DON'T SHOOT!
OW!
Can't you READ?
Look , I'm just here on a little informational survey.
I just self immolated myself at McC over what I thought was some untoward treatment of a poster there.
I posted the broom here. Yes , I understand the implications - regardless of my good natured intent the protagonistic identities cannot be ignored , I get that.
Now...what if an Arizona fan posted one? You throw out the opposing viewpoint angle , it can only be perceived as in support of the cause , right?
Not if you're superstitious. And apparently some people are , to a degree of getting ugly about it.
So what I'd like to know is...do you believe in jinxes?

Definitely science.
I’m not even angry. I’m being so sincere right now.

no such thing as jinxes
the amazing thing about these sports superstitions is that it allows us fans to be a part of the game. Do our actions ever actually affect anything? No chance. Does it make us feel more a part of a community and a team? Heavens yes.

Plus
It makes everything more ridiculous when you have something to blame. If someone posts a picture and you win, you put it on the picture and act as if you have a magical key to victory. If someone guarantees an inning of shutout relief and your team gives up two runs and loses the game, it’s easier to put it on them and lightens the mood a bit.

Actually,
it’s easier to just blame the 15 year old everytime we lose. (Although last year’s “designated jinx” was Turambar)

I was
banned from Chase Field for a time last season.
I still don’t know why.

Pfft
Those sound like the words of a man who knows he jinxed his team at some point.

Well , I was crucified for the "Medders in L.A." pix.
But I’d prefaced them with a warning not to leave him in too long (which almost happened again today , but was derailed by a falling Panda).
I put zero faith in the reality of those or any superstitions , and while I suppose you have to keep in mind the variety of levels of belief I don’t think today’s offender meant anything malicious. Certainly not the level of unmistakeable venom (whoops).
Now everybody’s backpedaling and spinning , and I’m just tired of it. I have MLB – TV , that’s really all I NEED to survive.
Well , the occasional field trip…
I appreciate the invitations , but I’ve been a Giant fan all my baseball – cognizant life. And while it definitely isn’t “just a Bonds thing” (but oh , how that helped!) that’s not something easy to shake off. (Or wash off…grind off…uninstall…)
Ya know...ignorance really IS bliss.

It's true
I once jinxed the Colts in a playoff game 2 years ago. The whole season I’d been wearing Peyton’s jersey with the same sleeveless shirt underneath it and then for the playoffs I changed the undershirt and wore a Marv Harrison jersey. He proceeded to fumble the ball (and the game) for the first time in nearly 10 seasons. Needless to say I went home in shame.

Well,
that could also be because Peyton Manning sucks in the playoffs.

check your facts before you speak :-)
his QB rating is one point lower than “Captain Clutch” Tom Brady in the playoffs.

3 points lower.
Brady = 88.0
Manning = 85.0
BUT…. Manning’s passer rating (not “QB rating”) is buoyed by a 101.2 against creampuff Wild Card opponents. His rating in conference championships is a gross 57.3. Brady’s lowest split is an 81.2 in the divisional round.

ah yes he's one point lower than Roelethslkjdsbioupfdskljurger (was going from memory)
I maintain a lot of that has to do with shoddy defense. Too often he’s forced to take gambles early in a game due to already being down. The imbalance of the Colts team tends to put more fault on the offense than it necessarily should. I feel for Peyton because its never he’s the reason the Colts are so good its he’s the reason the Colts choke in the playoffs every year. Either way its a team sport and the playoffs prove that over and over again to us Colts fans every year. Defense wins championships, just ask the 18-1 Patriots.
P.S.
I feel that somewhere in this post I have to acknowledge those numbers you posted above. They’ve been acknowledged. I refuse to comment.

even in the Super Bowl, the defense won it for them. Manning sucked.

that whole playoff
it was all defense. In Manning’s defense he was the better QB that night, in a hurricane. :-)

Well, yeah,
but being the better QB than Rex Grossman is like saying that Mark Reynolds is a better baseball player than me.

This is
probably a pretty good way of putting it, AJ.
We know it’s not real, but it helps us feel connected to the team. I know that from time to time when this issue has come up, I’ve said something like, “But we’re BASEBALL fans. EVERYTHING WE DO influences the outcome of the game.” (Tongue in cheek, of course)

Yes and no.
If there’s nothing to it, then it does indeed work to bring us together as a community.
But I’ve seen enough weird stuff happen – most obviously here, the strange powers of St. Penelope – to dismiss it entirely. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle basically says that the act of observation changes the behavior of the observed: I know this applies at the quantum level, but could something similar happen in the macro universe? So that by watching a baseball game we are changing it?
The way I figure it, if there’s no such thing as jinxes, s no harm is done by, say, not talking about a no-hitter in progress. On the other hand, if they do exist… I’ll err on the side of caution!

In all seriousness,
I think you’re right, victor, but I doubt any kind of impassioned plea will matter one way or the other, short of someone looking at their posts and saying “Maybe I did go a bit overboard there.” For the most part, some will still hold superstitions responsible for everything bad that happens in a baseball game, and others will simply bemoan their fate.

It's human nature
To want to think things we care about are within our control, in some way – regardless of whether or not they are. Even the less religious among us (and that’d be me) have no doubt offered up a prayer to the heavens during a sporting event – I know I did in Game Seven!

I hid the offending image – which unfortunately means all the comments in reply also vanish, and that’s a shame since there were some interesting points in the discussion thereafter both for and against.
This is how the system works. A civil discussion among the participants, not a person coming in from outside and shrieking at us…
