A.J. Hinch says majority of save opps will go to Heilman, "but he might be needed in the 7th and 8th, too... We’ll piece it together at the end the best we can," Hinch said, naming Vasquez, Gutierrez & Boyer as possible setup options.

Where does this leave Qualls?
If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there are men on base. ~Dave Barry
On one hand, coolio
‘cause I’ve wanted to see Heilman close, though most of us probably assumed he’d take over. But… well, if 2/3 of our “setup options” include the names Gutierrez and Boyer, no me gusta y estoy triste.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like mouth?
useless and hated
prediction:
heilman will not be a success as a closer. (even if for the fact there will be zero setup left.)

I don’t think you’ll find many who disagree. But what other choice do we have?

all right.... here we go
maybe i can get away with this now that he’s thrown 3 decent innings in a row: i always felt it should be gutierrez.
maybe it’s a good thing i’m not the coach that gave him the job, because if he bombed (as he did as non-closer) he may never get the chance again.
i never liked qualls much, and guti finished last year impressively and was nearly perfect in the spring (i think?). i thought he earned it and was the best bet/hope. still do, actually. ::ducks for cover::

Gutierrez definitely has to be our long term solution, but why risk the chance of him imploding this year (not to mention pushing up his arb #s) to throw him in at closer. No, he needs to prove that he can be an effective/dominant pitcher for long stretches before I’d hand him the job in the 9th again.

and on Qualls, please stop the hate. the guy has been above average every season except this one, outperforming his trade counterpart, jose valverde during his overpriced years in houston. has Qualls been a dumpster fire this year? absolutely. do we all wish we would have kicked in the few extra mill to get valverde instead of howry now? absolutely. but saying “i never liked qualls much” i think is pretty unfair.

i guess i'm unfair when it comes to qualls then
but i wouldn’t call it “hate”.
really, i just have low expectations of him. when we batted against him in hou, i was glad. when he was brought in to face the white sox, i was beyond optimistic (for the sox). and it’s true i didn’t think they got enough back in the valverde trade.

...?
You don’t think we got enough back for Jose Valverde? Really??
Valverde WAR:
2008: 0.8
2009: 0.7
Total: 1.5 WAR — not to mention the overrated price of an arbitrated closer. So, without even looking at financials, we gave up 1.5 WAR, in exchange for:
Gutierrez WAR:
2009: 1.5
2010: -1.1
Qualls WAR:
2008: 2.1
2009: 1.2
2010: 0.1
Burke WAR:
2008: -0.2
So, we traded two seasons of Valverde, totalling 1.5 WAR, for six seasons of Qualls, Gutierrez, and Burke, totalling 3.6 WAR — over double the production. Gutierrez’s 2009 was as valuable as Valverde’s 2008 AND 2009 — and Qualls’ 2008 was 30% more valuable than Valverde’s entire tenure in Houston.
Sorry, but we won that trade handily.

Thx Skins. Very well said.

YES!
Even though the setup will suck now.
But I’m hoping that Qualls does better in lower leverage situations.

As for Qualls
I’d make him the water boy!

I dunno
I don’t remember every specific exchange here. What do you want from me???? ::sobs::
