Guest Recapper Needed For Sunday

First Sunday of the month time, and that means it's time for a guest recapper. As before, what we do is throw open the game recap to a fresh voice, outside the usual circle of semi-jaded, hard-bitten writers, typing with a bottle of gin in their back pockets [hey, we have to get through the games somehow].

You do it as a Fanpost, and we then promote it to the front-page, send it off to Yahoo, etc. We also do the roll-call and add the Fangraph, so you can just concentrate on the actual recap. Post in the comments if you're interested in doing a recap - preference is given to people who haven't done it before, and those who have contributed positively in other ways e.g. fanposts, comments, etc.

Hey

We don’t get paid well enough at this gig to afford bottles of gin for our recaps. We have to make our own moonshine.

Oh, man...

I had a very bad experience with moonshine in college.

if so, sign me up.

Nope

But we’ll send you a LMGTFY link for instructions on how to make it yourself.

Quick question

How do you do the recap? I mean, is there a site that gives you what happened, because I’m assuming you don’t have to remember every exact detail and thing that happened in the game, and then write it down?

by Skii on Jul 28, 2010 2:01 AM EDT reply actions

Results may vary.

Some folks watch the entire game and take notes as they go. Me, I usually watch the game as much as I can (work and other things depending) and then use the MLB/Yahoo box score or play-by-play as a refresher or to fill in the gaps. Fangraphs is a nice backup source as well.

by Azreous on Jul 28, 2010 6:53 AM EDT up reply actions

My technique is to take some notes during the game, look for something positive, bitch about the negatives, and drink more beer. Seems to work.
Of course, I’ve only done two recaps, so it’s a small sample size.

I'm working my way to grumpy old curmudgeon status with all the grace I can muster.

I make

it up as I go.

There are plenty of sites

That give you play-by-plays, e.g. ESPN. For instance, here is last night’s game. You don’t have to recount everything, but gamelogs like that are useful for remembering, say, in exactly which innings we left the bases loaded.

Have you read some of our recaps here?

Or AP recaps? It’s just like that… we cover the main scoring plays, and the missed scoring opportunities. You don’t have to cover every inning if nothing happens in those innings. I usually check what I remember with a play-by-play site like espn or yahoo.

Personally

I’ve just used the same recap for every game this season. No one’s noticed.

"It's a fez. I'm wearing a fez now. Fezes are cool."

by kishi on Jul 29, 2010 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

And it's not even a real game

It’s just a summary of “Angels in the Outfield.”

Ooooh.

I had wondered why your recaps always featured a picture of Christopher Lloyd.

"AP recaps? It’s just like that…"

Well, except when they turn into Mad Libs or are done in the style of 30’s pulp-horror writers. You don’t generally find AP recaps doing that…

I pretty much

just copy and paste the AP recap. It still takes me like 8 hours to do, though.

Good luck, terps

you’ll be the first to cover Hudson! Hopefully Saunders’ winningness can rub off on him. Also, Pit, we need a nickname asap for Hudson.
