SnakeBytes, 7/29: How Many More Games Edition
To answer my own question, 61. And I'm sure some of them have to be better than yesterday's game, right?
Recaps:
-
[dbacks.com] Jackson can't keep up with Doc in loss - Plenty of quotes here, but pretty much all of them about the Phillies. Want to hear about Halladay or Brown? You're good.
-
[azcentral.com] Roy Halladay leads Philadelphia Phillies over Arizona Diamondbacks - I suppose it's fitting, though, because the Diamondbacks didn't do much worth noting.
-
[tsn.ca] Halladay goes distance again, Brown shines in MLB debut - And onward.
-
[philly.com] Phenom Joins the Fun - Fun for the Phillies, that is. We didn't see too much fun.
Whew. Okay, after the jump, some actual links about the Diamondbacks, notes on a few former DBacks managers, and news from the Capital.
DBacks News:-
[The D-blog] A Look at the Arms Coming to Arizona - Who IS this guy? He's totally ripping off the sort of work IHSB used to do for us.
-
[azcentral.com] Arizona Diamondbacks' Justin Upton says injury won't be a problem - Justin Upton sounds confident that he won't be out for long with his hip.
-
[The D-blog] Minor League Report - Brandon Allen has seven home runs in his last seven games. Trade LaRoche!
-
[beyondtheboxscore.com] MLB Strength of Schedule Estimates through 27 July - It's not terribly comforting, but BtBS says we've faced the toughest schedule in the NL this season.
Around Baseball:
-
[espn.com] Orioles Hire Buck Showalter As New Mangager - In a move long-rumored, Baltimore brought aboard Buck Showalter.
-
[politico.com] Jim Bunning brushes back Stephen Strasburg - The senator from Kentucky doesn't want to hear Strasburg's whining. Strasburg has been moved to the 15-day DL, which I believe means he won't be making a start when the Natinals visit Arizona.
-
[azcentral.com] What's up with former Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly - I'm sure many of us know what Brenly's been up to- announcing for the Cubs- but here's a few questions and answers with him.
-
[nytimes.com] Tony La Russa and the Logic Behind the Lineup - Why does La Russa bat his pitcher eighth? Because he can bat Pujols third.
-
[Big League Stew] Batista sends Miss Iowa flowers after quote misses the mark - As expected, Batista drew some fire for his comment on Tuesday, but everyone seems to be taking the joke well.
One last game against the Phillies tonight, and then we head up to New York for a series against the Mets. If you're going to watch today's game, get set to hear a lot about the Phillies' latest move- they just traded for Roy Oswalt from the Astros.
Here's hoping for the best for our guys.

Bob Brenly
He’s been my favourite of the DBack managers so far (although I am liking Gibby too), and I thought this Pitch and Catch interview with Bob was a good one.
Wow, Strasburg hits the DL…I told my best friend yesterday that he was going to end up there…maybe now that will shut down a lot of the hype on him and people will realize he is only human like the rest of the players in baseball.

Oswalt to the Phillies
The Phillies and Astros have agreed to a deal that would send Roy Oswalt to Philadelphia in exchange for J.A. Happ, two prospects, and cash.
Interesting to compare this to the Haren trade – Oswalt is under contract through 2011, with a club option for 2012. Similarly, the Astros get a lesser pitcher back, but neither of the prospects are exactly sure-fire things – one was a second-round outfielder, the other is a 19-year old short-stop with a sub-.700 OPS in A-ball.

Yeah but
THEY GOT CASH! WHY CAN’T WE?!?!??!?! WORST TRADE EVER! FIRE BYRNES AND HINCH!
Bad doormat! No stock options!
BIG ROY OSW-
Wait, not quite.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like mouth?
The cool Snakepit.
Interesting
With the way the market has gone this season, it starts to look like the Rangers gave up more for Cliff Lee than they might have needed to.
"It's a fez. I'm wearing a fez now. Fezes are cool."
It's not just "cash"
it’s cash with italics. See, like, this:
“…for J.A. Happ, two prospects, and cash.”
$11MM is pretty crazy to send along with Oswalt for, as you said, a pitching downgrade and two risky prospects.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like mouth?
The cool Snakepit.
Can I get "cash" in italics?
That’s the kind of cash I want.

Which reminds me
Is IHSB coming to snakepitfest?
