September Call-Ups
As we drag on through the remainder of our painful season I cannot help but think of what September brings. With the roster expanding to 40 players, who do ya'll think will get the call? As my name suggests, I live in Missoula and love cheering for the Osprey. It's so exciting to see when players who began their careers here in this smallish mountain city of Missoula finally make it to the show!
So what do ya'll think? Who will get the call this year to fill out the roster?

Collmenter and Allen for sure.
Since their “main crop” isn’t ready yet, I’m guessing marginal guys get called up to see whether to keep or release.

Collmenter isn't on the 40-man.

Is there anyone due to be thrown off?

I actually think
That we have two spots open (I checked last night). But Rosales and Benson are due back. But Roque Mercedes has been mediocre at Double-A. Clay Zavada could go on the 60-Day DL. Dan Stange hasn’t missed many Double-A bats. Kevin Mulvey appears kind of past it.
So, there are options.

Thanks
After the season, there will be more spots as people leave/are traded but I had the 40 in mind.

Yeah
It’d be a bit hasty to kick Mulvey off of the 40-man mid-season. But if Benson never materializes and Zavada moves to the DL, we could add Collmenter and Torra as freebies to the 40-man, even if we remove one of them the following off-season (Torra, if he fails in the majors).

I imagine it will just be the 40-man roster guys
Who aren’t up and are currently showing any level of success or value in the minors.
- Rosa
- Rosales
- Allen
- Augenstein
- Mulvey
- Valdez
- Kroenke
- Rodriguez
- Benson
- Abreu
- Gillespie
Stange is a question mark – was awful at Triple-A when we sent him down from the majors, and pieced his season back together at Double-A. Not sure if that merits a call-up.

it'd be great
to see collmenter get called up, and even torra, to see how they might fit the team next year. even bullpen outings could be useful…

Unfortunately
Those are guys that you would have to create 40-man roster spots for. Our 40-man currently sports 38 non-60-Day-DL players on it. We have Kris Benson, Brandon Webb, and Leo Rosales currently on the 60-Day DL. Rosales is rehabbing in Reno. Benson has been rehabbing for like the last three months. Webb… meh.
So Rosales will take a spot, and Benson might take a spot. Which means we’d have to clear guys from our 40-man to accommodate Torra and Collmenter. As much of a mess as Septimo currently is, he has a ton of upside. Stange is a possibility, but he’s also younger than Torra and Collmenter is controlled anyways. Mulvey… well, that’s a possibility – we’ve been trying to give him a job for about a year, and he just doesn’t seem to want to take one.

maybe drop benson?
i wouldn’t mind removing mulvey too….i don’t think he plays even a limited role in our future

Mulvey
I think Mulvey might have earned his way back into a September callup. Over his 4 starts in August, he has only allowed 4 ER in 25 IP (1.44 ERA) with 18K and 7 BB. His ERA for the season is now down to 4.48, which is respectable for the PCL.
I think you have to give him at least one more chance
for the sake of not completely losing the Jon Rauch trade. We’re going nowhere so its not like we’re forcing it, there isn’t anything to lose
yep....
Relevant...
he starts tonight against Las Vegas, in case anyone cares. I was gonna go and see the game, but with school starting Monday, I can’t really afford to stay up until 11ish…
My value over a replacement poster is approximately 10.5 runs.
Whaaaat
it’s only Saturday, why not?
I should have a mfin theme song.

his line in recent games
isn’t particularly reassuring, though i guess you guys are right that it wouldn’t hurt to give him another shot
we can evaluate torra and collmenter in the spring anyway
by blue bulldog on Aug 28, 2010 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions
No runs not good enough?
Mulvey hasn’t allowed a single run in his last two starts, with a 13K/3BB ratio. Or are you talking about his recent games in the Majors?
you spoke too soon.....
runs aren’t that big of a deal. peripherals are. especially in the minors. mulvey isn’t an extreme groundball pitcher like miley, so it is not good that he doesn’t strike people out
two games…is way too small a sample size. just look at what happened today
by blue bulldog on Aug 29, 2010 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions
Precisely - FIP
Is far more valuable in the minors.
And really, from a scouting perspective, Mulvey just doesn’t have stuff that looks like it will get big-league hitters out. It’s disappointing, for sure, but it happens.

Good GB rate
I don’t actually think Mulvey is much of a prospect, but I do think he’s worth a look over Rodrigo Lopez in the #5 spot.
And Mulvey does have a very good ground ball rate this year – 51% overall, and better than 2:1 GB/FB ratio. He’s only allowed 11 HR in 156 IP this year, which is very good for the PCL.
It wouldn't hurt to try, I suppose
I think he and Kroenke will get starts come September once we shut down IPK and possibly Hudson (I don’t know if we plan on this). We also could remove Rodrigo from the rotation, too.

I certainly wouldn't mind calling Mulvey up.
Take some innings away from Enright and Hudson, and audition for any future whatsoever with the team.

Plus
I believe guys like Benson & Mulvey will help curtail the innings on our younger guys…..
Professional Lurker... if you see this, there may be a problem..
You could also use
Torra and Kroenke. Since they’ve been better and are fresh faces who have been healthy all year.
It’s all the same, really. Filler is filler.

i don't understand why kroenke's era is so low
he’s walking just as many people as when he was a reliever and he sucked then
just getting lucky imo
by blue bulldog on Aug 29, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Not exactly true.
Kroenke FIP as reliever: 3.91
Kroenke FIP as starter: 3.39
He really never sucked, just got unlucky all year.
It is the PCL – it happens. But he also has improved all of his rates ever-so-slightly in the rotation, leading to better overall success. But it was mostly luck turning on his side for once.

For a couple of months now, I think.
Not his role in the majors except on a fill-in basis, but they had a slot open.

Did you hear Joe Torre whining about September call-ups?
Torre says callups can create ‘unfair’ edge
“It’s very tough playing against those teams, especially in our league where part of it is you’re trying to run your opposition out of players. Basically, people get knocked out of the pennant race by people who have played Double-A ball and maybe four at-bats in the big leagues.”
Really, if your pennant chances can be destroyed by a Double-A player… Well, you probably shouldn’t be in the post-season.

That's because
Torre hates young players and having them on his roster.

well...when you only
have a 3.5% chance at making the playoffs and you’re still trading for people like dotel and podsednik while being in denial of selling manny….
this quote makes all the sense in the world

Well currently
a AA player could get through their lineup without surrendering a run.

He makes it sound like his team doesn't have the option to call up extra players, too.
Gosh, Joe. You’ll just have to defeat the opposition by scoring more runs, rather than by running them out of players. Wah wah wah.

Gee.
It sure must suck to be competitive every year and roll out your playoff lineup daily, as opposed to those miserable small-market scrubs who have the audacity to play some rooks in September.

Brandon Allen, Tony Abreu and Carlos Rosa recalled, Leo Rosales activated.

I desperately want
Allen in the lineup ASAP. And to see him get super pissed that he’s just getting here and take it out by destroying a few baseballs.
