Group forms to torpedo Cubs spring home + Cubs Beaten In Spring Attendance
No, they don't mean us, surprisingly. "A group is emerging to defeat Mesa’s efforts for a new Chicago Cubs spring training complex. The opponents say they plan to mount a campaign against a November election when Mesa voters will consider the $84 million complex. The group was founded by Bob Kammrath, a longtime commercial real estate adviser who has done hundreds of feasibility studies on developments, and retired engineer Chuck Daggs. The northeast Mesa residents call their organization the Mesa Taxpayers Alliance."
I particularly liked this quote. "What it all boils down to is something less than a Wal-Mart store. Would you lay out $100 million or more for the next Wal-Mart?" Exactly. Here's a link to the group's website.
UPDATE The Giants outdrew the Cubs in Cactus League attendance this year. "The San Francisco Giants led the league in attendance this year with 155,819 in 15 games at Scottsdale Stadium, just 3,326 spectators more than the Cubs attracted in 14 games." I guess the "engine-room" sputtered a bit this year. Pretty much nails the lie the Cubs are the only draw in town.

This

Okay, let's collectively cut off our noses
because our collective faces suck. This is not a good thing for Spring baseball fans. Yes, the Cub’s management are using strong arm tactics and undeservedly want preferential treatment, but like or not, these guys are also going to use strong arm tactics that will further poison the well – and baseball fans will ultimately be the losers.
Please!
The cubbies and their sorry fans just ain’t that special.

I'm
not sure how baseball fans in general will be the loser if the Cubs leave town. They don’t make baseball better here, and the revenue from Spring Training is a drop in the bucket for payroll. As fans have showed this Cactus League season, non-Cubs fans are more than capable of filling the seats. So if the Cubs aren’t adding that much more to attendance as away fans, then what exactly are they contributing to the other teams?
The argument is more effective if we frame it as Mesa being the losers.

well said.
phunny how Al on the cubbies site mentions attendance in every single re-cap of games this ST… I went to 6 ST games during spring break, 4 of them were sold out and none of them involved the cubbies

It's also
an odd obsession Cubs fans seem to have. White Sox fans in the city often have to be regaled of what amounts to attendance championships, nevermind the White Sox have had more real success.

Let them
come up with a solution AFTER the cubbies leave. If they (the cubbies) think they can dictate to Arizona, then they are poor students of history. Especially when Spring Training is for 30 days.
There’s been talk of using special taxing districts and using those would also help out the Coyotes.

There's nothing wrong with the Cubs current stadium
There’s no reason why we should pay for a new one just because they’re jealous of the set-up that the White Sox have across town. And when you get down to it, that’s a really huge part of why they want a new stadium.
This “deal” was set up when they had Mesa over the barrel and thinking that the Cubs already had their foot out the door. But their attempts to do anything with Naples has completely collapsed. Now’s the time for Mesa to shut this down and go back to the negotiating table, when things are more equal, and come up with a deal that’s more fair for everyone involved.

Personally, I'm still
hoping like mad they just move outta here. That may not come to pass, but hope springs eternal this time of year

You know what's wrong?
They have to travel like 500 miles to get to their training room. It’s like practically on the moon. Basically it’s either build a new complex or pay $Texas for a rocket for them.

Plus
The moon gravity really plays havoc with their pitches. Sinkers don’t sink right.

Wow
The Giants? I would have expected the Dodgers, but good for San Francisco.
I’m not too surprised to see the Reds and Indians were lowest- new location, and it’s out on the fringes of the valley. Hopefully attendance will pick up, it’s a nice park out there.
"Do we hug?" "I think we're too manly."
Lies!
The Giants filled their stands with prostitutes and children!

Who replace the prostitutes with drunks?

Cubs suck, but I think the numbers are incorrect
I have seen this in a couple of places, this is from
http://www.evliving.com/2010/04/02/cubs-spring-training-ends/
The Chicago Cubs wrap up their 2010 spring training season with 14 wins, 10 losses, and 3 ties. Despite the one rain out game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Cubs were still able to lead the Cactus League in attendance with an average of 10,892 fans. The Cubs also broke their own record of largest attended game at Hohokam Stadium against the San Diego Padres with 13,462 fans.
written by Dan Bickley?
I’ve seen other stories to the contrary. But, if the attendance trophy is what matters most to the cubbies instead of the one that has eluded them for 102 years now, more power to them…

Different measure
Giants had the highest total attendance, Cubs had the highest per-game attendance.

Also
This line: “The Cubs also broke their own record of largest attended game at Hohokam Stadium against the San Diego Padres with 13,462 fans.”
Well, who else is going to be setting records in Hohokam Park? The AZCentral article just reports that as “a record” number of fans, without specifying the stadium, which is pretty disingenuous since it wasn’t a Cactus League record.
"Do we hug?" "I think we're too manly."
I set
my own record at Hohokam Stadium once. 10 Hostess cupcakes in 5 minutes.

I'm skeptical that it would be a record
Have you seen Carlos Zambrano?

It
was a personal record. Anyways, Maricopa County should now build me a Hostess cupcake eating stadium.

Or what
You’ll take your cupcake eating to Florida? You wouldn’t even know how to eat a cupcake in that humidity!

Fair enough
I think the Snakepit is ready for the season to start.

Florida, Ha Ha
I hope the Cubs move to Florida… They would be miserable there. Heard Nomar talking on ESPN a few days ago and he said that the shortest distance between stadiums in Florida is the same distance as the ‘dreaded’ Tucson road game WAS in the Cactus league.
He said when he came over from the Grapefruit League he gladly made that Tucson trip in exchange for an extra day off.
Hah!
Good for Nomah.
