SnakeBytes, 9/2: Broom Goes the Diamondbacks Edition
Look. I know that the past week or so isn't a sure-fire sign that suddenly, things are good on the Diamondbacks, and we're gonna be awesome from here on out. But, for the first time in quite a while? It's possible to enjoy baseball for a while. This has to be about our best stretch of play since... What, April 2008? Let's enjoy the day off, and keep up the good work tomorrow.
Recaps:
-
[azcentral.com] Arizona Diamondbacks finish off sweep of San Diego Padres - Brandon Allen pulled an all-nighter to get to Chase in time for yesterday's game. The DBacks are now considering hiring a guy to make sure he never sleeps again.
-
[dbacks.com] Just called up, Allen grand in win - What did Barry Enright think about Allen's defensive gems? "Unbelievable. I cannot say enough."
-
[foxsportsarizona.com] Post-Game Report (Sept. 1): Brandon Allen makes memorable return - Impressively, Allen had only played 33 games in left this season before yesterday's debut.
-
[signonsandiego.com] Rookie's slam, Padres error lead to seventh straight loss - Tejada on his missed catch: "I lost it a little because of the angle with the stands and it caught my (bare) hand and not the glove." The angle of the stands. That's a new one.
-
[dbacks.com] Allen adds versatility to D-backs' roster - If Allen can thrive at either first base or left field, he'll fill one of the positions that has been a torn in the side of this team for quite some time. In other news, the prank war between Kelly Johnson and Adam LaRoche may not be over.
-
[azcentral.com] Nick Piecoro: Agent's comparisons don't bolster Webb's case - Jonathan Maurer talked Webb's contract hopes in terms of pitchers like Brad Penny, Rich Harden, or Tim Hudson. How have those contracts worked out for the teams that offered them? (Hint: Not well.)
-
[foxsports.com] D-backs launch search for next GM - According to Jon Paul Morosi, the Diamondbacks will start interviews soon. He's got a list of six people the Diamondbacks intend to speak to: two each from the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, and Yankees organizations.
-
[rgj.com] Reno Aces: Right at home - The Aces have a home secured for the next few years- the Portland Beavers only wish they were so lucky.
I tried posting these earlier, but got blindsided by Gaby Sanchez in the middle of typing. Don't worry- he won't be causing us any more problems.
Around Sports:
-
[latimes.com] Frank McCourt has taken Dodgers deep in debt - $433 million in debt? Remember at the beginning of the season when Dodgers fans kept trying to argue their team wasn't in financial trouble? (I know I keep posting about the Dodgers situation. Maybe I should start up a Your Daily Schadenfreude feature.)
-
[yahoo.com] TBS postseason song news: Bon Jovi out, Kid Rock in - Kid Rock? Is it 1999 again, and no one told me?
-
[detnews.com] Max St-Pierre finally earns big-league shot with Tigers - Guy spends 14 years in the minors, and finally gets his shot. With a sympathetic manager, too- Jim Leyland spent 18 years in the minor leagues, and never made it to the majors. "Max will play. He will get into a game, I assure you."
-
[fipflopflyin.com] Bobblehead Giveaways 2010 - Do you like bobbleheads? Do you like infographics? Jackpot! Interesting to see who gives away bobbleheads, and what teams you shouldn't get your hopes up about.
-
[yahoo.com] Vuvuzelas banned from Euro 2012, Champions League - Unacceptable.

I liked
that bobblhead graph. I’m still debating whether I want to make the trip down to Chase this Saturday to get a Miggy bobblehead (oh, and I guess watch the D’backs).
And when something falls out of place, I take my time, I put it back.
I am going on Saturday
SO if anyone wants a bobblehead, let me know. I can always buy a cheap ticket and gets extra bbhs for anyone who wants one

someone had
a vuvuzela at an aquasox game the other day. i freaking nearly killed them.
the st-pierre story makes me a little teary, though. i hope he does well :)
Is it true
that Gaby Sanchez is starting this Sunday for the Dolphins? It was an awesome hit.
I got nothin'.
well it helped that
he had 50 pounds on Morgan and Morgan never saw him coming.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
Speaking of Bobbleheads
you can sign up to try to win all of this years Dbacks bobbleheads, on their web site.

I got nothin'.
I'm still
waiting for my Gonzo signed bobblehead.
And when something falls out of place, I take my time, I put it back.
I'm still waiting, too
Honestly, I’m getting tired of camping outside your house to try to ambush the delivery.
"Robin, some people die of old age. Some people get crushed by a tank shaped like a giant Rubber Ducky. That's life."
Dangit!
You fall asleep in the car for two hours…
…and then get towed…
…and wake up in the hospital with heat stroke…
…and miss picking up the wife from work…
…but worst of all, I didn’t get to steal your bobblehead! Curses!
"Robin, some people die of old age. Some people get crushed by a tank shaped like a giant Rubber Ducky. That's life."
You are waiting for a train
A train that will take you far away. You know where you hope the train will take you, but you can’t be sure. But it doesn’t matter because you and the bobblehead will be together.
And when something falls out of place, I take my time, I put it back.
To break soco's window to get into the house and search for the bobblehead, turn to page 38.
To just burn down the house to be sure NOBODY will ever have that bobblehead, turn to page 79.
Mr. Science Boy
Nyjer Morgan
From ESPN.com: He’s likely to face discipline from Major League Baseball, as well as Marlins pitcher Chris Volstad, who threw at Morgan, and other members of both teams who scuffled in the fifth inning of Florida’s 16-10 win.
So, class, what should we do to make that sentence clearer? This way, it seems that Morgan is likely to face discipline from Major League Baseball, Chris Volstad, and other members of the team. Seems unfair that all the rest of the guys pile on, doesn’t it?
If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there are men on base. ~Dave Barry
I think
he already faced discipline from Chris Volstad and other members of the team, especially Gaby Sanchez.
Mr. Science Boy
Well, I'm off the clock right now,
but my sublime editing skills would rearrange the sentence to something like this:
“Discipline members to and other Major fifth 16-10 Marlins Florida’s likely of teams face Baseball Chris threw scuffled both who pitcher he’s from Volstad League as win as well at who in the inning of Morgan.”
Should be noted
that Azreous no longer works for the Arizona Daily Sun, but rather, for the Dagobah Times.

That is why you get paid the big bucks
Because work of that quality should be rewarded by novelty-sized pretend currency, rather than actual money.
"Robin, some people die of old age. Some people get crushed by a tank shaped like a giant Rubber Ducky. That's life."
Yes.
Good work.

I just heard from Gambo on 620 that we aren’t likely to pick up the team option for Adam LaRoche next year. If that’s true than I’m very disappointed in the organization. Very rare does a guy play hard, work hard, want to stay with the team, and is a good guy in the locker room. And we are gonna let him walk away.
by jryanwalters on Sep 2, 2010 5:25 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Free Agent 1B
Gambo mentioned signing a free agent 1B such as Nick Johnson, Lance Berkman, Lyle Overbay, or Troy Glaus instead of bringing back LaRoche.
Ahh, I didn’t catch that part. Must have been on the phone. I wouldn’t mind Johnson or Berkman. As long as they are below 5 mill. If we decide to spend over 5 mill on 1B I would rather keep LaRoche and pay the extra two mill.
by jryanwalters on Sep 2, 2010 5:36 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I wouldnt mind berkman or overbay but No Nick Johnson please.
Dude cant stay healthy to save his life.
"A couple of years agoi was hitting 170 in 60 at bats and everybody was ready to kill me Guess what happened? Laser Show!
I agree, so I say if not LaRoche than Berkman. And if not Berkman than keep LaRoche. I don’t think we need to take a step back when we are finally getting things together.
by jryanwalters on Sep 2, 2010 5:56 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Well we could always Play Allen at first and then get a LF

NO NICK JOHNSON!

Nick Johnson?
OH HELL NO! That guy can’t stay healthy to save his hide and not to mention he sucks! I’d rather we get Overbay back or even Berkman if we can’t/don’t re-sign LaRoche!

nick johnson is really good
when healthy
he’s also a perfect fit for the dbacks because of his insane OBP skills (we desperately need this at the top of the order)
however, i’m not sure i’d want him either because of that health history
by blue bulldog on Sep 2, 2010 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think he can be all that good
If he can’t seem to stay healthy or with one team for a LONG amount of time

?
he had 550 PA in 2009, 630 PA in 2006, and 550 PA in 2005
i agree that it’s probably too big of a risk to be able to get him, but nick johnson is definitely really good when he’s healthy.
he has a career OBP of over 400. how many people do you know have a career OBP of over 400?

That would make a lot of sense
are we sure we’re talking about the Diamondbacks here?
The Great and Mighty....
by NASCARbernet on Sep 3, 2010 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah.
They’re talking another 3ish years maybe.
Mostly using LaRoche as a bridge to the beginning of our next competitive stretch.
Mr. Science Boy
Best case scenario is we keep LaRoche and Allen in the same line up. Allen would help bolster our line up and solidify our LF position. I’d like to see Allen stay in LF to help make a clear path for the 3 or 4 solid 1B prospects we have.
by jryanwalters on Sep 2, 2010 7:17 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Agreed.
Would be nice if LaRoche could hold down the fort until Paul Goldschmidt got here.
Mr. Science Boy
we have a logjam regardless
marc krauss will be competing for a left field spot too
though, competition is never a bad thing
by blue bulldog on Sep 2, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions
I think Goldschmidt has all the right tools to be a difference maker, but he is a year or two away. So yes if we could have LaRoche until than would be awesome. He just seems to fit in here, I don’t know what to call “it”, but he and KJ seem to be good fits.
by jryanwalters on Sep 2, 2010 10:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Both LaRoche
and KJ seem to be enjoying themselves in the desert. Probably partly because it’s a hitter-friendly park, partly because it’s a young yeam, and partly because it’s a low-pressure market, even when we’re winning.
Mr. Science Boy
Just got an alert from KTAR:
“Diamondbacks will call up pitchers Mike Hampton and Zack Kroenke Friday”
Not sure if it’s been mentioned elsewhere, sorry if it was.

it's articles like this
that make me wonder if nick piecoro really just doesn’t do much research when he writes, or if he just says things to appease our owners
“After the past two years, the deal has balanced itself out.” What on Earth is he talking about? What is his justification for making this statement? If what I’m reading is correct, Webb has been paid $28 million these past four years. WEBB WAS WORTH $28 MILLION ALONE FOR HIS PITCHING IN 2007. Basically, he has doubled the worth of his contract, even without having played a single game in 2009 or 2010.
And then, naming Chien-Ming Wang as a more likely comp for Webb than Penny, Hudson, Sheets, or Harden. WITHOUT ANY JUSTIFICATION again. This one was really odd to me, as he spent paragraphs explaining why the other comps don’t make sense. Let’s review Chien-Ming Wang. He had a right foot injury in 2008, and pitched terribly in the beginning of 2009. Speculation was that because of the foot injury, he started changing his mechanics (Chad Qualls knee comp anyone?). Of course, if it were that alone, he could probably fix his mechanics and recover. But no. In 2009, he was diagnosed with hip muscle weakness. Then on top of that he had season ending shoulder surgery. That injury history means there’s a TON of more risk involved in signing Wang than Webb (not to mention, Wang’s upside was never even close to Webb’s). Why would anyone pay 8 million for so much risk, and so little upside? Wang has NEVER in his career even cracked 5 WAR given a whole season of starts. Sheets had an 8 WAR year. Tim Hudson had multiple 5 WAR years, and a 6 WAR year. Harden hasn’t ever cracked 5 WAR either, but that’s also largely because he’s never had a full healthy year. Brad Penny is the only one who’s never had a 5 WAR year, given a full year of starts, but like Piecoro mentioned, he made 30 starts in 2009.
At the end of the day, no doctor has pronounced any structural damage to Webb’s shoulder. Maybe it’s a mental thing. If so, that seems to make Webb a safer bet than the other injury comps, because a mental thing is something you can control, whereas the physical problems for them were not controllable. Besides, Webb will definitely do like Sheets and have throwing sessions. As long as he’s flashing that 89 mph sinker, there’s no way he wouldn’t get an $8 million year deal with incentives.
My 2 cents
I know you are pretty passionate about this. But I agree with what Piecoro is saying (for the most part), and what others have mentioned. I just cant see a starting point of 8 million for Webb right now.
Personally I think Webb kind of owes us for the last two years. Yeah, not much logic in this comment, its just the combined feelings of two lost years, for quite a bit of $, while thinking he was such a huge part of our attempts at October baseball. It would be nice if he and his agent were a bit more agreeable for home town, incentive-laden contract. But that’s life in baseball I guess. I certainly dont begrudge either of them trying to make the most $ out of the rest of his career (I mean, who knows how long it will last).
I enjoy each other’s opinions on it and all the talk its generated (mostly civil, as usual). That said, its kind of beating a dead-horse realm (or getting close). What will be really interesting is ONCE he actually throws again.
Again, just my thoughts.
I got nothin'.
yeah you're right.
it doesn’t matter until webb actually starts throwing and people can see what stuff he has left.
i was just speaking more out of frustration from what i perceive as irresponsible journalism on the part of piecoro. i don’t think he should make claims like the one he did, without substantiation
by blue bulldog on Sep 2, 2010 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions
To be honest,
I thought the exact same thing about Wang — sinkerballer with no previous history of injury until the ’08 season, and I ABSOLUTELY agree with Piecoro that Maurer and Webb are burning their last bridges in Arizona, even including their caveat (that seemed tacked-on) that “wellll… but, we WOULD give first choice to Arizona.” And I thought his comparisons with Harden, Hudson, Penny and Sheets were spot-on.
It bothers me that they’re so obviously just trying to grab a quick one-year deal to get as much dough as possible and maybe prove that Webb’s okay, if he is.
Mr. Science Boy
well, I imagine that a non-interim manager will hire his own guys. Of course his own guy may be the guy they already have (well, if Enright thinks he’s a good PC, someone must be benefiting)
Wonder if the Sox will pick up Mark DiFelice in 2011 if he comes back and the Brewers do as I think they’ll do and let him go.
About Hot Stretches
This has to be about our best stretch of play since… What, April 2008?
Well, 6-1 in their last 7 games. Definitely better than what we had been seeing. They were 12-13 in their previous 25 games before these recent 7 games.
In 2009 the team was 19-10 between July 4th and August 6th. We haven’t had any kind of sustained run like that this year. But there is still almost a month to go……so no time like the present to keep the forward momentum. I am really hoping to see the team finish strong this month. That would be a great sign from both a character and a development standpoint.
