ESPN Hates on AZ again....
I saw this article and once again it reinforced the AZ bias (or should I say failure to acknowledge the existence of) from ESPN. To not pick Barry Enright is an opinion and I guess even stupid people are entitled to theirs, but to not even mention him in the article is ridiculous. To put up the numbers he has, against the teams he has and the pitchers he's faced, deserves some love. 'Nuff said.

Meh
Really not that much to get worked up about.
We can take smug satisfaction that Enright will actually be pitching in the near future.
Bad doormat! No stock options!
I have added my 2 cents worth…. this is my reply on the ESPN Article….
ok… the ESPN Strasburg bias has shown its ugly head again…. I do know at least one better Rookie Starting Pitcher in the NL… however he’s pitching on one of the struggling teams… his name… Barry Enright… check his stats… is better than King Stephen… and should warrent consideration for the full NL Rookie of the year….
Professional Lurker... if you see this, there may be a problem..
Chipped in as well
And not even a mention of Barry Enright or Dan Hudson? Two of the best starters in the NL, sporting ERAs of 2.44 and 1.85 in their seventeen starts for the Diamondbacks? Hudson has thrown seven or more innings every start – something Strasburg has managed just twice – while Enright hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any game. Oh, but they don’t play on the East coast, do they?

Now there is a Padres fan whining about Matt Latos' ineligibility.
All Cubs fans are drunken assholes, but not all drunken assholes are Cubs fans.

he does have a point
it would be Latos hands down if it weren’t for a few innings last year
/AZCentral'd
hudson has the same problem as latos
the innings requirement

i just mean for this article
i don’t think he mentioned anyone who wasn’t only called up this year, did he?
or maybe not? was niese called up last year?
by blue bulldog on Aug 29, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Niese was up last year
iirc, he made his MLB debut against the Brewers, which is the only reason I remember.
not sure if he used his rookie eligibility all up, and I can’t check it right now.
no he shouldn't not with th erookie class of 2010, but neither does Strasburg
Strasburg has generated a ton of media and he is a very good young pitcher, could really compete in the future for CY probably if he recovers from TJ but he does not deserve to be mentioned for the NL ROY and neither does Enright
Enright has come up and played nice, he is really restoring hope to the AZ fanbase. In past seasons I would say witha half of seasons work he could win the ROY but not in 2010
there are a ton of great rookies this season, I did a post at Amazin Avenue on it;
Castro, Posey Johnson, Jay, and Tabata are all hitting over .300
Davis, Sanchez, Colvin, Heyward, and Stanton are at 14 or more HR
Sanchez, Heyward, Davis and Posey are over 50 RBI
Garcia has 12 wins 140+ IP and a 2.33 ERA
Neise and Leake have 8 wins, Neise could easily have 3-4 more wins if the Mets hit also just like Enright
Axord is 19-21 SV/SVO 2.53 ERA
the 2010 class of rookies is too deep with guys who have been up longer and played more
but MLB.cpm is wrong for not even having him on the rookie stat page
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all

Is this more bias?
I clicked on Enright’s espn page and his fantasy outlook says
“With a 39:22 K:BB in 66.1 innings, there’s little reason to think Enright’s success will continue, but ride him while he’s hot.”
Losers makes excuses, winners make it happen.
This is totally valid
But although I’ve been expecting this myself, Enright doesn’t seem to intent on it happening. And I’m soooo okay with that. : )

Enright is indeed outriding his projections
on the other hand, this is exactly the time where we need to tell the stats to shut up, or else we aren’t going to enjoy the ride.

well I do believe that there comes a time
when you have to say “screw the projections” have you seen this guy Pitch?
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
There hasn't been a pitcher in history
Who has out-performed his FIP by 2 runs consistently throughout his career.
I have seen him pitch, and there are a lot of fly balls, and lot leaving the park. Those won’t always stay solo shots. I like the kid a lot, but he’s not an ace.

agreed
but from watching him, he does have impeccable command
if he can keep that up, it’s not inconceivable for him to keep up his better than average line drive numbers, while also keeping more flyballs in the park. his BABIP and HR/FB will probably regress, but it shouldn’t be THAT much. i’d say a 280 BABIP and 9% HR/FB would be reasonable
as mentioned by others too, i think the key to his success in the future will be whether he can keep that walk rate just barely above the 2 BB/9 mark

I will say that the team Kurkjian put together really reflects how awesome
the draft class of three years ago was
/AZCentral'd
it is kind of bad that they don't mention
enright’s performance as a rookie, considering that niese got a mention
people who play fantasy know about him though, for sure
i also don’t think that lineup is incorrect
from that article
But the upside just isn’t there for fantasy owners. He has had some favorable luck thus far, and this run just isn’t going to continue. I’ll take Ian Kennedy and his plus changeup (despite his second-half struggles) over Enright.
read what I could
and the first paragraph seems to be mostly backanded compliments. To paraphrase: “Well those numbers don’t suck but his projections say yadayadayada”.
and outside of the commenters from the snakepit, nobody seems to know that Barry Enright even exists on Kurkjian’s article, much less Dan Hudson. In a way, I’m okay with that because who in the hell was talking about Ubaldo Jimenez two years ago or Mat Latos last year?
If you use your stuff judiciously and effectively, that performance is backed up by results. In all honesty, I could give a crap if he strikes out a lot of guys, the important thing is, is he getting them out, yes or no. So far with Enright and Hudson, the answer is yes. It’s a relatively simple lesson I wish our bullpen would learn, throw strikes, if they hit you, they hit you, but there’s no reason to compound issues by walking folks. You make mistakes, you get hit, most of the time, you got fielders that will cover for you. No defense against putting guys on base with walks.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
really?
I was under the impression that Francis was going to be their Ace with Cook as his steady #2 or #3 and then Ubaldo was simply another guy in the mix, i.e. nasty stuff but lacking consistency yada yada yada…
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
Meh,
The lack of media coverage sucks on one hand, but it also drives down the price of our players. If ESPN was all over Barry Enright and Dan Hudson’s performance, they have an extra chip to play with when it comes time for arbitration or an extension… Now if the keep this up for the foreseeable future, We’ll see the media coverage blow up, especially around the beginning of next season.
