Eric Byrnes a Mariner

From Yahoo Sports:

The Mariners added a right-handed bat, agreeing to a one-year contract with outfielder Eric Byrnes(notes).

Byrnes, who will turn 34 on Feb. 16, was let loose two weeks ago by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona owed him $11 million from the final season of a $30 million contract, and any team could sign him for the $400,000 minimum, with the Diamondbacks responsible to for the remainder.

He a career .260 hitter with 189 doubles, 30 triples and 109 homers. Seattle general manager Jack Zderiencik said on Thursday the Mariners wanted to add a veteran, right-handed bat to their lineup.

Byrnes was hampered by injuries the past two seasons and hit just .226 in 84 games last year.

(From me:  No comment as yet from MarinerHouseWife, who has heard me and Kishi discuss Byrnes at great length.)

Great clip

But did EB just save the game with that error?

Perhaps someone remembers the instance, but it looks to me like AZ up by one run in the bottom of the 12th inning with a man on first? Does the error make it a ground rule double? Is the runner stopped at third? Did we just DFA one of the pre-eminent baseball minds of our time?!?

A. De Aza C. Qualls Double to LF (Line Drive to Deep LF Line); De Aza to 3B/Adv on E7 (throw)

So it was ruled a double, but the error let the batter advance to 3rd. De Aza led the inning off. Coghlin, the next batter, would single him home.
Justin Upton hit a 3 run HR the next half inning to make it 11-8.

Qualls, whom had been in it to close it before Byrnes error, got the win. Ironically, Jon Rauch got the save (and of course gave up a HR too)

So will he go in the Hall as a Mariner or Diamondback?

Nice strikeout!

+1. Now that’s some funny stuff.

That's hilarious.

Seattle seemed to be going in the right direction until now

It's not a bad move

For practically nothing, they’re gambling that he’s going to recover. If he doesn’t, they’ve only spent a few hundred thousand. If he does, it’s a great deal.

MarinerHouseWife's comment:

vie twitter — Eric Byrnes, interesting. If he really is healthy, this might be a great addition. Low risk. I like it.

For any team on a minimum salary

It’s a good move. It was just a bad move for us for $11M.

Tweet fron MarinerHouseWife

She is at the Mariner Fan Fest , and she says: “Byrnes is here!! Aww Byrnesie. We’re ready for your comeback.”

Kinda cool of him to go to Fan Fest, I think.

Well it is shocking

With how warm of a reception he would have no doubt received from our faithful and devoted fanbase.

… oh wait.

Give me a second, I can bring this back to Trent Oeltjen.

to be completely honest

though, there were A LOT more fans here than fell for his line of bullshit than were against him. He should have felt right at home.

Okay, I was going to post that I was, yet again, bummed to lose him but I am okay as long as he is taken care of. My boy. MY BOY.

I have to be a Mariner’s, Diamondbacks AND Brewer’s fan next year. Oy.

Yes, you can be assured of that

MarinerHouseWife said that he was charming; and she gave him our good wishes. So you know she’ll love him on our account as well as her own. She wanted to see Chone Figgins (I know. What?) and wasn’t able to, but said that Eric “totally made up for it.”
