Hmm
I sorta had hope for Mercedes in the pen in the future. Why not DFA a guy like Mulvey or Rafael Rodriguez who have no futures?
Just a hunch
But Mercedes was terrible last year and it’s doubtful that someone picks him up and is willing to put him on their 40-man roster. So we’ll likely still retain control of him.
He’s a Double-A reliever who was terrible last year. I guess his spot on the team’s depth chart was lower than Mulvey’s.

Didn't Ryal already head to Japan?
Is this a belated move relating to that?

Guess the Japan thing didn't work out
so instead, it’s a release, and we are on the hook for his contract.

You sure?
A team isn’t required to keep its players on the 40-man for the three pre-arb years – it’s possible to non-tender a non-arbitration-eligible player.
I think it’s just a release, and we aren’t on the hook for his salary. After all, his contract for next year technically hadn’t been signed yet, right?

Still working on Japan deal
Towers said last week they are still negotiating Ryal’s deal to Japan. I don’t think the Diamondbacks are on the hook for anything for his contract. Even if they were, it was only $400K last year.
