Source: #Dbacks sign Stephen Drew to two-year, $13.75M deal. Includes mutual option for 2013
Jon Morosi, via Twitter [hat-tip to kishi]. That buys out his remaining arbitration years; he can still become a free agent after 2012, if he wants, since it's a mutual option.

Wow. Heilman is a real surprise.

surprising, yes
but I am actually excited to see him get a chance to start. He’ll probably suck, but who doesn’t want to see a guy succeed at what he most wants to do?

I am so happy
That Heilman will be back…and given the chance to start!

Especially
after all the talk about him being excited to be a FA.
Guess the fish just weren’t biting?

I wonder
If Heilman throws enough innings and is mildly competent, like we all hope he is, could he jump up to Type A? IP’s are a big factor on that designation.

Eh...
Doug Davis went 28-34 for us, with a 4.22 ERA in 542 innings, an average of 9-11 in 180.2 IP per season — and was a Type B free agent.
Heilman, over the last two years, has combined to go 9-12, with a 4.31 ERA, in a total of 144.1IP and 7 saves — not particularly good reliever numbers.
To be a Type-A FA, he’d have to have a Randy Johnson circa 2001-2002 or Pedro Martinez circa 1999-2000 type season.

I really like the heilman signing
There are enough questions with the back of our rotation that for $2MM he’s worth the risk, who knows, he was a good starter in college it could work out for everyone.
+1
