The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed right-handed pitcher Luis Ayala to a minor league contract, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Josh Byrnes. Ayala, 32, is 29-39 with a 3.67 ERA (159 ER in 390.1 IP) and a .276 opponents average with 92 walks and 255 strikeouts in parts of six Major League seasons, ranking eighth among big league relievers with a 2.12 walks-per-9.0 innings ratio during that span. Between the Minnesota Twins and Florida Marlins in 2009, he had a combined 1-5 record with a 5.63 ERA (25 ER in 40.0 IP), 14 walks and 28 strikeouts. Ayala was 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA (7 ER in 14.0 IP) and a .259 opponents average, 7 walks and 10 strikeouts in 14 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque this season.
