Diamondbacks get Matt Gorgen as PTBNL in Qualls trade
It was announced today that the Diamondbacks will receive reliever Matt Gorgen from the Rays as the PTBNL for sending them Chad Qualls. Gorgen played for the AA Montgomery Biscuits this season, was tied for the Southern League in saves at 22 and put up 1.65 ERA, allowing 21 walks while striking out 47. He did miss about a month of the season with tendinitis, starting in July. The Montgomery Advertiser picked Gorgen as their team MVP. Before the season started, Minor League Ball had him as the #20 prospect in the Rays organization. Rays Prospects had him at #14, and they discuss his drop in command towards the end of last season.
Since being traded to the Rays, Chad Qualls has appeared in 16 games and allowed 9 earned runs for an ERA of 6.57.

Wait. What?
We traded Qualls? When did that happen??

Just as soon

wait.
why did they give us an even better player for qualls?

Hold up.
We got more than a bag of balls? Kick @#$%!
I'm feeling fiery, fiery, I tells ya! Who cares if I lose 10 in a row?
I know!
I still can’t believe that we got a warm, breathing baseball player for Chad Qualls!
Mr. Science Boy
I actually would have settled for the low end
of the baseball scale. They could have been BP used baseballs.

I'm just surprised
That it’s an arm above A-ball. But I figured we’d get a live relief arm.

those peripherals
are pretty decent. i’m definitely surprised we were able to get someone like him for qualls….though of course there’s no guarantee that gorgen will pan out in the majors
still, was definitely expecting much worse
I can't believe
we got a living, breathing, human being for Qualls.

You were
But once we figured out we could swing a deal for Yu Darvish, we set up a deal to send the Little League team a terrier puppy- Welsh terrier, if I remember right- so we could get you back, and then send you to join the Nippon Ham Fighters.
With a move like that, I think BattleMoses just earned himself an interview with the Diamondbacks for Jerry DiPoto’s job.

The real winner is Chad
who will end up with a ring this year. Talk about worst to first.
As for Gorgen, steal.
Let's not get too excited here
Just taking a quick peek at minorleaguesplits.com, Gorgen’s going to be a middle reliever at best if his ground-ball rate this year is any indication – 31.3%. EWWWW. 47.3% FB%?!?! Chase Field is going to destroy him.
He only survived because he had a 3.2% HR/FB rate and that is not something that is going to continue in the major leagues. The over-8 K/9 rate is nice, but the nearly-4 BB/9 rate won’t be passable once that HR/FB regresses.
The real value of this deal, as we all knew all along, was shedding Qualls’ salary. Though I guess we also now have a former Montgomery Biscuit in the system. So there’s another awesome plus.
I find it hilarious that he was “promoted” to Triple-A, despite the Aces’ season being over and the BayBears still having playoff games… perhaps they have qualifications for postseason rosters in the minors too?

i'm seriously
beginning to consider that flyball pitchers are going to be more successful in chase (in these next couple of years at least) rather than groundball pitchers because
1) our outfield defense as a whole is a lot stronger than our infield defense
2) chase field has become less and less home run friendly in recent years. in 2006 we lead MLB in HR park factor, but the past two years our HR park factor was at 104 (barely above the median)
3) our problem seems to be that we give up a significant number of doubles and triples. our walls aren’t very high, so it’s not likely that these extra base hits come from deep fly balls that hit the wall (only place where this is possible is deep center), which means that our defense can get to most “fly balls” and the problem is more the line drives we give up (corroborated by stories from hitters of how good our batter’s eye is, which leads to hard hits). a quick look at the leaderboards on fangraphs doesn’t show much of a connection between line drive rates and groundball/flyball rates, though i tend to wonder if the hard grass allows for more doubles down the baseline at chase than in other parks
4) since hard hits seem to be the main problem, and it seems we can’t control for it well, then the comparative advantage seems to go to pitchers who can limit walks. flyball pitchers tend to walk people a lot less than groundball pitchers
granted, if we get one of those strike-throwing ground-burners a la the tim hudson mold, i’d be pretty happy too. but i feel like those are a lot rarer than just normal flyball pitchers who can limit their walks
by blue bulldog on Sep 10, 2010 7:48 AM EDT up reply actions
I would disagree, for a couple of reasons
1) Our infield defense isn’t too shabby. The only semi-hole is Kelly at second base, who doesn’t have great range, but I would rate Drew, Reynolds, and LaRoche as above-average defenders at their positions.
2) The fact that balls are hit hard also means that HR/FB rates would be expected to be high. Over the last few years, who knows, but it seems like just a bit of logic to me. Ian Kennedy’s HR/FB is 11.1%, Rodrigo’s is at 13.7%, Barry’s is finally going up, and we all saw what happened to Dan Haren this year.
The limiting walks point is solid, because hard hit balls are going to happen at Chase and it’s better if there’s not free base-runners on when they do, but I’m not sure about the ground-ball/fly-ball pitchers having dramatically different walk totals. Does this come from the simple idea that a diving sinker is harder to control than a straight four-seamer?

sounds like a good prospect
when wil we see him, now or next season
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
I do find it humorous
That relievers are ever ranked in the top-20 on teams’ top prospects lists when they don’t have closer potential… BA, I think, had him at #28. That sounds about right.

good non-closer relievers
can still generate 1-2 WAR though……or even more
that’s better than many other prospects
just look at luke gregerson, or matt thornton, or mike adams

Those guys
Are three out of 180 (six non-closer relievers per team in a standard seven-man ‘pen, times thirty teams). I’ll take a slim chance at a legit position player or starting pitcher.

He's had
a good year in Double-A that’ll boost his stock significantly, though. He wouldn’t have been ranked #28 currently.
Mr. Science Boy
He's actually had
A pretty mediocre year in Double-A in terms of rates. Too many walks, far too many fly balls (47.3%).

Double-A
tends to be pitcher friendly, unlike High-A or Triple-A, but he had a pretty good year in High-A.
Mr. Science Boy
Precisely - Suffice it to say
He’s not going to post a 3.2% HR/FB rate anywhere else ever again.
It’ll be a sixth/seventh-inning arm unless the FB% changes. Nice and cheap, though.

And, really
If you can get a cheap sixth or seventh inning arm in exchange for an expensive closer that wasn’t closing, that’s a win.
I don’t think anyone is all that psyched up over Gorgen, just pleased that we got anything in return for an arm that was giving up runs in nearly half of his appearances.
"I hate it when I'm right. Wait- no, I don't."
Exactly.
The big value of this trade was exactly what it was the very moment it was completed – we didn’t have to pay a nickel of Chad Qualls’ remaining salary.
The rest was just a jellybean put on top of the delicious money-filled cupcake.

Silly Rays fans
Thinking they can offer Qualls arbitration for a compensatory pick and that he wouldn’t accept. Tee-hee!
