Gameday Thread, #111: 8/8 vs. Nationals

Arizona Diamondbacks at Washington Nationals, Aug 8, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

Ari_medium

Dan Haren
RHP, 11-6, 2.38

was_medium

Garrett Mock
RHP, 0-4, 6.75

Well, let's see how Haren is treated by home-plate umpire Jerry 'Napoleon' Crawford today, shall we? After last night's little encounter between the two, I am curious to see whether anything is carried forward. I trust that won't be the case - but it might well make things a great deal more interesting if they were. We could see Haren and his catcher 'accidentally' get crossed up, with a 95-mph Haren fastball pinging off  some part of Crawford. Not off his head, however: his skull appears to be by far the thickest and least-used part of Jerry's anatomy.

If Mock's name is familiar, it's because he was once a Diamondbacks prospect, who was sent to the Nationals as part of the Livan Hernandez deal in 2006, going there along with Matt Chico. The prospects we lost haven't exactly set the world: in seven career starts, Mock is 0-5 with 6.89 ERA, while Chico went 7-15 with a 4.98 ERA as a starter, before having elbow surgery in July last year, from which he is slowly making a return. I might be pushing the boat out here, but I wouldn't be surprised if Taco Bell ends up on the receiving end of another rush tomorrow afternoon.

Elsewhere, I note Jason Giambi was released by the A's. This is notable from an Arizonan point of view, because it leaves Chris Young as the only player in the majors with 300+ PAs, who is batting below the Uecker Line. Though, to be fair to Chris, nine of the 198 qualifying hitters have a worse OPS+ than his 70, including ex-Diamondback Emilio Bonifacio (61). Is he back in the line-up today? Let's see, shall we?

Line-up

  1. Stephen Drew SS
  2. Alex Romero LF
  3. Gerardo Parra RF
  4. Mark Reynolds 3B
  5. Miguel Montero C
  6. Josh Whitesell 1B
  7. Chris Young CF
  8. Augie Ojeda 2B
  9. Dan Haren P

Ah, yes - there he is. Still no Ryan Roberts, even though he was expected back with the team today, his wife having given birth to baby girl Hudsyn [a somewhat odd, but kinda cute, spellling] on Thursday. Maybe tomorrow...

Oh, you people...

With your “wireless connections” and “piggybacking.” I remember the days when the only way to experience baseball was at the park. Or peering through a knothole from the outside. Those were the days. We were poor, but happy… Well, actually, we were pretty miserable, but it was an honest misery…

Shenanigans

I am going to say Hudsyn isn’t cute it is obnoxious, I mean congratulations to both of them and I am totally sure the baby is adorable but … HUDSYN?

That is a life time of “No, um, Hud-sin… like Hudson but with a ‘y’ instead of an ‘o’? No, I’m a girl… yes that is really my name. No. It’s … you know what? Just call me Jane.”

The little retrospective of the 50 Greatest Moments FSN has been showing has been really interesting and made me totally nostalgic for two seasons ago. Granted I wasn’t here yet but it was honestly when I gave up on fighting it and learned to love the bomb Diamondbacks. :)

Thankfully

Of all the things we disagree over naming wise (he hates Lily. HOW DO YOU HATE LILY?) soco and I have agreed that the ’Huk’d awn Fonx’ spelling method is like… worse than naming your child after the food you craved while pregnant. Seriously, when kids come into my classroom with messed up spellings it is the WORST.

My sweet but naughty kitty is named Lily. How dare he.

I just counted and I am behind on reading the last 2,500 plus posts. Family issues continue to keep me from seeing nearly every game the last three weeks, except for the odd inning here and there. I did see Hinch ejected yesterday though.

And yet, in all seriousness, wants a son named Herschel. Boggle that. I have wanted a daughter named Lily since I was like 7! The jerk.

Sorry family life is crazy, but nice to have you back for what we can. :) I have been catching snatches but missing the good stuff. Such is life, I guess.

Don't ask

Seriously. I am fine, but my stepfather (who just got out of the recovery facility today) refuses to live in an assisted living facility due to the cost. He is afraid he won’t have any $$ to leave his 3 good for nothing children, two of whom haven’t even come to Phoenix from NJ and VA to see him since the surgery. He’s at home now, but he needs help as he never lifted a finger for the last 26 years and besides, the house is being readied for an estate sale and then the house will go on the market. The house was owned 100 percent by Mom (and the bank) and left to us, so he can’t stay there forever. We are doing what we can to help him find an apartment, but he really should be in a care facility with some help. Also he still wants to drive and refuses to give it up. He drives too fast, believe it or not, and hits parked cars all the time. Sigh.

We have settled on Henry and Evelyn… for now. My maiden name was Hughson

I don’t get what people’s damage is sometimes. It’s PHONETIC! Like Jackson or Johnson just… Hughson. I can’t imagine it is much better with Hudson, though you would think people would get the river?

We had a boy named Hudson in the baby room for a while, I think it is cute it just doesn’t give much leeway for nicknames which is kind of sad as it is also a bit formidable for a 2 year old. I have a cousin named Madyson, I tried to talk her out of that for the entire pregnancy. The ‘hip’ name thing right now is (__)ella and I swear if I see one more Izzybella or Ella or Stella I might scream. I loved Ella for so long but it gets frustrating distinguishing them.

My Mom always would say

“Hudson, like the river?” and people just could not figure that out. My brother got the nickname “Bay” for Hudson Bay when he was in college (at Notre Dame, IHSB!) and he still has people who call him that.

I think my pet peeve of names is the “y” like in Hudsyn and Madyson (although I’ve seen Madisyn, too.)

And randomly

Was just reading a review of the Dario Argento film Mother of Tears:

Asia Argento plays the daughter of a white witch who gave her life fighting the terrible Mater Lacrimosae, injuring that demoness in the process. Perhaps only Asia can defeat the returning witch-queen. In other words, Dario has basically nicked the plot of Harry Potter and thrown in some tits and gore.

Unfortunately, having seen it last night, it’s not even that good. :-(
