MLB NETWORK - WTF ?!?!?!?

I just wasted an hour of my life watching the 75 Greatest Catches in Baseball History and there was not ONE SINGLE Diamondback on that list?? Oh really?? What about Mark Reynolds, Gerardo Parra, or Justin Upton, Steve Finley.  ALL of these guys have made significant contributions to the game with fantastic catches. But NO. Ken Griffey Jr, Mookie Wilson, Torii Hunter, Jim Edmunds all get multiple mentions with less fabulous catches than some of the Diamondbacks.

Not a SINGLE one was mentioned, with the exception of Luis Gonzalez being robbed of a home run when he played for Detroit, and Randy Johnson with Seattle. What the hell MLB NETWORK?????????? The franchise team with the shortest amount of time getting to a World Series and winning it, had quite a few memorable catching moments in their 10 years.

I'm gonna make Jim make a "Best Of" specific to the Diamondbacks in a lot of areas. So, a great big raspberry to you MLB NETWORK, that was not a fair and balanced list. I won't be watching the rest of your stupid lists. Thank you very much.  This rant is over.

The one that pops into my mind first is

that amazing catch in right field by Jeff Salazar to rob a home run where he climbed the fence.

And the second one I think of is the Chris Young one in San Diego to save the game in the bottom of the 9th.

In the end it was us who was robbed.

It's not enough to just live, you gotta live for something.

My favourite catch of all time ;)

I was watching the show

And, certainly, we had a number of entries which were likely as good as anything there. It did seem there was a certain degree of favoritism there: Derek Jeter diving into the stands was included, but Mark Reynolds doing much the same? Nah.

Now, obviously, the D-backs have only been about for a dozen or so years, but the show was heavily biased towards the modern era. Which was part of the problem to begin with: the title should probably have been something like “The best catches at games which happened to be televised”.

Of course, the #1 was Willie Mays’ over the shoulder catch at the Polo Grounds. Really, it was pretty meh, in comparison to some of the others. I think these kinds of shows are largely an exercise in catering to preconceived opinions, not challenging them.

Well Stated

and completely on the money, imo.

When it comes to things like great catches, it is amazing how much the bar has been raised over the years.

Of course, you have to factor in that very few games were televised back in the day when Willie Mays made his catch in the 1954 World Series, but it is hard to escape the conclusion that similar historic and famous catches such as Al Gionfriddo’s in the 1947 World Series, Sandy Amoros’ in 1955, Mickey Mantle’s in Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956 (which he later called, “probably the best catch I ever made”) would generate little more than polite applause today.

The game has indeed changed, and the athleticism of it’s players has increased exponentially.

There was a great catch

Alex Romero had at Petco a year or two back. Bases loaded, Doug Davis pitching IIRC.

the best catch i remember

was the bases loaded alex romero catch with the game on the line in the 8th inning and jon rauch pitching

i can’t remember if it was petco or not

Found it

Retrosheet wins.

You’re right, Rauch had just come on in relief of Davis.

Looking at that line, it just says “Gerut flied to right”, but what a catch it was.

there's another one similar

Micah Owings vs Mike Cameron at PETCO.
Bases loaded, high fly to center, Young jumps, catches it and rob Cameron of a grand slam. Amazing.

Interesting

Not often you’ll see a pitcher in as a pinch runner, but Peavy was on the bases there for Josh Bard.

Double D

Just happened to be the pitcher who was pitching in the game Salazar made the aforementioned awesome catch in too. I can still remember the look on DD’s face when they showed his reaction to Jeff’s catch. It was one of a big smile and him lipping the word “WOW!”
