Gameday Thread, #134: 9/2 vs. Dodgers

Arizona Diamondbacks at Los Angeles Dodgers, Sep 2, 2009 10:10 PM EDT

Ari_medium

Max Scherzer
RHP, 8-8, 4.26

lad_medium

Chad Billingsley
RHP, 12-8, 3.83

We reach the midpoint of a streak of 16 games without a day off, but I'll be riding the pine tonight, with Azreous taking over. It's probably for the best that we lost last night, as if we'd gone 6-for-6 with me behind the recap wheel, I would probably feel obliged to keep going. As is, no qualms about handing this off and enjoying an early night - 7:10pm starts, plus extra frames and/or pitching changes in the middle of an inning [we had four of the latter yesterday, in addition to the air traffic control delay], means I haven't get to bed much before the witching hour this series. Mrs. SnakePit will be pleased to see me, because by the time I made it last night, she was sawing logs.

As noted in my piece earlier today, Max Scherzer had a poor August, with the batters who weren't striking out against him getting a lot of hits, resulting in a freakishly high BABIP of .389 - Max's season figure is .332, and the NL average only .298. As a result, I wouldn't be surprised to see a rebound: starting tonight would be quite nice. We might need it, because the Diamondbacks haven't managed to score off Billingsley in the past couple of times we've seen him, covering 12.1 innings. Might Young (8-for-23 lifetime) and Drew (12-for-30) be looking forward to the contest?

Line-up

  1. Stephen Drew SS
  2. Gerardo Parra LF
  3. Justin Upton RF
  4. Mark Reynolds 3B
  5. Miguel Montero C
  6. Brandon Allen 1B
  7. Alex Romero CF
  8. Augie Ojeda 2B
  9. Max Scherzer P

Well, Drew, anyway. Despite a career line of .348/.444/.609 against Billingsley - that's a 1.053 OPS - Chris Young's stock has fallen so far that he is still sitting on the bench, Alex Romero taking his spot in center. The Diamondbacks also called up Bryan Augenstein, who'll be taking Garland's spot on the roster, though Billy Buckner will be replacing Garland in the rotation. I'll maybe pop my head round the door, but don't expect too much more input from me today.

Odd to see Augenstein up

When he’s going to be on the AFL roster…

Did the same with Scherzer last year

He missed time in the middle of the season, was back up in the major at the very end of August, pitched own the stretch, then played in the AFL. I imagine they want to make sure he get his innings in.

Well, getting in the innings makes sense

But Scherzer was definitely MLB-ready. Augenstein? I dono. I would think we could keep him in the minors to get those innings in against the right level of hitter.

Wow

Seeing as lately I’ve taken to looking up historical stats and such, figured I’d show everyone Pedro’s 2000 season… sure, everyone knows, but it’s still incredible. Copy and pasted, of course.

 18-6, 1.74 ERA, 284 K’s and 32 BB’s;

  • Not once — not once — did his ERA creep above 2.00;
  • Opponents hit .167/.213/.259;
  • Seven complete games
  • Struck out at least 10 hitters 15 times;
  • Struck out at least 15 hitters three times;
  • Adjusted ERA+ of 291.

Deriving value from era+ and IP is a pretty good formula, I think, and he’s right there. Not sure he’s the all time best, but certainly in the discussion and historically great

Cause soco is 6’3 and I am 5’5, I feel REALLY REALLY short when actually I am the tallest in my family besides my brother? (Which puts me at taller than my mom AND my dad,.

I think Augie is like two inches taller than me but I think of him as pocket sized!

Two reasons.

1. The new IE came out not too long ago, and there are some user interface differences that I actually prefer over Firefox.

2. Firefox saves open tabs when closed, so if my netbook isn’t going to be left on for like 3 days straight, I usually just use IE and save the saved Firefox tabs for a longer session.

Um....

Phoenix, proper, is the 5th most populous city in the United States, IIRC.

BUT the Phoenix Metropolitan Area is only the 15th or so largest TV market — 15th most populous metro area.

For example, the San Fernando Valley is part of the Los Angeles metro area, but if it were its own city, it would be in the top 10 in the US. The District of Columbia only has about 800k people w/in the confines of DC, but NoVA has something like 3 million, PG county in MD is huge, etc.

We are

a large market, but sporting “markets” are determined by how much a team is willing to spend (in conjunction with the size of the fanbase).

I dunno how many posters we have here, but many have come and gone. The regulars last year weren’t exactly the same the year before or this year. Then there’s the regular parade of people the come through and only read, or post once and leave.

Also

there was a time when we would go through two game threads a game, and TBLA would barely use one, but as both teams’ fortunes have turned, so have the posting. I’d say we still have an awfuly respectable presence considering the year we have and the normally fickle Arizona sporting fan.

Young population.

Something like 40% of the state of Arizona was born elsewhere. (Me, for example)

Many of those people take their old loyalties with them. You need a home-grown native fanbase to fill at least one generation. When I first moved here, I wasn’t really a baseball fan; if I had to choose a team, it would have been the Red Sox back then.

However, my Redskins loyalty has never been in question, which is why the Cardinals are my 2nd team. If I were to have kids in Arizona, would they be Cards fans? Possibly. ::shrug::

I actually ahve an awesome reason

for being a Dbacks fan. Basically, when I was around seven or eight, I knew nothing of sports or ESPN. My dad had always been a Cubs fan, so I subsequently was a "fan" as well. My mom was buying an embroidered Cubs shirt and asked me if I liked any other teams (of course I didn’t). I asked to see my options, and at the top of the dropdown box was Arizona (why I didn’t go for Anaheim, I do not know- still makes me wonder). I picked AZ and decided to get a book on the Dbacks at school. I read up on them and decided to watch games when they were on. After watching a few, I picked up on SportsCenter (and subsequently, ESPN). A few years down the road I picked up NFL and eventually NBA, and now I’m a sports buff. Pretty awesome, no? All started with a shirt… ;P

"More than usual"

implies that there is a knowable quantity of bandwagon fans at any given market, which there isn’t.

Arizona, like many newer markets certainly suffer from a certain degree of “Sports-ADD,” but the attendance over the years has been largely stable within relation to the other teams, and other teams (some very established markets) have gone through bigger swings in attendance.

You know how you get to Carnegie Hall, doncha? Practice.

Well

I just meant that some teams seem to have a noticeably bandwaggonish following and end up losing all support during a bad season… different sport, but the Steelers definitely seem like that to me, so I’d consider them to have a bunch of fairweather fans. I didn’t necessarily mean that there was a quantifiable number or anything, just something “historically noticeable”.

More than some people realize

I didnt link comparative attendance to suggest we have a more robust base than Boston. We dont. Clearly, we had variable advantages (the new stadium, more seats and we won more than they did over that span).

But often in these dialogues, a resigned, unsubstantiated consensus emerges (often among younger fans) that PHX a) is an unusually challenged market, of b) sucky fans, and c) cant draw like places llike Boston, NY, Cubs, etc.

It’s empirically not true.

by soco on Sep 3, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions

It doesnt surprise me or you

but I think it surprises some people-that we drew more than Boston. Not just over a six year span, where you average in our whopping 1998 draw, but we outdrew them every single year for six years.

I think if you were to ask newer Dback fans, for example, who came of age when Wright & Reyes led the Mets resurgence, if we could/should draw like the Mets, alot of them would tell you you’re crazy. Even before the new stadium. The Mets have been around for generations, they dont have fickle fans like us, we cant possibly compete with New York, it’ll take us forty years to draw like that and blah, blah, blah…

Fact is, we outdrew the Mets for seven consecutive years(1998-2004) – and they had a bigger stadium! New York has tons of fair weather fans. I’m not saying it’s easy or a particularly fair “fight” to compete with their market, but it’s not as daunting as some would have us believe. To consistently draw in the thirties, and more when Phoenix grabs flags. It’s been done, right before our eyes.

If the FO is the focus of anything, something is seriously wrong with the picture ! - unnamedDBacksfan 2/20/09
