Diamondbacks to acquire Dontrelle Willis for Billy Buckner, pending physical

Dontrelle Willis will attempt to resurrect his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The Detroit Tigers will trade Willis to the Diamondbacks pending completion of a physical, a major league source told FanHouse.

See the previous story on the SnakePit for more on Willis and Arizona - no detailed word yet on what the team has had to give up to get the former Rookie of the Year pitcher, but it's apparently a pitcher on the 40-man roster and we only have to pay league minimum. Here are the current residents of the 40-man roster.

Update: @Gambo620 Billy Buckner is the player going to Detroit in the trade for Dontrelle Willis

We'll update this story as more is known.

According to John Gambadoro on Twitter, we’ll give up a pitcher on the 40 man roster and we’ll only pay league minimum for the D-Train.

Awesome

we’ve got plenty of subpar pitchers that are worth giving up to see how Dontrelle does if we’re only paying league minimum…

And

Nick Piecoro says that it’ll “almost certainly” need approval from Selig’s office since we’ll have cash changing hands.

(Seriously, as much as ’Skins loves to hate on Twitter, it is pretty awesome at times like this.)

Aaron Heilman
Zach Kroenke

Jordan Norberto

Carlos Rosa
Leo Rosales
Leyson Septimo

Some pretty good pluses:
They’re paying it all except for the prorated minimum.
We get rid of Buckner.
Willis is moving to the NL.
He’s a lefty.
He has a pretty cool nickname.

So when Benson comes back

Do we move Willis to the ’pen?

Wear your own fur.

by Marc Fournier on Jun 1, 2010 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

I'd assume

it heavily depends on Saturday.

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like mouth?

by Wailord on Jun 1, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if he pitches well

I’d say we bring Benson back for the fifth spot seeing as how he was holding the fort pretty well before his injury. Then we could put Willis in the ’pen for some LHP relief and send down that lost cause of Saul Rivera so he can get some work in at Reno.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Billy Buckner worth 8 million plus. Suckers! That’s Marlon Byrd money! I’m worth 1.5 then.

No Gutierrez, Sherlock!

i will go ahead & say

that a far better investment in the starting rotation would’ve had had been to give heilman a shot. dontrelle is burnt toast, imo…

by brian custer on Jun 1, 2010 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

Well

of course you would.

Just kidding, we <3 you.

by Wailord on Jun 1, 2010 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

not really sure why management does not see this

after all, wtf do we have to lose at this point? put dontrelle in the bp if aj wants him so badly….. :(

by brian custer on Jun 1, 2010 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Heilman

Is the only thing even remotely close to reliable right now in the bullpen. We need him there.

Wear your own fur.

by Marc Fournier on Jun 1, 2010 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

we’ve all heard that before… until he sux; then you all will crying to dfa him..

by brian custer on Jun 1, 2010 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

i guess so

that is baseball. fickleness as a hobby..

by brian custer on Jun 1, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Well two things

1. Heilman’s been pretty solid from the pen, why mess with that?
2. We ain’t payin’ s*** for Dontrelle

by Clefo on Jun 1, 2010 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

dontrelle has earned a trip to the bp

heilman has eaned a trip to the sp. why not let dontrelle go in the pen and heilman start?

by brian custer on Jun 1, 2010 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Again

I’m sure you’ve noticed how froompiecing awful our pen has been, Heilman has been Jesus amongst the lepers this season. Taking him out would just be a move that says “HEY PEN, FEEL FREE TO ASPIRE TO NEW LEVELS OF SUCK, THAT GUY WAS HOLDING YOU BACK!”

If there is something that is actually working, don’t mess with it, especially this season

I'm still not sure

what you’re trying to accomplish in saying this?

I don't know

And until he gets that apology from Jim, we may never find out.

checking Bless You Boys

Tiger fans seem mixed. Some are even saying BB is better the DW at this point.

Anyone who attempts to generate random numbers by deterministic means is, of course, living in a state of sin.

Well,

they should also remember that the league switch is going to help D-Train’s numbers and hurt Buckner’s.

As I Say "Meh"

A mediocre, small change, trade. Buckner wasn’t working; big surprise. To succeed with his weak “stuff”, you have to pitch like Gaylord Perry/Greg Maddux. Not happening here.
Willis has good “stuff”, but he has had some problems with his relationship with the strike zone. In fact, they had a breakup a few years ago. If Dontrelle could find his beloved strike, it could be a decent trade.
Or it might mean nothing.

i still don't see

how any of this matters if we don’t have a bullpen…..we’re not contending….

by blue bulldog on Jun 2, 2010 2:23 AM EDT up reply actions

haha the tigers response about buckner is

Buckner was 0-3 with an 11.08 ERA in three starts, which Dombrowski said were

"not good,"
for Arizona this season. The 26-year-old righty has spent four years in the majors, going 4-6 with a 6.40 ERA in 13 starts last season for the Diamondbacks.

He started the season at Triple-A Reno after failing to win a spot in the rotation this spring and failed to take advantage of a recent opportunity to pitch for Arizona.

"He gives us depth at Toledo," Dombrowski said.

ouch.

by blank_38 on Jun 2, 2010 2:29 AM EDT reply actions

Well,

given that both Dontrelle Willis and Max Scherzer have also pitched for Toledo this season, that’s not an awful place to be “depth”.

Maybe

But since they’re effectively paying $8 million for him to be depth at Toledo this year….

Well..

We still suck, but I love this. I hope he can pitch CG’s! haha.
