Arizona Fall League get together?
The Diamondbacks' players will be on the Scottsdale Scorpions, and include Brandon Allen and Bryan Augenstein. After the success of SnakePitFest and Torospalooza, figured it might be fun to do something similar, and go see our boys [and possibly a few future All-Stars and Cy Young winners!]. The schedule for 2009 can be found here [PDF format], with games running October 13 through November 19th.
Looks like it'll be the October 31st game,

What?
No one wants to come out to Surprise? Why not?
Sounds like a good plan to me. It was fun last year to see the surprised look on people’s faces at someone tailgating an AFL game. =)
"I can't accept and won't concede that this is who we are..."
Nope!
Unless I can take Carefree Highway to get there.

Well
You can.
It’s just easier to get here via other routes.
"I can't accept and won't concede that this is who we are..."
Yeah, but c'mon, dude.
It’s Carefree Highway! I can drive it while listening to the Gordon Lightfoot song.

Hey, it could be the DBacks 2009 theme song.
As far as AFL get together, I’m in.
Surprise
I love Surprise Stadium and even though it’s a drive for me from Chandler I would still go, as the only time I have ever been to that stadium is for Rangers/Royals Fan Fest

Seriously though,

I think it would be a cool idea. Id be down for it, only thing is I wouldnt be able to drive I would have to carpool up there. Ill pitch in with a 20$ for gas or something.
Yeah,
I have no problem (AGAIN) driving up Tucsonans, if they’ll chip in a bit.

Construction?
The only construction that I know of is at the intersection of the 303 and Bell. From there to the 101 it’s crystal clear.

My job to Phoenix Muni: 7.6 miles

I am totally down for it!
I live inChandler and can take anyone who lives up here in the Valley if they need a ride. Keep me posted.
I went to a few AFL games last year with some friends and we enjoyed it. I went to a few also back the year Conor Jackson was in it.

I’m still down for driving, if I don’t have to pay for gas. If we find out we need more seat belts, we might be able to take katers’ car as well.

Jebus.
Why is EVERYTHING happening on the 24th?
My high school orchestra is playing with one of the groups we saw in Chicago (Barrage. Effin awesome), it’s my grandma’s 24th birthday, there are 2 other concerts I want to go to, and this.
Needless to say, I’ll be in California that night, so no dice.

I'm not averse to a date change
But it’s tough, with the AFL not playing on Sundays, and a limited selection of alternate dates. If we want to see our boys (in Scottsdale) play, could do the 17th or 31st at Peoria, both afternoon games [tailgate afterwards?]
It’s still open…

Looking like the 31st
It is a day game that one: so it’ll either be a tailgate breakfast or we can hang about afterwards.. Whatever your costumes would be, best make sure they are light and comfortable!

I'm in then for the 31st.
I plan on bringing the lil ones this time. God knows you gotta spend time with them every once in a while.

I read 12:35 on the website
Im sure I’m wrong though. I think we ought to tailgate before the game. That works better for me and the kids anyway. After the game they will be anxious to get home to get ready for the night.
Are we grilling ?
I laugh until my head comes off.
Yeah, 12:35 sounds right
I was, frankly, guessing. We’ll see what the Tucson crew think, but I wouldn’t mind an early jump on the day myself.

I think
I can probably speak for most of us when I say we’d likely prefer to tailgate afterwards on balance, even though that sorta defeats the purpose of tailgating, but we’re not even sure how many Tucsonans will be showing up, so don’t base it on us.
Unless you want Wes to cook, because Lord knows he’d probably make it a mean tailgate if you gave him the chance.

Burritos for those who can make the tailgate b4 the game and
bbq for those afterwards….or even a trip to chilis or some other fine establishment………
Just throwing out some ideas.
Papas con chorizo burritos are not expensive to make…..I could bring them if I get an exact count, high fives and maybe a buck or two……
I laugh until my head comes off.
Awww, c'mon.

You know how you get to Carnegie Hall, doncha? Practice.
Ok
The 24th AND the 31st are now open this end. Which one do people want to go for? I’m leaning towards the former, as there seems to be a lot of stuff on Halloween, and it’s also an evening game on the 24th.
However, in other news, the D-backs want to give us freebies to one of the other AFL games. Not, of course, either of the ones we’re talking about, but I’m not averse to seeing another contest! Here are the options. All are at Scottsdale, unless otherwise indicated:
Fri Oct 23, 6:35 vs Peoria Javelinas
Fri Oct 30, 6:35 vs Mesa Solar Sox
Sat Nov 7, 6:15 – Rising Stars Game at Surprise Stadium
Wed Nov 11 7:05 – vs Phoenix Desert Dogs
Wed Nov 18 6:35 – vs Mesa Solar Sox
Sat Nov 21 12:35 – AFL Championship Game
I kinda want to go to the last – the final pro-ball played in Arizona this year – but obviously don’t know if it’ll involve our boys. Thoughts, comments, etc. on a second AFL get-together…
"Win, or die" -- Marquise de Merteuil
Oooh
I vote for the one in Surprise, for obvious reasons. But the Championship game would be cool, too.
For the other game, I’m going to have to switch my vote back to the 24th. Our current Halloween plans have apparently expanded to the point that driving back to Peoria for a game at noon is unrealistic, unfortunately.
"I can't accept and won't concede that this is who we are..."
For the 24th,
I’ll be at the UA football game with family, and I don’t wanna miss that. So, the 31st… which, I suppose, means the 31st is the vote from the Tucsonans. (Unless katers wants to drive)

Hmmm....
that’s pretty cool of them. Well, like I said, I’m voting “no” on the 24th, “yes” on the 31st, and as for another game, I’ll wait and see how everyone feels. Again, if there’s interest, and I won’t have to pay for gas, I’ve got no problem driving everyone up again.
Posting 65 comments/day since June '07.
I can only do the 31st.
I’ll be in DC for a wedding and Gallaudet’s homecoming on the weekend of 24th.
We could take my car if Phil want to give Ruby a break or isn’t feeling up to drive. I don’t care either way.

Hmmm....
that has yet to be decided.
If we do, will soco bring the sausages?
I don't think this has ever happened before. The Redskins suck, yet the (Arizona) Cardinals and (University of Arizona) Wildcats don't.

They'd better be pre-cooked
Unless you want them grilled on the SnakePitMobile radiator, with a side of Castrol GTX sauce…

I think
most shrink-wrapped sausages are pre-cooked these days.
If not, my valve cover has a perfectly-shaped groove for the plug wires.

That works out.
I have to work from 1-8, so I wouldn’t have been able to go anyway…and this way, Wes isn’t home bored while I’m at work. :-P

You mean Justin?
Since he’s been talking about it since the beginning?

Oh, that’s right. He did.
I was talking about me. :-P
we're like a borg ship; resistance is futile-- soco via twitter.
Well I think you both have my cellphone number so call me with details lol. What day did we decide on? The 31st right? Where do you want to meet up in Tucson, The Tucson Mall?
I don't have your # anymore, I forgot to save it.
Txt or call me with it.

I won't be able to make it...
Due to a Halloween get together at a friend’s house coinciding that day, but if anything changes, I will let you all know via post in here
"AUGIE AUGIE AUGIE...OY OY OY!"
No tailgating it is
In the absence of any apparent interest, there’ll be no tailgating tomorrow. [I’ll be having tortilla wraps for dinner!] We’ll be at the main gate at about 12:20pm; failing that, we’ll be inside, as close to the Scottsdale Scorpions on-deck circle as we can get.
See you there!

I believe Wes
has promised us tailgating on the drive up. :-D

So we're sure this is in Goodyear, right?
Rather than in Peoria?
I don't think this has ever happened before. The Redskins suck, yet the (Arizona) Cardinals and (University of Arizona) Wildcats don't.
Because
Goodyear sure as Hell isn’t listed in the Stadiums….

Well, the city of Goodyer
Is giving away tickets to it. Natalie Niekro is also scheduled to throw out the first pitch, as part of Aneurysm Awareness Week. So if it’s not at Goodyear, there’s going to be peeved people.

the Fall League will utilize the two newest spring-training venues for two games this season.
• Camelback Ranch-Glandale, spring home of the Dodgers/White Sox (one Peoria Saguaros home game), Nov. 14
• Goodyear Stadium, spring home of the Indians/Reds (one Peoria Javelinas home game), Oct. 31

I have
no idea who Natalie Niekro is.
But I’m glad it’s in Goodyear…. that’s a LOT closer than Peoria.

Only by a few miles

You might remember the aneurysm awareness ads she did during the season? Phil suffere an aneurysm and died in October 2007.

You should have printed out extra
You could have scalped them in the parking lot and made back your gas money.

Although
we DID have an extra ticket, since Zephon called me this morning to say he thought he was going to throw up.
Methinks Wes might be pregnant.

So while we were there there was this crazy woman yelling at the players. I started trying to catch her but instead caught a silly random conversation from the stands.
FOR WARNING, THIS ISN’T SAFE FOR WORK/KIDS. There be curses and such.

Crazy woman in the stands...
I bet you’re talking about Big Mouth aka Superfan Susan…a short lady with blonde-almost-white shoulder-length hair and a manly deep voice…always clapping, cheering, and yelling at the players? She sits in the front or near the front at the games…Chad Tracy hates her but is way too nice to tell her to shut the hell up LOL
When the DBacks would be on the road she would fo to Tucso0n and watch the Winders play. When I lived down there I went to a ton of games and sat by 3rd base line on the home team side of the field…anywho, Big Mouth would stand right behind the dugout, first row, and do her thing. Alan Zinter and Chad Tracy would pound on the inner roof of the dugout yelling at her to STFU.
Some of the players like her, others are annoyed by her. The woman is a retired rock band manager with money out her teeth and an OBSESSION for the Dbacks. She’s a season ticket holder, has been featured in the newspaper and onthe local news…she’s damn-near stalker status, according to other fans and those players who hate her
"AUGIE AUGIE AUGIE...OY OY OY!"
She kinda creeps me out
I sat a couple rows behind her at a Spring Training game in March- this was during batting practice, and she still was screaming the whole time. Yeesh.

Creepy indeed!
Supposedly she got married last season or the season before and her new husband doesn’t care for baseball, so she and he do their own things apart, activity-wise at least. She knows more about the players than the media guide LOL She stands at the top of the parking garage overlooking the players’ lot about 5 hours before a game and SCREAMS down to the players as they arrive…she’s even been to a few of the players’ homes! To me that’s just weird…that’s borderline stalker! She’s old enough to be the MOTHER of a few players too! I have talked to her many times at games…she is friendly, but she’s just odd. But if I had the $$$$ that woman has, I’d probably be odd too LOL!
Before the very last game this year, Dan Haren came out of the locker room and presented her (Susan is her name) with her very own DBacks white jersey, signed by every player on the team and on the back it says SUSAN 1. Must be nice, but then I can’t gripe. I also got a present…a bat from Augie and he signed it for me too :)
"AUGIE AUGIE AUGIE...OY OY OY!"
Yeah.
Jim was giving us the rundown at the game.

She's paid huh ?
I could make her my sugar momma and calm her down.
I laugh until my head comes off.
Interesting. Didn't know the background
Seen her many times at games all over the place. By most accounts I’ve heard, she’s nice, but yeah, obsession seems the right word. I mean, I’m fairly obsessed with the D-backs too, but she does seem to take it to the extreme! Couple of pieces on her:

"Win, or die" -- Marquise de Merteuil
AFL
I’m thinking of going to the Scorpions/Desert Dogs game on Friday. Is there any way to find out who is pitching for either team? I see SS pitched yesterday. Which kind of bums me out – maybe you all will get to see him in the rising stars game?
Also – any advice for the game?
Difficult to say in the Fall League
You might want to look at the previous Saturday’s box-score – there’s no Sunday game, so if they have a five-man rotation, the starter that day would be scheduled to pitch on Friday. I’ve little doubt Strassburg will be in the Rising Stars game.
As for advice… I got nothing much. It’s very, very relaxed. You can pick a seat and stick with it, or meander around the park as you please. Just be careful with your comments, because you know they can hear you [coughJustincough!]

Appreciated
Reading over the press release it looks like most of the top pitching prospects left, will probably pitch on Saturday. Would be fun to go to if it weren’t at the same time as the ASU game.
