Rauch PTBNL = Kevin Mulvey
They didn't keep us waiting TOO long, although I was starting to feel like the punch line in the "how do you keep an idiot in suspense" joke. The good folks at KTAR announced our haul for Rauch today, RHP Kevin Mulvey:
http://ktar.com/?sid=1205617&nid=184
The article is short, but this tidbit sticks out:
"The 24-year-old started all 24 games he appeared in, throwing 149 innings and striking out 113."
149 innings and an ERA of 3.93. Aside from the fact that he's another RHP, this might turn out well for us. Is he our 5th starter for next year (Webb, Haren, Scherzer, Petit/Mulvey/Buckner/TBA)?
A dedicated Twins fan posted this info on Mulvey in February -- it looks like this guy might be ready for the majors NOW. Perhaps he'll take Garland's place on Thursday?
http://joshsopinion.blogspot.com/2009/02/top-50-twins-prospects-2009-7-kevin.html
Also...he was called up by the Twins in July. His last outing was rough to say the least:

I have to say...I like how the trade looks on paper. Exchanging Rauch for a possible 3-4-5 starter? Let's hope it works!

Katers just told me.
Has he actually cleared waivers yet, though? He wouldn’t be able to come to Arizona unless he did

Hmmm....
according to that Yahoo! link, he’s been claimed by us, so, yeah. He’s ours.
I wouldn’t be too worried about a 3.93 ERA in the PCL, but a 3.93 in the IL is a bit more worrisome…

This is dumb.

Though I edited the title to make it clear which PTBNL we were talking about here. :-)

Mulvey great value for a Rauch...What Next....
Josh Byrnes pulled off a solid trade for Rauch. Great value for a potential solid arm. I just hope he gets as good a value for Jon Garland, especially since we are picking up his tab for awhile.
I just hope that we DON"T get Tony Abreu, like all the speculation has been that it will be. We have enough 2B in the minors that can hit .295, 8+ HR and 50+ RBI. Rusty Ryal or Augie Ojeda as well as prospects Pedro Ciriaco and Mark Hallberg come to mind.
I know Abreu has been hurt a lot in his young career so it is tough to say what his ceiling is. But at 5’9" and 200 pounds he is NOT going to get much bigger and probably has reached his peak.
JUST to put is simply we need ARMS. Our defense has been pretty solid this year. A bolstered bullpen and a solid 4 or 5 starter and we can be a threat next year. Much of the minors is a year or so away from being legit Major League Arms: Jarrod Parker (shut down for remainder of the year), Barry Enright, aren’t ready Wes Roemer. Travis Blackley, Cesar Valdez and Travis Blackley are the closest we have to being read to make the step up to the majors.
Well here is keeping my fingers crossed X

Matt Torra?
You must really like Travis Blackley, incidentally.

Travis Blackley?
Rofl. Cabrera, Augenstein, Buckner are all better than Blackley. Hallberg is fading a little, although Ciriaco has been a monster. Augie sucks. Ryal is at his peak, although it’s a servicable peak.

I agree with your sentiment, Snakebit. I just don’t understand the deal unless our FO: 1) has a deal lined up for Ryal/Roberts; 2) knows something we don’t about Ryal/Roberts; 3) knows something we don’t know about Abreu (like he’s going to grow six inches in the off season and gain 55 pounds of muscle).

They know he has a higher ceiling
And is 24, instead of being 28 (RyRo) or 26 (Ryal). Ryal has some potential, but I wouldn’t count on him as an everyday guy. Abreu could be an everyday guy. The kid has power (.609 SLG, .258 ISO). You don’t have to be huge to have that.

He's 24...
And I don’t know why. He should have gotten an opportunity earlier. He looks to be a good 3-4 guy, or long relief. Overall, that was a sweet trade for us, considering what we gave up was a garbage reliever in Rauch. Nice one Byrnesy!
"Garbage Reliever"
might be misworded, but I agree with the fact that it was a good deal. He’ll end up in a rotation somewhere is a fairly safe assumption, I think.

Eh.
I went over the top with “garbage”, but I never liked Rauch.
LOL, I just realized, Mulvey actually WASN"T the player traded for Rauch, but he was claimed off of waivers, so it only appears that way.
by CaptainCanuck on Sep 2, 2009 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions
Are you sure?
IIRC, that’s how the Dbacks will have to get their return, since it’s past the trade deadline.

Waivers run all year.
But players have to be on the team by Sept 1 to be eligible for the playoff roster. Since the D-backs won’t make the playoffs, it won’t matter. I actually don’t know how the trade went through though…

Meh, I think it was two separate transactions, but we lost Rauch, and got Mulvey. Virtually a trade, so it doesn’t matter.
by CaptainCanuck on Sep 2, 2009 6:34 AM EDT up reply actions
I don't think it was.
Typically, you don’t bring a minor leaguer to the bigs, let him pitch 2 games, and then just let him get away on waivers for free. I think the reason we claimed him from the Twins was because he’s our payoff for the Rauch trade.
Yes, waivers run all year, but it’s only after the July 31st trade deadline that both players must clear waivers to be traded.
"In the future, I want to be a fossil. Or, at least have my feces be fossilized"
-Pygalgia
Here's the skinny
To get Mulvey, they wound up claiming him off waivers from the Twins, acquiring him for "cash considerations" and then the Twins sent "cash considerations" to the Diamondbacks to complete the Rauch deal. Technically, it was two separate deals. And apparently it needed to go down that way to abide by the commissioner’s office’s rules. Claiming him was a way of keeping Mulvey from having to clear through the other 23 or so teams on waivers.

Lol I dunno I’m still confused haha. Whatever, it’s not a big deal.

They're two different transactions
but only because the trade was completed after the “trade deadline”. Officially, we gave Rauch to the Twins for “cash considerations” (which, in these cases, usually means $1). Similarly, the Twins gave us Mulvey for cash considerations.
But in reality, they were just the two sides of the trade.
"In the future, I want to be a fossil. Or, at least have my feces be fossilized"

Oh, haha.
Whatever, let’s just call it a trade considering we lost Rauch to the Twinkies, and got Mulvey from them. Heh.

interesting little scenario. didn’t know about this practice.

Indeed.
A similar situation actually happened between the Mets/Red Sox in the Wagner deal… The Mets were supposed to receive Chris Carter in return via waivers, but the Yankees placed a claim on him instead, screwing over the Sox. Good ol’ bitter rivalry…

Why would you trade
Chris Carter for Billy Wagner… Wagner’s been hurt all year.

Chris Carter of Boston, not Chris Carter of Oakland.

or do you mean Chris Carter formerly of the Vikings? So confused.

Chris Carter who plays for the Red Sox, the sucky Chris Carter.
Chris Carter of the Sox is worth a reliever of Wagner’s ability…
When IHateSouthBend said, " Why would you trade Chris Carter for Billy Wagner… Wagner’s been hurt all year."
It sounded to me like he was confusing him with Chris Carter of the A’s, instead of Chris Carter that plays for the Sox, considering A’s Chris Carter is actually a nifty prospect, and is much more valuable than Wagner.
Yeah, I guess that makes sense, but I confused myself a tad bit while typing that out…

It was just used
Because otherwise we’d have to wait until the end of the season in order to complete the trade, and we want Mulvey for the bullpen now.

No he was.
We had to either make a waiver claim on the player or hope he passed through waivers in order to acquire him. Since we already knew we were going to acquire him, we made the claim and nobody else with a worse record than us did so we could complete the trade now.
