Gerardo Parra brought back up; Cole Gillespie returning to Reno
Just thought I would pass along the news I just received via KTAR text: Gerardo Parra has been called back up and Cole Gillespie is on his way back to Reno...so for the poster here who wanted Parra back, you are getting your wish. I like Gillespie and I also like Parra. I am sure Cole will be back eventually...if not soon, then at least for September call-ups, along with Ryan Roberts, whom I miss dearly!

Where did
the “Thor” nickname come from, btw? I must’ve missed it in one of the recent GDTs.

So i just started calling him Thor.

There is God. Busy cleaning the house today but popping on the net every once in awhile. Our losing streak began when he was sent down (well ok one game after according to the guy that ran into his gas line drunk). He is my favorite player and is very solid. You just made my day Mrs. Rock with hearing this news. D’Back fans, get ready for a run (winning) that we’ve all been ever so patiently waiting for. Thanks for some long awaited good news. Now ship Conner the ____ outta here and let Parra be the everyday starter.
Woah there dude.
Phil was not drunk he even said so You probably weren’t around when he talked about voluntarily putting a breathalyzer in his car. So I suggest you just step off because quite frankly i’m tired of you harassing users around here. First its me now its Skins.

I know...
We are all just armchair managers and GMs really, if you think about it. We second guess a lot of the time and other times we hit it right on the head with our predictions.
I wish Cole the very best. In the meantime, I am looking forward to more of those dive catches Gerardo makes :)

I think Cole will be solid
I just think right now fringing on the worst record in all of baseball, we go to players that produced. In my opinion, Parra is a very solid at bat, and if played everyday could be one of the best in the game. Others may disagree as we are all human, but that’s my thought.

Parra
had nothing to do with the losing streak… just because a guy happens to strike out 3x everyday we win and doesn’t play when we lose does NOT mean it has anything to do with each other.
Heck, it was just nice getting some production from LF… but I guess that’s all over now.

If Parra plays tonight
Watch how he brings ‘umpff’ to the team. He is a leader and doesn’t just go up there and do nothing. This guy in my opinion is, well I cant curse on here but the s&^t.
I haven't noticed GP
being a leader AT ALL, especially after seeing him pull a Hanley Ramirez on numerous occasions in Spring Training…

His offense is another story?
What changes would you suggest for this team since you obviously disagree with bringing Parra back. You will see if he plays tonight what he brings to this team. He brings consistency and confidence to others on the team. I bet we win tonight if he is in the lineup.
The only way he's brought consistency and confidence to others this season
is that he’s consistently sucked. Christ, dude. His OPS+ is 58 — that means that, even playing in a hitter-friendly home park, he’s hitting nearly 50% worse than league average.
Sure, he’ll consistently strike out on balls out of the zone. Sure, he’ll consistently not take a walk. (16 Ks and only 2 freaking BBs in 75 PAs this season) Sure, he’ll give confidence to everyone else because, well, at least they’re not hitting as badly as Gerardo Parra.
And remember — this is almost ENTIRELY against RHPs. He can’t hit lefties for shit. These are his numbers against the guys he’s supposed to do well against.

34% Out-of-Zone Swing Rate
Yup, Parra has swung at 34% of pitches outside of the strike zone, which is by far the worst among the regulars. No one else is over 27%,
Who's at 27%?
CY?
Letting our bullpen pitch is like playing Russian Roulette...

So CY’s O-swing is that good? He HAS looked so much more disciplined this year — he was just a guess hitter for much of last season.

True, yeah,
about how he was getting a TON of called 1st and 2nd strikes leading to swinging 3rd strikes.

by LoveMyDbacks on May 19, 2010 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions
My solution to what? The roster?
Well, I don’t really see a problem with our roster right now, so… leave Parra in Reno and tell him to learn to freaking hit lefties. When he’s got, say, an OPS above .700 against them, depending on how the big league roster’s doing, Cole might be slumping by that point, so THEN you switch them. But you DON’T send Cole down for GP just because LaRoche might not be able to play and you want a lefty off the bench — GP can’t hit righties so far this season, so what’s the point of valuing him as a lefty?
