SnakeBytes, 8/2: Welcome Home Edition
So our team comes back, but not quite looking the same. Maybe it's the new players, maybe it's the winning series on the road. Either way, let's hope we can show the Natinals some fight this week.
Previews:
-
[dbacks.com] D-backs return home with new look vs. Nats - Plenty of new faces- over the week, 20% of the roster have either been traded away or sent to Reno.
-
[miamiherald.com] Washington Nationals (46-59) at Arizona Diamondbacks (39-66) - The Nats bring in some familiar faces like Adam Dunn and Livan Hernandez.
-
[cbssports.com] Nationals-Diamondbacks Preview - I guess we should get used to playing Washington- we go visit them next weekend.
-
Preview: Diamondbacks vs. Nationals - How is Kirk Gibson dealing with the trades? "Yeah, there's 25 guys. We try to keep it that way."
After the jump, talk about the trades, and the real reason the Rays wanted Chad Qualls.
Dbacks News:
-
[azcentral.com] Arizona Diamondbacks' Derrick Hall still plans to conduct search for General Manager - Don't get too settled in, Jerry. "We owe it to the organization to go through a process." Derrick Hall also said we'll see more changes in the off-season and perhaps even before the waiver deadline.
-
[examiner.com] What did the Diamondbacks achieve - "In the end, the recent transactions seem to address an overall economic issue rather than putting in place, an cohesive and intelligent plan to build for the future. Perhaps now is the time to think of that "bottom line" in the standings rather than the "bottom line" in the ledger page."
-
[fanster.com] Let the Rebuilding Begin - It's a painful thing to admit, but after already suffering plenty through this season, I think we can handle it. We're rebuilding.
-
[espn.com] The day in home runs - I link because of this ridiculous sentence: LaRoche "became the first left-handed hitter to ever hit a pair of three-run home runs against a left-handed pitcher in the same game against the Mets." On a Sunday, north of the Mason-Dixon line, when the moon was waning.
-
[cbssports.com] Rangers stand tallest after trade deadline - Listed among his winners: Jerry DiPoto. "Rival executives who dealt with DiPoto came away impressed by his honesty, his direction and his no-nonsense approach."
Around baseball:
-
[tampabay.com] Tampa Bay Rays reliever Grant Balfour out 4-6 weeks - The Year of Freak Injuries continues. Grant Balfour was lost to a horseplay injury- "messing around … wrestling, in a way" with his pitching coach during batting practice. As such, they needed a reliever, and we certain had one to offer.
- [yahoo.com] Unreal: These umpires have no idea how the infield fly rule works - Wait, or is it the Year of Bad Umpiring? Guys, we need to get together to figure these things out.
-
[mlb.com] Bonds keeping tabs on A-Rod's chase - Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez- two players you're just thrilled to hear about, I'm sure.
-
[yahoo.com] Rinku and Dinesh go Hollywood with Sylvester Stallone - Remember the two Indian cricket players who joined a reality show and were eventually signed to the Pirates farm system? Yeah, there's a movie script in the works.
There's your links for the day. We'll once again see if our team can put together any sort of momentum off a big win, as we take on the Expos Natinals. Go Diamondbacks!

Any chance
Someone could put together a bit of a recap of how the rosters (major league at least) have had to have been adjusted based on the influx/output of players? Or at least correct my math (I haven’t seen games this week due to work)
Haren → Saunders
Jackson → Hudson
Qualls → Carrasco
Snyder → Crosby?
Where did we make room on the roster for Hester? And what’s going to happen when Church (ugh) gets here? We’re not really going to give significant playing time to Crosby and Church are we?
Pretty much got it
The only step you’re missing is Gillespie going to Reno. That gave us the spot to bring up Hester.
We’ll be making a move tomorrow when Church arrives, but they haven’t announced who that will be yet. And it’s difficult to say how much time either of them will get. I think some of that depends on if we make a waiver trade to send KJ or LaRoche somewhere else.

Not yet
They were going up two Sundays ago… And we traded Dan Haren.
They were then going up last Sunday… And Mark Week happened [and all my other websites getting hacked!]
They are tentatively scheduled for this Sunday, alien attacks and magnetic pole shifts permitting.

I gave DiPoto a C- for his trades at the deadline
Over at purple row: http://www.purplerow.com/2010/8/2/1599610/nl-west-report-sifting-through-the
Arizona was the toughest team tograde given the nature of the trade motives and number of prospects added that I was unfamilar with. Hudson looks like quite the coup though. Am I way off base?

I'd say a C- is probably a bit low
By the very nature of what the Diamondbacks were trying to do, it’s hard to judge the trades now. They cleared a lot of payroll, they got some potential for the future. It hurts like hell to see Haren head to the AL West (especially with my AL team being the Mariners) but it’s what they needed to do. I’d say it’s maybe C+, but more likely an incomplete- we can’t really judge it yet until we see how things go in the off-season.
Ah, and now I see where Raygu is complaining since he isn’t around here. Speaking of the Dodgers trade, didn’t Dodgers fans tell us they didn’t care about losing Abreu for Garland because they had DeWitt and wouldn’t need Tony?

The Snyder trade, to answer your txt from a few days ago,
was almost purely a salary dump, BUT Carrasco is under team control (I believe) through 2012.
Don’t really understand the point of Ciriaco, Church and Crosby, though.
Mr. Science Boy
that was initially my take on the Snyder trade
But given it was the only deal DiPoto included cash in, it didn’t seem that simple. Even at his salary, especially with cash included, it seems like Snyder could have been sold at more than a salary dump. Like Boston a month ago?

lol. I enjoyed the CBSsportsline link about DiPoto most interesting
For a couple of reasons. I for one am pleased with what he did, and I am glad to see he is getting SOME praise. It’s too soon to fully say he is bad or he is good, but i think he took quite a bit of a hit with fans with the Haren trade. Overall, I thought DiPoto did well.
Also amusing from that page…
Nuts: Rays GM Andrew Friedman: As Tampa Bay was scooping up reliever Chad Qualls from Arizona, scenes from The Hurt Locker kept coming to mind. No, Andrew, don’t go near that … AAAAHHHHH! The Diamondbacks’ bullpen is a mine-field requiring the wearing of one of those bomb-squad suits. Going near this mess proves Friedman has the most guts in the game. Now, let’s sit back and see whether escaping that toxic atmosphere can rejuvenate Qualls … and let’s check Friedman for post-traumatic stress syndrome.
I enjoyed reading that article,
until I realized that the guy was also applauding Ned Colletti.
Goes straight to credibility.
Mr. Science Boy
what on earth is the "let the rebuilding begin" article talking about?
if the FO overpays for a mediocre 37 year old “closer” in the form of octavio dotel this summer i’m going to be so pissed
and why is mark reynolds going to be the odd man out this offseason? his defense has improved, his walk rate is higher than ever, his power is right around where it should be (last year’s HR/FB rate of 26% was unsustainable). the only reason his BA has been so low this year is because his BABIP is 50 points lower than his career BABIP! it’s true that his LD and GB rates have gone down, which probably means he needs to tinker with his mechanics…but if we wanted to trade reynolds before the deadline then teams would have jumped at the opportunity (rangers getting cantu? san francisco needing a bat?)
