Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 3: In which we celebrate our Independence
Today is both our Nation's birthday and All-Star selection day. For analysis on the selection of Chris Young as our representative, go to soco and jdub's combined effort here.
I want to say thank you to all the men and women in the military for protecting our Freedoms. I would like to thank my best friend's BF for serving his country as well, in Iraq.
Today's pitching matchup was Dan Haren against Chad Billingsley. Just for fun, here are Chris Young's stats off Billingsley: (not including today's game) 38 PA, 3 HR, 6 RBI, and a .303 BA with a .368 OBP. I would say that is All-Star numbers.
More about the game itself after the jump.
Nothing really doing through the first few innings. In the 3rd inning, with two runners on and two out, Chris Young hit a long flyball to deep CF. It looked like a homer off the bat, but Matt Kemp caught it at the wall for the final out.
In the bottom of the 4th, LaRoche hit a double followed by a Mark Reynolds triple barely under the yellow line on the CF wall. This accounted for the games only run for the Diamondbacks. The final batter of the inning, Kelly Johnson looked like he had hit a 2 run HR down the RF foul line, but replays showed it was a foulball. It was not reviewed by the umpires.
In the top of the 6th, Furcal hit a leadoff double. Ethier then hit a single, scoring the run and making an out at second. This would become a topic of conversation for a little while, as LaRoche had cut off Upton's throw. I believe that Furcal would have been safe anyway, as Montero was not setting up very well to receive it.
Haren's day came to an end after 7 innings and 120 pitches. He surrendered 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. his counter part, Bilingsly went 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 7 hits, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts.
In the last three innings, the Diamondbacks only managed one base runner off Broxton and Kuo, a Chris Young double.
Heilman relieved Haren in the 8th inning. This was another case of an 8th inning bullpen meltdown as the Dodgers would score 2 runs. Heilman got Carrol to ground out, but walked Furcal. Matt Kemp then hit is 15th home run of the year to make it a 3-1 game. Matt Kemp is now 6-8, with 2 HR and 5 RBI against Aaron Heilman in his career. A couple of batters later Casey Blake grounded to Mark Reynolds for the final out of the inning. That was the defensive highlight of the game, hands down.
Kuo ended up facing 7 Dbacks batters in his 2 innings of work, recording 6 strikeouts. On the day, there were 16 strikeouts by Diamondbacks hitters. Jordon Norberto pitched the 9th, making his first appearance since getting called up this morning

Player of the game: Dan Haren, 31.9%
Honorable mention: Mark Reynolds, 3.7%
Emperor of suck: Aaron Heilman, -31.7%
It took 2:57 to complete and the attendance was at 26,517. At the time of the rollcall, Dbacksskins was ahead by 6 posts over Jdub220, I came in third as I had started writing the recap. All three of us had over 120 posts, accounting for 58% of the total posts. Also present were: BattleMoses, Jim McLennan, kishi, Clefo, emilylovesthedbacks, Zephon, Bryan J. Boltik, mRcLeAn60, pygalgia, luckycc, hotclaws, NASCARbernet, soco, SeanMillerSavior.
The comment of the thread is this, in response to a hotclaws post:
The rest of us
are celebrating beating you OH SNAP
by DbacksSkins
(note, only because it is July 4th.)
We had a fun time in the thread today, I thought. There were a couple of comments that I could have made as comment of the day, including one from Jdub. Next game is tomorrow, against the Cubs. It is a day game.
Have a safe and Happy July 4th everyone.

I don't know how
I could’ve been in the running for COTD. All I did was talk about my post count. Seriously.
While I was doing so, this game totally sucked. What a good start by Haren, and it was wasted.

There was a post where you said,
“How could that be possibly be yours?” or something like that and I said twss. I just thought it was funny.
Nice strikeout!

I think you did a great job on your recap :) Happy 4th of July!

To be fair
I havent posted in a while other than today and yesterday. . . I didn’t post during Dodgers W and L, but I can understand how you guys would get upset from my posting the last couple of days

Yep
You didn’t post at all on Friday, and you didn’t post today when we were ahead. Funny, that. As I said, if you don’t post when you’re losing, don’t post when you’re winning.

Good grief, the Better Business Bureau?
I wonder if that guy was LMD? He’s got a couple of fan posts up over there ranting about this site.

Check True Blue LA
Dodgers fan who came over here to pretty much tell us how awesome the Dodgers and Manny are has been whining that he took a tap from the banhammer.

Got it
Thx. Funniest post ever. Nothing to do with his first post being a shameless plug for his own site, and his ones after that being blatant trolling, then.

And the poll in his fanpost:
“Is it right to be banned from a forum simply because you have the name of a rival team?”
71% voted “Yes, it’s fair.”
I LOL’d.
People need to keep voting yes on it.

Bah
4th July and I miss all of the UK vs US banter ;)
Needless to say I hope all of you guys had a great day despite the baseball, and whilst it may not be a national holiday over here (as I write this at work) I can at least shamelessly celebrate my awful fantasy team winning it’s second game in three weeks.
As a band called Yazz once sang, ‘The only way is up’

Happy 4th of July all!!!!!!
I have celebrated so far by grilling a tri-tip of buffalo, drinking a pint of Arrogant Bastard Ale and smoking a cigar.

careful with that buffalo.
There was just a large recall of E. Coli/Buffalo meat.

Frustrated!
Need to change D’back stratagy. I watched the first 4 innings of Sundays game. With a couple of bunts after Arizona had men on first with no outs (twice) then moving them to second from first, one run would have scored in the first when the ball was juggled for a two base hit, instead the runner ended up at third and was stranded. After a triple scored a runner from first with one out. Instead of bunting the man over for a three run lead, the next two batters swung away, as usual, and stranded the runner on third. Score was 1 to 0 after four, when it should have been 3 – 0. If I see another game without imagination I am done for the year as a D’back fan. It’s just too brutal to sit at home and scream the obvious play to call in simple situations. Man on first, no outs, move him to second with a sacrifice bunt. The next batter can move him to third on a deep fly out or score him with a single. Someone, please get Gibson on the horn, I want to chew his ass for acting like the previous two dumbsh*ts that let everyone swing away, despite the situation. Too much pressure on the hitters to demand a clean hit every time up. If the pitcher sees a batter show bunt, he will have to change the way he pitches and may indeed walk the batter, if he is too careful. Every opposing pitcher knows that they can relax and throw their best stuff because these D’backs are going to swing at anything close and the ump will call many more strikes if the batter just stands at the plate, cocked and ready to release. Just bad baseball with no attack element. Shame on Kirk he should know better. I am frustrated and disappointed.
tl;dr
Paragraphs would help.

Ah gotcha
because sac bunts lead to the magical three runs?

Yes!
Because if we’d scored three runs every game this series, we would have lost two games and gone into extra innings on the third.
So long, ol' Muppet arms.
3 runs not magic.
Three runs should be a minimum, and a momentum builder for our team and cause the opponent to press as the game goes on. Who knows how many runs a team can score if the manager puts his players in scoring position every chance he gets.
To let players think they must get a clean hit for anything to happen is wishful thinking at best. Had I been managing and a pitcher shuts my team down completely then so be it. If I play to win, every batter represents a run and I must do my best to help him around the bases to score. That is my job. The batter’s job is to make the play the manager dictates. The game is won or lost at the managers direction or lack of it.
So...
If the manager dictates that his batters get on base, and none of them do, his direction was at fault?
Yep!
That is what the BIGS is all about. It’s his job to know his talent and use it to the best of his and their abilities.
If you have a speedster leading off, have him try to bunt for a hit or slap it over the infield with a choked up bat all the while working the pitcher and infield showing bunt prior to the first pitch.
When a slow footed power guy leads off you want him to be sure to just make contact and put the ball in play, and try to go to the opposite field. Make sure he is not swinging for the fences, all we need is runners on base to begin the dynamics of manufacturing runs.
