearly hitting the glove at AT&T park. And he talked about the amazing right-center field HR he hit, as being one of only two hit by right-handed hitters there all season. But, I definitely remember him talking about how the DBacks brought him up and “that guy pretty much ended our season.”

Well,
Dan & blue bulldog, perhaps.
I thought Collmenter would be our legit rookie RP this year.
Goldschmidt happens.
For having such a "mediocre" farm system last year
We have four rookies that have contributed to this club in a big way the last two days: Collmenter, Goldschmidt, Shaw, and Cowgill.
Sweet.

We've had
almost everything go right this year for our farm system.
Well…except for Brewer, Anderson, Krauss, and Borchering, I guess.
Actually, take Brewer back, despite the injury.
Goldschmidt happens.
yeah
every farm has its ups and downs
we got lucky in the sense that none of our elite prospects had major setbacks (Parker, Skaggs, i’d even lump Davidson in here)
and while half of our borderline Top 150 guys last year had setbacks (those names above) the other half took major steps forward

i think expecting Hernandez to struggle is expected.
you can’t expect a reliever, no matter how good you are, to be able to go up against the same team three games in a row and expect sterling results. major league hitters are too good for that…
i’m really worried about Friday. i don’t think we should use Hernandez, because Gibby has wasted him these last couple of games. if Hernandez pitches in a close game on Friday, the chance of him blowing the save/hold would be much higher than normal…

Here is a non game question, but still DBacks related
Does your team store sell t-shirts that have the DBacks logo on front and then the player name and number on the back?
Actually, I am really sure
Because when I was there a week ago, my friend was looking at T-shirts with Parra’s name on the back
Very cool
I will have to get my old grade school friend who lives down there to pick me up a Hudson shirt then. Add it to my collection.
Yep!
There are a few tshirts, not just jerseys.

I’d prefer the OOGY’s after Putz got work yesterday. Reminds me of Roenicke’s aggressive use of Axford in Milwaukee… didn’t make a ton of sense to me.

about the bats getting used to the pitcher….
we know tomorrow is almost certainly not going to be a shootout
it could come down to runs in the 8th or 9th…..do you feel comfortable with Putz and Hernandez knowing that tomorrow would be the 3rd and 4th time Milwaukee gets a chance to see them?

Putz probably won’t face the same hitters, in all likelihood. Not too worried about that. Definitely wouldn’t have used Hernandez, though.

wow
that first pitch to Fielder was in a dangerous area…
Kinda tired of the booing Prince Fielder
Mostly because you pretty much know it’s sheep mentality, a few people start doing it and then people of lesser knowledge start doing it because they think it’s what they’re supposed to do.
If you’re gonna boo Fielder, boo everyone else too. Or don’t boo.

i had season tickets during two of the dark years of this team. Trust me, the fans making ANY noise is good. Way better than just being quiet. I know it means something to the players.
I didn't say they should be quiet.
Cheer your team. Or boo everyone on the other team. Don’t boo one guy because of a home run derby. It’s fine in the moment, like at the actual HR derby it’s fine, but this is 3 months later. I’d barely even remember that if it weren’t for the fans booing Fielder about it.

Because I don't think they do.
If it’s just because they don’t like him from being on the opposite team, then boo all Brewers.
I honestly think it’s “fake hustle” booing, from the homerun derby affair. It annoys me. Fake hustle, in that they think they have to make it look like they care about the stupid HR Derby crap to look like good fans.
In a dispassionate view, the ardor for reform, improvement for virtue, knowledge, and even beauty, is only a vain sticking-up for appearances, as if one were anxious about the cut of one's clothes, in a community of blind men.

I don't think it OBVIOUSLY does.
It’s possible, but even if it does, they seriously have their priorities out of wack. It’s not like Prince Fielder voted to have Justin Upton kicked out of the league. It’s only a home run derby. If anything, blame MLB for changing the rules about selections.

This
so this. At this point, I barely remember the all star game, much less the HR derby, and I would boo fielder just because of all the people that are getting bent out of shape about it
After 94 wins, and a trip to the NLDS, #InGibbyWeTrust!
by imstillhungry95 on Oct 6, 2011 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions
I wouldn't.
I can’t see doing something just to piss someone else off. It’s so “I’m going to piss my mom off because I’m going to piss my mom off.” It just seems…I don’t know…juvenile? Yeah, juvenile would be the word. If I do something, it’s because it means something to me. I couldn’t care less whether other people like it or don’t like it. I certainly can’t find the time to do something explicitly to piss someone off.
As for booing Fielder, I do think the HR Derby thing was his choice. MLB didn’t force him to choose Ricky Weeks. So, if it pissed me off, he would be the appropriate person to boo. It just isn’t something I care enough about now to do so. I also kind of agree that doing it just because other people do it is sheep mentality and means little—and it is the same as doing the wave. At least people do that because they’re having fun doing so. They enjoy the feeling of doing this thing together, whatever “this thing is.” I don’t think people are booing Fielder “ironically.” I also don’t think it necessarily shows support for Justin. Cheering for Justin shows support for Justin.
It appears that simply having an opinion that differs from the prevailing view kind of touches some nerves, huh?
by azshadowwalker on Oct 6, 2011 3:30 AM EDT up reply actions
I booed ironically

But there’s some fun for the ordinary fan in booing someone together, too — maybe even moreso than the stupid wave.
