Vintage baseball, anyone?

The Diamondbacks may not be going to the playoffs, but that doesn't mean that there won't be any October baseball in Phoenix. (Just maybe not October 2009...) The Arizona Territories Vintage Base Ball League is kicking off their season October 17th at the Glendale Harvest Festival. Vintage baseball uses rules from anywhere from the 1860s to the 1890s. I went to see some games last year- I've got some pictures up here- and they're a lot of fun to watch. They're starting the games at 8 am on October 17th, and run until dusk, and it's being held over near University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale- the links above have more specific info. I'm probably going to stop by to take in a few games, so if anyone else is interested, drop a note and we'll have to hang out.

Totally

gonna grow a mustache for this. No joke, I’d love to play vintage base ball (though I think I’d prefer a more 1900-1920’s style, which doesn’t differ too much from the modern game beyond power pitching and hitting) but this will be just as fun.

Just a heads-up to anyone wanting to come to tailgate: we still have 4 packages of sausages from Soco-fest (24 dogs), so we could just bring that to grill up.

Pretty much

They’re using the rules from a couple decades later, I think, but it’s pretty similar. It’s a lot of fun to watch.

Like a Southwest ad

Games start at 9, which seems dreadfully early to me, so I’m planning to show up around 11, when the second game is scheduled to start.

Tailgating is off, because I didn’t realize at first about the whole festival going on, so I don’t suspect they’d be thrilled with us bringing in a grill and cooking- the website for the Festival says there will be food there, so that’s an option. It is $1 for admission.

There’s a map and address here- it’s just off the 101 in the West Valley near the Cardinals stadium.

Regrettably unable to attend this one

The work thing – since I’m taking Saturday off on the 31st for the AFL shindig, I can’t really justify taking this one off too. Shame, as I’d quite like to see it. Suspect it’ll be over by the time I get off work – and I’m going to the International Sci-Fi and Horror Film Festival in Tempe anyway. Do want to see this, and looking at their schedule, looks like they do also have some Sunday games scheduled, so that would be possible in due course.

I’ll be relying on kishi to keep ’skins in line and ensure he uses none of the phrases frowned upon in this 19th-century baseball document. [NSFW, language]

Oh, I'M fine.

I was helping my dad install a door in place of two windows, when a piece of glass we were carrying to the dumpster ruptured. I wasn’t even touched, but it sliced open Dad’s chest and arm, so I had to take him to the hospital.

For future reference, walking into the ER wearing a white T-shirt soaked in blood is a VERY good way to be seen immediately.

But I’m completely exhausted. I was working from 7:30 until 4:30 when the accident happened, then I was in the ER with him until 9, when my sister came to give him a ride home, and her bf and I went back to clean up the mess.

Back from 1860

And we had a pretty awesome time. Along with a couple of our other friends, we made it over to the game a bit after 11 to meet up with the socos- kudos to them for dedication to the task at hand, i.e., soco for not shaving for a month and mrssoco for not shaving him in his sleep. Watched some of the game between the Bisbee Bees and the Glendale Gophers, who were renamed the Newsies by us. Since I was a Senators fan last year, I decided to cheer for the Gophers, and was quickly not rewarded for my effort, as the Bees took an early lead in the top of the first, 1-0. However, after a brief stoppage of play in the middle of the second for a train to deposit a barbershop quartet on the field for a short performance, the Gophers started to hammer the Bees pitching, and the rout was on. At one point, I think they were up 11-1 or something.

One unfortunate flaw of the field, however, was a complete lack of shade other than the dugouts, so after a while, it just got to be too damn hot. We stuck it out for a while, but eventually we just gave up and made our way to have some lunch, so we missed the end of the game, unfortunately. But it was a lot of fun- points to the left fielder for the Bees for handling our mild heckling well- and I’m definitely going to be attending some more games this season.

On change from last year is that, instead of playing one game every week or two, they’ve got slates of four games scheduled, so it’s more likely to be worth your trouble if you’re making a bit of a drive. If anyone is interested in catching some games, I’m thinking about going to the games on November 14th in Glendale- I assume people wouldn’t want to drive out to Sun City West for it.

Awesome

As an aside, next time I’m printing up the rules to bring with me. If I had, we would have been prepared for this situation: ""Balls caught on the fly or one bounce by anybody (players from either team, spectators, etc.) are outs"

I retroactively apologize to the Bisbee Bees for our conduct after that play- my declaration of shenanigans was impertinent and inaccurate.

Because

You’re free to check the schedule, too, but I figured that Glendale is the more central location than Sun City or Gilbert for most of us, and since their field there is actually on a church property, I assume they’ll be playing their games on Saturdays.

Depends on the field

The one in Glendale is a lot of flat ground, but the Peoria and Sun City fields have bleachers, as I recall.
