SnakeBytes, 9/7: Heads Up Edition
Folks, when you go to games, note those signs that tell you to beware of flying objects. And not just for yourself.
Recaps:
-
[dbacks.com] D-backs edged in 11-inning pitching duel - "I was very proud of them today; they did a heck of a job. We played a good game. It was unfortunate that in the end it didn't work out." Very true. It was a disappointing loss, but the pitching and defense did a great job keeping us in that game.
-
[azcentral.com] Diamondbacks fall to San Francisco Giants in 11 innings - An interesting note: "The club rule is that pitchers should run at only 80 percent of their maximum speed when they are on the bases."
-
[foxsportsarizona.com] Post-Game Report (Sept. 6): Kennedy, Montero one happy battery - Kennedy has a start or two left before he hits the soft limit on innings the DBacks wanted to stop him at. He says: "Whenever they tell me to stop, I’m stopping. If they tell me to go, I’m willing to go." I like IPK's attitude about the game.
-
[mercurynews.com] Giants beat Diamondbacks in 11th inning on Schierholtz's triple - "For 10 innings, the Giants and Diamondbacks played scoreless and nearly flawless baseball. Both teams saved runs with diving catches, sprinted for balls in the gap and executed terrific pitch sequences to squelch rallies."
DBacks News:
-
[pal-item.com] Former RiverRat pitcher excels after promotion - Nice article about Derek Eitel, our 17th round pick this season. His favorite part of being a professional ballplayer? Putting on a uniform every day.
-
[azcentral.com] Two children hospitalized after getting hit by objects at Diamondbacks game - A rough weekend for kids at Diamondbacks games.
-
[myfoxphoenix.com] Baseball, Downtown Vendors Suffering - Between bad attendance and a generally bad economy, vendors outside the stadium aren't seeing as much business.
Around Baseball:
-
[fangraphs.com] The Death of Baseball in Portland - Obviously a topic that I feel dearly about, but it's pretty sad to see minor league baseball leave its largest market.
-
[ajc.com] It sounds odd, but here goes: Is Bobby Cox a good manager? - Every manager gets hated on, even a legendary name like Bobby Cox.
-
[nesn.com] Bill Lee Proves He Can Still Pitch, Even at Ripe Age of 63 - When the Brockton Rox called Bill Lee earlier this season to see if hed throw out the first pitch at an upcoming game, the former major league pitcher agreed, but under one condition: he would throw the first pitch, and bunch more after that, too.
-
[yahoo.com] Jason Heyward has been a better rookie than Henry Aaron was - That's a pretty big claim, but he is putting up some good numbers.
-
[latimes.com] Dodgers Manager Joe Torre's silence speaks volumes . . . or does it? - Is Torre coming back to the Dodgers? No one knows.

Yeah, my sister was pretty unhappy to see them go
But she went to the last game and got to run the bases. I told her she has a few years to get another team up there until we move. ’cause MLS is not a worthwhile substitute.

What?
I’m just saying, if I have the choice between soccer and minor league baseball, I vote baseball.

exactly how does one run at 80%?
An interesting note: “The club rule is that pitchers should run at only 80 percent of their maximum speed when they are on the bases.”
this is not interesting, but stupid.
The name of the team is ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS - "I tried to convince them that what they were doing was an aberration, an imbecility, a stupidity without name"
that's seventy-five percent!
The name of the team is ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS - "I tried to convince them that what they were doing was an aberration, an imbecility, a stupidity without name"
Most players don’t run at their maximum speed all the time- that’d be a great way to get injured at worst or exhausted at best. No one is out there sprinting from base to base every single time they run.

From Twitter
Steve Gilbert reports that the Diamondbacks are promoting Cole Gillespie this afternoon. I wonder if it’s because of Upton’s nagging shoulder.
"Robin, some people die of old age. Some people get crushed by a tank shaped like a giant Rubber Ducky. That's life."
Or
Is it because Upton totally sucks cuz his batting average is a few points lower than Parra’s (OBP? Slugging? BAH I SAY!) And despite being younger than most people who post here, will never amount to anything.

Confirmed in offical press release
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have recalled outfielder Cole Gillespie from Triple-A Reno, according to D-backs’ interim General Manager Jerry Dipoto. Gillespie, 26, hit .221 (17-for-77) with 8 runs scored, 6 doubles, a home run and 6 RBI in 32 games over two separate stints with the D-backs this season. He hit .288 (76-for-264) with 54 runs scored, 14 doubles, 6 triples, 8 home runs and 49 RBI in 69 games over three separate stints with the Aces.

Meh.
Gillespie’s gone from extremely promising to filler in a season. Depressing, but life as a prospect in baseball.

Venomous desert creature bit roll call
bit by a brown recluse here in Phoenix on the center my chest (while sleeping) some 20 years ago. The doctor pulled out a plug of necrotic tissue the size of a man’s thumb. The venom was working toward my heart.

I didn't even realize it had happened
until like late the next day. By that evening, I was doubled over in pain, went to Scottsdale Memorial, and the toxicologist was like, “Classic Recluse Bite, another few hours, and probably permanent heart damage.” The pain from that little bite was unbearable.

Number one scariest moment:
forced landing in a mountain wilderness area in a snowstorm (IFR conditions).
The Great and Mighty....
My #1 Scariest moment
Riding my bike home from a softball game, lightning struck the front tire of my bike and I was thrown off and into a ditch. This happened about a mile from home and I thought i could get home before the storm hit. Boy was I wrong :(
"In the book of life, the answers aren't in the back." ~Charles M Schulz
Yes
And my friends wonder why I can’t stand thunderstorms to this day…
I seriously lucked out, although I was banged up pretty good from the rocks I landed on in the ditch. I stayed put in there too until the storm was over.

That's the Venomous Desert Creature Comment of the Thread
Right there. The rest of you might as well just give up and go home…
My nearest incident was coming into the kitchen in the middle of the night and seeing what I thought was bag of beads on the floor, so I picked it up. It was only when it started whirring angrily, that I realized it was a Palo Verde beetle, roughly the size of a dinner-plate*.
All I could say after my shrieks awakened the rest of the house was, “I can’t believe I picked the f______ up!”
[* May not be actual size.]

Those things ARE huge though
and from what I hear, can be rather nasty themselves. The desert: where everything living will bite, sting you, and/or kill you.
The Great and Mighty....
They have nasty pincers, yes
The pest control guy swung by the next day and said they are almost impossible to kill because of the carapace. You can shoot them or run them over in a truck, and that’s about it. Stand on them, and they’ll be like “What?”, unless you do that whole Bruce Lee, leap in the air and twist the foot stomping thing. Here’s a pic of one:

Mr. Science Boy
Yeah,
and unfortunately, thx to the legislature, he doesn’t need a CCW anymore to be packin’ heat, either.
Mr. Science Boy
Exactly
also glad the girlfriend was thinking clearly and got me to the hospital because I would have said, “Oh it hurts, what time do I have to be at work?” Dumb guys.
The Great and Mighty....
See scorpion story below.
Once came about 6 inches from being bitten by a rattler. Was out taking a walk by night, and walked off the road to… relieve myself. Right after I was done, I noticed that there was a coiled up baby diamondback a few inches away from my foot.
Mr. Science Boy
Holy crap Nascar!
How scary is that?!
"In the book of life, the answers aren't in the back." ~Charles M Schulz
It was only scary
when I found out about it at the hospital, and the doc pulled the plug of dead tissue out. That was scary. And painful. But up to that time, I thought it was just a bad sore. Dumb kids.
The Great and Mighty....
I can imagine!
You’re lucky you got there before the poison could get to your heart!
"In the book of life, the answers aren't in the back." ~Charles M Schulz
It was the girlfriend who had sense about her
I was just going to keep throwing on some topical analgesic and go on until it went away. “Oh yeah, it hurts like hell, but it’s just a sore. Nothing worth spending a bunch of money for.” Yeah, right. You gotta’ take bites very seriously here in Arizona.
The Great and Mighty....
never bitten
but when I was young and living in ’Zona one of those little poisonous white scorpions was chilling in my crib with me when my dad came to wake me up.
4 scorpions
Different times. Last one sent me to the hospital with swollen tongue and I blacked out eventually. In the second day of a one week window without health insurance. $2500. Ka-ching.

How to make a better next year
We need to start cleaning house, Make Gracy and Sutton go to the east coast where we don’t have to watch them.
We can get both of them out of broadcasting booth and get some good commentators. Maybe the Dodgers will trade Vin Sculley for Upton?
Get rid of Upton, if I hear “he is only 23 years old” one more time I will p-ee on the one who says it. We were beat by a 21 year old pitcher and 23 year old catcher for the Giants.
Reynolds is this years CY. Trade him or send him to the minors to figure it out.
no more Qualls, I can’t stand him.
Gibson has been ineffective, time to bring in Pat Murphy from San Diego, he was the ASU coach that put together the #1 team in the nation.
I thought one of the reasons Hinch was fired was he depleted the farm system? Well D’backs have a need and ASU has the talent, But out of the D’Backs brain trust nothing happened.
Not one ASU player was taken till the 600th pick by the D’backs in the draft, and they are just 5 miles away… ?
D’backs pick Only five LHP drafted. 20 RHP!!!
San Diego Padres Pick 2 ASU players. EIGHT LHP. St.Louis took a bunch from ASU, but they are winners.
Get rid of the hiting and pitching coaches too!!!!
Jack Howell Batting Coach … hit .239 with 108 home runs and 337 RBI in 941 career games …
Mel Stottlemyre Pitching Coach …. His lone stint in the Majors was in 1990 with the Royals when he went 0-1 with a 4.88 ERA in 13 games (2 starts).
I will root for San Diego the rest of the season. At least I have some connection to coach Murphy.
He's only 23
If Reynolds is this years CY then why would you trade him since he’ll be an all-star next year?
Qualls hasn’t been on this team for a month?
College success always converts to professional success. Right Pete Carroll?
Yes we’ll just draft all of ASU because they’re close and are semi-successful in the college ranks. Great draft strategy.
The LHP to RHP ratio in the MLB is what 1 to 5? Scarcity of resources is no excuse not to draft every LHP in the draft Diamondbacks!
Did the Dbacks not draft your son out of Arizona State? Did they not draft you? Are you left handed?
Professional playing careers tell a lot about future coaching careers all the time. Right professional journeyman catcher turned HoF pitching coach Dave Duncan?
I’m sure GLB would love to have you.
13 ASU players have made the major leagues since 2000
5 of them are actually every day players (Kinsler, Pedroia, Ethier, Leake, Davis). 2 of them have just arrived on the Major League scene this year (Davis and Leake). 1 of them was a transfer from Missouri (Kinsler).
ASU is one of the core traditional college baseball powerhouses
but it’s focus over the years has been more on hitting than pitching. At least it was when I was there and Jim Brock was coach. The approach to pitching was definitely cookie-cutter mechanics, which actually isn’t bad, but they had definitely had difficulty coaching hard throwers. A lot of it had to do with the metal bats and defensing against the hyped-up baseball muzzle velocity coming off the metal bat.
The Great and Mighty....
not saying anything bad
just pointed out the limited quantity of talent coming out of the school. He is acting like any ASU player you pick up will be lock HoFer
BOBBLE HEAD DOLL
