Where Does Barry Enright's Debut Stand In Arizona History?
This afternoon, Barry Enright became the thirteenth major-league pitcher to debut by making a start for the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a successful outing, Enright picking up the W as the visitors defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a margin of 4-2. He did walk rather too many people, though is hardly alone there in recent Diamondbacks history, but only one Cardinals player crossed home-plate on Barry's watch.
Turns out, using Bill James' Game Score metric, to be the best such opening game by a Diamondback in over three years, since Micah Owings got his career under way with five innings of one-hit ball in April 2007. After the jump, we'll list off all the other dozen.

As you can see, Enright is the fifth debutant to get the W in their first game - only Guzman went on to record a W in his second start as well, however. A couple of players you might think have been omitted - Brandon Webb and Max Scherzer. However, neither of these actually started in their first game. Webb pitched mop-up duty in the ninth innings of a loss in Montreal, while Scherzer had a more memorable appearance, retiring all 13 batters faced, including seven by strikeout, in 4.1 perfect innings of relief against the Astros. For the record, however, the Game Scores in their first starts were 80 and 29 respectively.
Amusing, if appropriate to note that the two worst debuts of all time by an Arizona starter both came in 2004. Daigle's was truly appalling, and his performance that season - a 7.16 ERA over 49 innings - is among the all-time most ineffective. It's Exhibit A for anyone who reckons Cactus League stats are meaningful, because that spring, the two best ERAs (min. 15 IP) were Daigle and Steve Sparks, whose ERA in the regular season was also above six. Thus far, Enright has certainly been better than either, and on the basis of this showing (obviously, small sample size, blah blah), would seem to represent a better option for the rotation than Dontrelle Willis.

You might forgive me
for not exactly being super impressed, given that his game score was only 3 points ahead of Cesar Valdez’s, and was the best since Micah Owings’ debut.
Neither of those dudes have exactly proven themselves MLB-quality starters.

Small sample-size, duh...
For the record, Randy Johnson’s Game Score in his major-league debut = 49. He turned out ok, I vaguely recall. :-) Enright was also better than Tim Lincecum (33) and Dan Haren (48) in their debuts…

Naturally.
But you also entitled this post “Where Does Barry Enright’s Debut Stand In Arizona History”.
Besides Barry Enright, the pitchers on this list have respective career ERA+’s of 95, 90, 85, 100, 60, 83, 94, 59, 79, 69, 88, and 70.
The 60 belongs to Cesar Valdez, who may yet raise his, and the 59 belongs to Bryan Augenstein. Same story. Micah Owings’ ERA+ of 90 seems unlikely to improve at this point. The only pitcher who posted even a career league average ERA+, John Patterson, “officially” retired in 2009 at the age of 30, but he last pitched in MLB in 2007 at the age of 29. Let’s just say his 100 was significantly buoyed by a single season as, essentially, the Nats’ ace, in 2005, with an ERA+ of 130. Nice to be pitching in RFK, eh?

Well,
the easy solution to this is to have our rookie starters make their first appearance in relief, and then start. That worked out pretty well for the law firm of Webb and Scherzer.
Notice my use of the word "debut"
If I intended this to be some kind of preternatural projection of his entire career, I would have omitted the word.
And as debuts go, this one went pretty well. What happens from here, who can say?

I've noticed that the picture is the same as the Snake Bytes picture
am I correct in assuming that this picture of Enright was the only picture from tonight’s game that wasn’t of Albert Pujols?

In my defense
My post was pre-scheduled, so I hadn’t seen SnakeBytes at the time I picked the photo. I’ve found another one!

I forgot about that Scherzer appearance
if that didn’t make you giddy as a school girl I don’t know what could. That was magnificent.

Was the 1st game Webb started the one against the Mets? I totally don’t remember him coming in for relief against Montreal. Then again, it was Montreal. There is a greater than normal chance that I may not have watched that game.
I do indeed remember Scherzer coming in against Houston. That was really the only thing worth remembering about that game. Thought he looked great in that first appearance.
hey he won,
that is what it is about, pitching well enough for a W, and Albert Pujols in the lineup is a tough debut.
still, the Cards are unimpressive this season
