SnakeBytes, 8/31: Month End Edition
Dear Diamondbacks: Keep on doing what you're doing. Thanks
Recaps:
-
[azcentral.com] Arizona Diamondbacks' Mark Reynolds ends slump with 2 home runs in win over San Diego Padres - Mark's thoughts on changing Chase Field? "They can have the pitchers throw rolled up socks and move the fence back 50 feet; it don't matter. We're still going to come out here and play. If it helps instill confidence in our pitchers, then more power to them."
-
[dbacks.com] Saunders gets redemption in win over Padres - "I was like, 'C'mon, this can't be going on again." And we were right there with you, Colonel.
-
[foxsportsarizona.com] Reynolds homers twice as D-backs beat Padres 7-2 - "I stayed positive and my defense played excellent behind me, and the run support and the way we were swinging the bat, the guys did the little things."
-
[azcentral.com] Arizona Diamondbacks' Stephen Drew hasn't changed a thing during hot streak - "It's one of those things that every hitter goes through in a season, and you just try to keep it up as long as you can."
-
[dbacksvenom.com] Diamondbacks Clinch First Winning Month of the Season - What's brought us to this surprising result? Check out our monthly ERA- it's respectable!
-
[dbacks.com] Upton experiencing left shoulder irritation - "It just happens every once in a while. Last year I bounced back from it pretty quick. Right now it's up in the air, but hopefully it will be a pretty quick recovery."
-
[foxsportsarizona.com] Webb may be pricing himself out of D-Backs' future - "It is a very strong stand." That's some understatement from Derrick Hall.
-
[fanster.com] It's Time to Remove the Interim Tag from Kirk Gibson - A winning month, a week of good play against playoff hopefuls- has Gibbie earned the a permanent job?
-
[si.com] Aroldis Chapman tops 10 major league September call-ups - If you shuffle past the over-hyping, Brandon Allen also gets a mention.
Around Baseball:
-
[mlb.com] COL@SF: Gonzalez triples, two runs come in to score - Now that's failure. Those runs are more on the Giants defense than on the Rockies offense.
-
[si.com] Bud Selig on drug testing, 'true World Series' and new statue - Blah blah blah steroids, what I find interesting is this: "Selig said he's working on a "true World Series" and he's working with the Japanese league to make that happen. Selig said that he's met twice with the Japanese commissioner this year." Coooooool.
-
[espn.com] Sizing up the NL Cy Young race - Two names draw top mention: Halladay and Wainwright. Ubaldo's decline has take its toll.
-
[fangraphs.com] I Really Had a Blackout | FanGraphs Baseball - In 2008, MLB President Bob DuPuy said his goal was to reduce how many games were blacked out. What's happened since then? Well, to sum it up: [this space left blank].
And so we take on the Padres again. Ian Kennedy started off this losing streak for them, and we'll look to him to continue it.

Humph
I guess the links I clipped weren’t “good enough” or something…

- [Fox Sports Arizona] Remaking Chase – Some guy says tailoring Chase Field to fit the fly-ball tendencies of the D-Backs’ young pitchers is not such an outrageous idea.

I dont think its prudent to take off the interim tag while we have an interim GM still.
I got nothin'.
the thing is
let’s say we don’t sign webb for 8 million. then we’d have basically our entire roster while spending only 45 million.
of course this is a moot point, if we decided to cut all our expenses in order to get cliff lee at 20 million per year……but since that seems highly unlikely
i feel like there’s nothing wrong with signing webb for 8 million to take a shot at competing. like someone else mentioned, webb is probably just trying to use us to land a major contract after the season. if that were true, even better, because he’s going to pitch like crazy, and a 5 or 6 WAR webb could take us to the playoffs.
So did I.
And instead, we spent $6 million on The Injury.
At least Sheets pitched this year.

According to John Gambadoro
Brandon Allen will be one of the four players we’ll see called up from the minors tomorrow.

I was hoping for more than 4
I think Rosales, Abreu, and Gillespie should get called up too. I would have liked to see one or two of the the AAA starters called up. Maybe the team thinks they have already pitched enough for the year?
Gibson says
he doesn’t want to play callups/prospects too much. He said veterans deserve to be able to finish the year.
I hope he was just saying that and doesn’t mean it.

Hmmmm, interesting philosophy
Might differ from the front office’s goals just a tad, though……

Well
at least my wife will be happy.
And when something falls out of place, I take my time, I put it back.
But, no CoJack? No Trent?

Webb overpricing himself?
In other words, he doesn’t have the confidence in his ability to return to full form, so he’s going for the all the gold he can get, just in case…
The Great and Mighty....
Don't think so
In the case of Sheets and Harden, they both showed they could throw their fastball in the 90s and were ready for opening day. If Webb manages to pitch at all this year in the Majors, and is really ready to go for Opening Day 2011, then I don’t think he’ll have any trouble getting that kind of money.
