Cubs New Spring Training Complex Update: BCB Interview With Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall
After his interview with the Mesa mayor, I suggested Al speak to Derrick Hall to get the other side of the argument. Our president kindly agreed to do so, and the results can be found at the above link. In an email to me (which I don't think he'll mind me quoting), Al said "I think, in the end, a deal will be made that will be satisfactory to everyone involved: the Cubs, the city of Mesa, Maricopa County, the state of Arizona, and the other 14 teams in the Cactus League. What form that deal will take -- too early to tell." Tend to agree with that; certainly hope so

I hope so, too.
Although it’s fun to get rough and rowdy with the Cubs and their fans, they have long been a loyal part of the Valley and have provided much mirth and merriment.
Could not possibly
disagree more.

I actually agree with NASCARbernet.
(Which doesn’t happen too often)
The Cubs ARE right that it’s good for the Cactus League to have ’em here. And good for the Valley and the state.

I still strongly disagree
I’m sorry, but I have bigger aspirations in life than to be a dishwasher, bellboy, or a maid in the hospitality industry, so I am not buying that having ‘them’ here is good for me in any stretch of the imagination!
And if it does, then we are so royally screwed 8 times till Tuesday. This valley has much bigger issues if it cannot survive without 30 days of ST from the cubbies.
I do not want them here, I will not welcome them. end of line.
I really cannot be any clearer on this.

Don't confuse the two issues
“Good for Arizona” and “Good for the Cactus League” aren’t the same thing.

However
I did pick up the fact that the attendance was only 3,141 today. While I realize it was a chilly Monday, it kind of makes me think the D’Backs can’t move their Spring Training HQ to Scottsdale soon enough.
Rain
Naw, it was the rain that caused such a low attendance. I actually doubt there were 3100 there. It rained most of Sunday and quite some Monday morning (depending where you were in town); including on and off from 11am right up till 1 pm. I was surprised they got it started on time.
Last year the Cleveland game (also on a weekday) had rather good attendance (this is just from my memory of the crowd though).
That said, I wonder how attendance will be this year in Tucson. Some are probably thinking, “Last year to see them locally, need to get out to the park.” Although others might be thinking more along the lines of, “Since you are leaving, well later.”
I still think its too bad the Dbacks are leaving Tucson. I think for the most part Tucson treated them well (except the local politicians of course). Just my 2 cents. I hope to go see a few more games still this month.
My mom met Derek Hall and Josh Byrnes

Hasn't it been raining and cold
in Phoenix, too? Yesterday was a miserable, non-stop drizzly day

Jim's comments re: a deal
The problem is that the MOU created a deadline of July 12th for legislation to get passed or else the MOU is invalidated.
The Mayor and the Speaker have made it clear they will fight for this plan and by the time they accept that they are backing a loser and things go back to square one in terms of scratching around for a deal that will work…it is likely time will have run out.
Cubs should find
their own funding. Dont tax our tickets brah.
Cubs fans are fun to mess with/run off the road.
Steam Rollin' Cub's fans like an 18 wheeler with a drunk driver driving. There's no survivin'.
I think if there isn't a settlement
Bud will big foot their understanding with Mesa AND prevent them from moving. In which case they lose big time.

That
would be hilarious. I’d personally go to Milwaukee and kiss his statue outside Miller Park.
All targets neutralized. Program completed. By your command.
I hope so!

Best line over there at BCB:
“the Cubs are the premiere draw in the Cactus League and deserve to be treated as such”
What I’ll say when my BCB membership kicks in: “They do, they earn more money than everybody else in the Cactus League”.
Someone needs to explain to these jokers that the economic incentives are such that the Cubs stadium matters more to the Cubs and the Cubbie fans (who overwhelmingly want to stay in AZ) than to the rest of the Cactus League.

It's probably not worth the effort
Most of them over there are convinced that we owe them a new stadium, and nothing is going to change their mind.

Maybe when July 12th
comes and go with no agreement of any kind, then it might sink in.
My offer still stands to help them pack and move to Naples. I’ll be the person driving the U-Haul grinning from ear to ear the whole way too.
It’s sunny and 78º for tomorrow. We’ll be lucky to get above 60º

Car & hotel taxes
So, Mesa is trying to sell the phantom “car & hotel tax” funding to people up North, huh? Yeah, the Pima County Supervisors danced to that tune and TE Park ended up draining money from the general fund. This is why I was 150% in favor of not letting ST and billionaire owners hold Tucson hostage in the way that Mesa is so hot to be held. There are more important things to do with my f’ing tax money than build and endlessly renovate baseball stadiums. It’s also why I’ll be damned if I’ll travel the 100 miles and spend money on ever seeing the D’Backs play in Phoenix. They were part and parcel of that fleecing, and then did a cut-and-run after they’d drained our tax revenues as much as they could. I’ll watch them on TV, but only because I don’t have Nielsen box in my house; doesn’t matter what I watch, because it doesn’t make money for anyone.
How did you feel
about Slim-Fast taking all that Pima County money and then high tailing it out of town as soon as the incentives ran out?
I really think the D’Backs would’ve stayed in Tucson if the White Sox hadn’t bolted. I think it is the Sox you should be mad at.
but, but, it's Mesa!!
Check Cashing stores on every corner, and a brand new Wal*mart at Riverview (the place they voted to give tax breaks so Pro Bass will build there)
Mesa, home of legislators who think the best way to fix this state is to cut education to the bone and beyond!!! (I wonder if it is because most of them didn’t get past 8th grade?)
Mesa-making Mississippi look good!
