No taxpayer money?
So is it privately financed? Why would a private financing need to go to the ballot measure (which I have not yet read)?
I got nothin'.
Read the link at BCB.
It explains the whole process. There is public money being used, but it is being raised by the sale of land, not by any tax increase.

I should have been clearer.
There IS “taxpayer money” involved, just no new tax dollars.

whoopsie!
the economic-development benefits of new stadiums and pro sports teams are almost zero
Let’s hope the people of mesa are smart enough to realize this too

This has
pretty much been economic common knowledge for years, but municipal authorities get so excited about sports facilities and cling to the outdated notion that they “pay for themselves”.
Mr. Science Boy
I would not be surtprised if Prop 420
goes down to defeat from comments I hear from Mesa voters. I’m glad they finally woke up

I'm still opposed
to public financing of private sports facilities, just on an economic basis, but I DO have to admit that I’m glad the Cubs are staying, (well, I guess… like they really had a choice, anyway??) and I’m glad they found a way to pay for it that doesn’t punish EVERYONE.

At first glance
It looks like everyone’s getting what they wanted, which is pretty sweet. I know this proposal initially ruffled a lot of feathers here in AZ, but I’d say people generally want the Cubs to stay and it seems they found a reasonable way to make it happen.
Thanks for the link, Al.
Good stuff. (Still hate your team, though)
Not gonna lie — it’s still excessively luxurious for a ST facility, especially one that only houses a single team.

No taxpayer money involved
Which implies a whole lot of things that aren’t actually true.

They are going to be across from my subdivision.
This does not make me happy. They will not be good neighbors re: parking.

"neighborhood" would have been a better word.
and my apartment complex doesn’t have numbered spaces. Welcome fat guys with Fukudome jerseys!

That was a rhetorical question. I don't really care what you say.

Kind of
I don’t work off Indian Bend anymore, I moved up to the Shea store, but I still pass it nearly every day. It’s only about 10 minutes from my house.

The D'backs
facility, I should specify, lest anyone think I support the Cubs.

More Welfare for Billionaires
Just because Mesa does not have to raise YOUR taxes (they are attempting to raise hotel taxes yet again) doesn’t mean it doesn’t cost you anything. The $84M is being raised by selling land that Mesa owns – we could use the $84M for ANYTHING (police, fire, schools, parks, tax reductions, WHATEVER). Your city will still be $84M poorer after the stadium is built.
Oh, and by the way, there is no contractual requirement for the Cubs to build anything resembling “wrigleyyville west” – that is all BS hype.
And yes, I am a lifelong baseball fan. But if they can’t build their own facilities here, I am more than happy to let Florida taxpayers build one for them.

Exactly
They may not be raising taxes for this, but if Mesa wanted to sell this land, they could spend that money on something more important. Just because you aren’t handing out cash for this specific project doesn’t mean it’s not costing you anything.
And last I heard, there still wasn’t much interest in Florida to lay out cash for a Cubs facility anyway…
