SnakeBytes May 6, 2010: Houston, we have a problem.
So now that I've given us the requisite NASA pun for the day...links!
Recaps and Previews
- [dbacks.com] D-backs beaten on Lee's walk-off homer
"To start off with a leadoff walk is dangerous, and they reminded us why. The walk didn't cause the homerun, but it certainly gave them some momentum. And Lee didn't miss the first pitch, as you saw." - [miamiheald.com] Arizona Diamondbacks (13-15) at Houston Astros (9-18), 8:05 p.m.
"We were trying to go away, but it was up and in the middle, Gutierrez said of the final pitch. "I made a mistake and paid for it."
Team and Player News
- [khou.com] Houston products making it big with Arizona Diamondbacks
Spring Woods High School product Chris Snyder and Bellaire High graduate Chris Young both grew up in Houston and love playing here. Snyder connected on a big 3-run homer on Monday night and Young, well, he's hitting over .400 in 7 games played at Minute Maid Park. - [dbacks.om] D-backs respond to Howell's approach
"I'm trying to get them to think, 'I own that plate. Until they come with the right speed and the right location, I'm not going to budge, and when they do, I'm going to let them know I'm there,'" - [visaliatimesdelta.com] Ryan Wheeler powers Visalia Rawhide to win over Bakersfield Blaze and back into first in California League's North Division
"We haven't been hitting all that well of late, especially on the road and the first game of this series, but our pitching has been carrying us and Miley kept that going." - [azcentral.com] Arizona Diamondbacks' Kirk Gibson remembers Ernie Harwell
"I said, 'Well, Ernie, we got thrown a little curveball there,'" Gibson said. "He said, 'Yeah, Gibby, but three million people in China didn't even see it.'"
- [yahoo!] After being cut by M's, Eric Byrnes joins beer league softball team
Byrnes tells Gilbert that he thinks his playing days are probably over and his stat line of .094/.237/.156 with zero homers and zero RBI over 15 games with Seattle backs that up. - [cbssports.com] Bullpen bails out unbeaten Zito as Giants edge Marlins
Good article about Tim Lincecum being 5-0 with a 1.49 ERA, though for some reason they keep misspelling his name as "Barry Zito". Seems kinda unprofessional, but whatever. - [mediaite.com]"Los Suns": How Sports, Politics And Media Got Wonderfully Mixed-Up With Immigration
Worth a read. No real opinion on the law itself, just a look at how it's affected sports and fans since SB1070 was passed. - Could (should) Bud Selig move the MLB All-Star Game? - Inhistoric
Could he? Yes. Should he? Everyone in Arizona says hell no.

Hmph
Darn automatic formatting. Got rid of some of my underscores and made them italics? (the initial declaration of numberposters should be “number_posters”

But
which Adrian Peterson? The good one, or the one Chicago drafted THINKING they were getting the good one?

Seriously?
That happened?

Well, no,
but Chicago DID draft another RB Adrian Peterson who wasn’t as good as THE Adrian Peterson.

Re: Howell
I dunno how much of it is natural maturing by our hitters, and how much of it is Jack, but he’s got some pretty nice numbers to put on his resume so far.
I’ve been wondering about that, since KJ seemed to be gushing about him. (While trying very carefully not to put down Pendleton)
ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO KELLY JOHNSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course,
with the exception of guys like KJ and LaRoche, it could also have something to do with the fact that Howell already knows these guys’ tendencies from the minors.

He's back very soon.
Although Parra has actually outhit him this season. (67 OPS+ vs. 69 OPS+)

Suck with options or suck without options
Who do you send down?

Gillespie
I think Cole goes down to play every day in AAA. Ryal is starting in LF tonight against a LHP, instead of Gillespie.
I send definitely Parra down
Ryal isn’t a guy you want to get consistent starts in LF. You want him at 1B or 2B ideally, with the occasional LF/RF game. Plus Gillespie is actually hitting well… .803 OPS?

Did you hear Eric Byrnes is writing a book?
It's going to be a pop-up book.

I have to say
I’m a little disappointed that EJ misses the Astros… A futile offense like theirs would have been great for him, I think. Instead he has to go up against the Brewers tomorrow. I really hope he throws well, I’d like to see his numbers start regressing at some point.

It's a good thought,
so let’s hope that, instead, he turns around against a major league team.

Five Numbers:

Despite what they seem to think, the Giants are INEVITABLY going to regress. Not only is their pitching good but not THIS good, but Mark DeRosa is their only starter without an OPS+ above 100. How long do you think that can continue??
I mean, Jebus… even the reanimated corpse of Edgar Renteria has an OPS+ of 102.

I knew
Upton was gonna get a strike 3 called on that low outside pitch.

Yeah thats pretty funny but also a bit cool.
He wants to be traded so he can help his team out. Pretty classy if you ask me.
I hear voices in my head They council me They understand They talk to me.
Well,
or he wants to be traded to a team that’s actually competitive…
ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO KELLY JOHNSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think the problem is him not trying.
I think it’s more a question of… being fat and old.
