Writers and recappers report... NOW WITH SCHEDULE!!!

PrintYep, time to get to work on the schedule for the 2010 season, seeing as we are now less than three weeks from Opening Day. What I'd like from the editors and authors, is an idea of their schedules and general recap availability - evenings that are best for them, impossible for them, and a vague idea of how many games a month they can be relied upon to cover. I'd rather people err on the side of caution there - you can always opt in for more games, which would be greeted with delight here. I still want to keep on with the 'Guest Recap' slot we had last year, where the first Sunday of each month is open to anyone who wants a shot. But beyond that, everything is open, and basically, the more voices we can have here, the better!
Based on what people said, I've now put together a draft schedule. This was based on: Azreous every Wednesday; Sprankton every other Tuesday; 'Charmer every other Friday; Sundays being a monthly rotation of Guest Slot, 'Skins, Soco, Kishi and either Zephon or IHSB for the rare fifth weeks. Let me know any changed needed, desired or wanted. We are still, I believe, looking to try and fill some of the first week when I'm away, especially the weekend, so offers for that - either from the writers, or promising new rookies, would be welcome.

Until the first week of May, most of my Tuesdays and Thursdays are dead between work and school.
During the summer, I plan to take a summer class Monday – Thursday at nights.
After that, though, I get my schedule appx a month before hand, so I can always be “mop-up” duty. I also have tickets for 6 games already lined up, so I can certainly do recaps for any of those games.
All targets neutralized. Program completed. By your command.
I'm here, of course :)
My usual Saturday mornings are taken, and I’ll have a few weekends of tournaments, but other than that, y’know, I don’t really have much going on. :P I can do once a week or once every other week if free! Plus the SF games, whenever they are…. uh, suppose I should start getting tickets, huh….

My work sked will be slightly sketchier than last year, when I was simply working Mon-Thurs. I’m working Weds and Thurs for sure all year, but may need to work some Fris and Sats and even Suns as well. if possible. I only work one of every three Wednesdays, and since the newspaper is always an evening thing, that’s the easiest way to guarantee I can keep these up. Because I know everyone would be so disappointed.

Tom Wilhelmsen to Seattle and Dustin Yount to LAD. Wilhelmsen wore #22 and has a Byrnes-esque hairstyle. Yount is the son of Robin Yount. Dustin has lead hands at 1B. I recall a game where, in the same inning, he dropped two pretty easy picks at first. (one was charged an error on 3B, but I really disagreed with that)

After last years exile, a regular working pattern means that I’ll be able to watch a lot more games this year.
So if there is a recap spot or two I’d love to give it a go.
i’m toying with the idea of doing fancast again, it’s still just a case of setting up the equipment I need and finally sorting out Skype :D but if anyone wants to volunteer and give it a go, having 2+ people working on it would make it a lot easier.
Oh and I’ll be shamelessly trying to get D-Backs news onto Sky Sports News here in the UK as well, mwah ha ha ha.

First week of the season
Forgot to mention that we’ll be in Scotland for the first week of the season. Fly out on Opening Day [hopefully,after the game is over!] and come back the following Monday. We will need recappers for all those games, since I sincerely doubt my town has wifi. I think electricity only arrived there fairly recently, after the first few people to try installing it, ended up getting rolled down hills inside barrels with spikes.
Anyway, may be best to leave ’charmer and ’Skins to arrange that week on the fly, but just so everyone knows!

FYI I’m good for most of those games, probably, if you can’t line up enough spot starts that week. But I’m going to Santa Barbara on the 9th-11th, so ‘skins will get the weekend. (Unless ’skins makes other plans…..) But I’ll have someone else secretly keep him in line. Any volunteers?

I looked at the schedule: Jim’s doing Monday, there’s a Tuesday and Wednesday game at 6pm, then Friday-Saturday-Sunday. I can do Tuesday, if Azreuous is good for that Wednesday. You can take one or two of the weekend days, and we can assign someone else the other?
The next Monday is an off day. Which sucks, because if they were playing the Dodgers on MONDAY instead of TUESDAY I could GO TO TO THE GAME…….. /bitter

It’s radio only for Arizona folks…. It might be on MLB EI but since it’s listed as San Diego’s “Ch 4”, I doubt it. Looks like that’ll be radio only for all of us.

Not really a problem.
Baseball is one of those games that’s very structurally strict, so it’s not too difficult to recap it using only the radio broadcast.

It's pretty simple
You just do a Fanpost – you needn’t worry about the fangraph or rollcall, one of the editors can add those when they promote it to the front page.
Beyond that, there’s not much in the way of style guidelines. We’ve had serious recaps, silly ones, stats-filled ones and descriptive, lyrical ones. Heck, do it in a series of rhyming couplets if you want. It’s all about your voice. About the only thing is the subject has the score and an appropriate headline, ‘cos that’s what’ll end up on Yahoo, etc.
