Justin Upton and the Visalia Rawhide
My friend's mom (she's like my second mom) Michelle and I headed to the San Jose Giants game this evening to see the Giants take on the Visalia Rawhide. Justin Upton's final line was 0 for 3, with a walk, two strikeouts, and reaching on a fielder's choice. He also stole a base (without getting hurt this time!). The plan is for Justin to play in this 3-game series with Visalia and then rejoin the team on Thursday in San Francisco. I don't know if 'rejoin' means 'activate' or not, but A.J. is very anxious to have him back!
A few notes and photos inside.
After we came in the gate, I double checked the big lineup - and sure enough, there was Justin, dry-erase-markered into the number 3 spot in the order!! I honestly didn't recognize any of the names but Skelton's (and San Jose has a Conor Gillaspie which confuses the heck out of me) but maybe a few of them are recent draft picks? See for yourself.
We got there too late for batting practice, but Justin, A.J. and two other organizational folks (see above) were chatting in the dugout. Before Justin went to get ready, I called him over to take a picture of him. I didn't bring anything for him to sign but some other folks did and he signed for a little while. I let A.J. continue to talk but when he had a break, I called out to him too, talked to him for a little bit, and told him I'd see him tomorrow. He came over as well to sign some cards for others. I wanted to talk to him more, because, well, I'm me, and I love talking to ballplayers, but I couldn't think of much. But he was very nice (and very good looking, just as I expected ;)) and I can't wait to see him again tomorrow.
Justin walked in the first inning - he hardly swung at anything, and though some pitches were close, the San Jose starter was clearly being very picky and may have been a little nervous. He attempted to steal but it didn't count, the guy behind him struck out or something. He got on base on a fielder's choice the next time, and successfully stole second (there wasn't even a throw), but didn't score. He struck out his next two times, first swinging, then looking (with a man on first) to end the 7th inning. In the 8th inning, he was replaced defensively. He didn't get many - if any! - opportunities in the outfield (he looked rather bored in fact), he ran towards center for a fly ball a few times, but rightfully gave way.
In the middle of the game, the Visalia center fielder made a SPECTACULAR running catch against the wall, but he was hurt and had to come out of the game. He's fine, but after he threw the ball in, he laid back down on the ground for a little and walked off with the trainer. (The left fielder moved to center, and in came a new left fielder.) We asked Justin about it after the game, and he said he hit his head on the wall. Trust me, that's all wall out there, no padding... he'll have quite a headache and bruised shoulder for a few days.
Something cool happened in the home half of the 6th that I missed because I was trying to get a churro. (I ended up talking with somebody who worked for the Sharks, and missed the churro maker.) There was a pop up somewhere and everybody started to walk back to the dugout and all of a sudden there's a fan noise and the players start walking back to their positions. So I guess it was dropped?? There also seemed to be some controversy in the 7th or 8th but I was hanging out in the tunnel trying not to seem stalkerish watching the Giants/Rockies game. I'm not sure how the runs were scored - Giants got 2 in the first, Rawhide came back with 1 in the 3rd I think, and the final score ended up 4-2 in favor of the Giants.
I don't think A.J. is worried about Upton's 0-fer night, but I don't think he looked very comfortable at the plate yet. They will give him at least tomorrow's game as well (because that's what Justin said). A.J. actually left after two at-bats and before Upton's strikeouts - he had two of Visalia's 8 Ks on the night. (At least I think he was gone by then, because I went by the door for a while after the third at-bat and didn't see him leave. ;)) The Rawhide starting pitcher though, man, he was annoying. Quite a few baserunners, his pitch count seemed to get high pretty quickly because the first few innings went on forever! He was frustrating to watch because you could tell he was missing his pitches because he got frustrated with himself. There were quite a few errors (or at least miscues) during the game, but that's typical for this level.
So... yeah. That's Justin Upton in Class A. He'd never been to the stadium, because he only spent about a month in A ball when he first joined the team. He's actually staying with the team in San Francisco and has a nice town car and driver for the 50 mile journey to the city. That's what you get when you're an All-Star! ;)

Visalia Rawhide
Thanks for the pictures! My husband was at the game last night too (wish I could have traveled with him) and had a great time. It’s funny that he never told me that AJ was there too. We are traveling back up to San Jose tonight to watch the team play again, with me included this time. The next time you are around, root for the Rawhide…they need your support!

I may have seen him?
There were a few gentlemen in Dbacks jerseys hanging around waiting for autographs where I was. Was he in the red jersey or the black? :)

To be honest...
I’m not sure what he was wearing since I wasn’t there. He might have been wearing his green Visalia jersey we got last year. If he was wearing his D-Backs jersey, it was his red one because he doesn’t have a black one.

Great update
Even when the season goes poorly, this is the kind of fan access that makes me love baseball. Thanks for taking us along for the trip.

Thanks :)
Yeah Class A ball is certainly a different experience. The stadium is so small and you’re right on the field that it honestly seems like the field is smaller!! But, no, it’s still 90 feet on the basepaths, 60’6" to home…. it just seems smaller.

So let me understand
There were less than 75 beer kiosks, no in-game hostess, gigantic scoreboard, Fatburger or Rallybacks in hot pants shooting frozen burritos from bazookas – just really green grass and AJ’s exquisitely moussed hair?
Is…this….heaven?

I stand corrected
..poor single A San Jose just set their fourth consecutive seasonal attendance record. So, Jim’s right. They’re in obvious need of, like, three Fatburgers ;-)
The serious point I was trying to make is there’s little if any connection between the in-game fluff the Dbacks have championed, ostensibly “for the fans”, and increased attendance or fan satisfaction.

I think they average about 4K per night
And they just added a video scoreboard last year. But yeah, I agree with you. :) They do have activities on the field between innings with fan participation, like they do at most minor league parks. I agree, I do NOT like the “host” they have in Arizona, it is way too juvenile for a big-league club.

You're right
- the minors are famous for ‘juvenile’ activities too, but for some reason, I embrace extracirricular silliness in the minors, whereas the dog and pony show tends to irk me at Chase. I’m still thinking through why that is.

Yeah, I definitely agree
It just seems… not quite right at the major league level. Some things are cute – like the sausage race – and at other clubs they have the dot racing or find something under the cup – and in SF they have a few contestant activities but it’s all on the scoreboard and it doesn’t interfere with on-the-field activities.

One thing that struck me
about your San Jose photos and comments was the intimacy and immediacy of “the game”. Look at the second to last pic, where every fan’s focused on the field. Why is that?
Is single A more intrinsically exciting than MLB product? Doubtful. Does it have as much star appeal? No. Are minor league fans more often baseball “purists” by nature? Not sure. Could be.
Maybe there’s something about the minors’ smaller venues that “overcomes” the distractions and naturally brings focus back to “the game”. I just feel like at Chase there’s a distance. Physical distance obviously, but conscious activities intended to distance me from “the game”.
The huge hi-def scoreboard is intended to move eyeballs away from the grass – and it does with amazing success. The in-house hosts distance fans from their own spontaneous reactions and direct emotional connections to the team. Fans can certainly summon sufficient free will to watch baseball; I just think there’s this concerted effort, this intention, to distract fans from the grass, the leather and the gentle rhythyms of the game, borne out of a mindset baseball doesnt sell itself.
I like a little silliness and am not talking about getting rid of everything, or the postgame fireworks, concerts, etc – I think they’re fun and good marketing. I’m talking about the plethora of crap that directly competes with the game in real time. Once the game starts, turn down the volume, ease off the sell. Show the game some respect and fans will do the same.

The more Dbacks games I watch,
the more I’m starting to agree with you on this point.
And conclude that either A. most Dbacks fans are idiots, or B. the Dbacks’ FO are convinced that most Dbacks fans are idiots, or C. both of the above.

I have to wonder what was going through their manager’s head (of the San Jose Giants) at the time…. “Okay, so my pitcher just loaded the bases in front of Justin Upton. I see no way this could possibly go badly…”

J-Up....
was the beer batter for the night and hit a powerful gradslam to give the Rawhide the lead and then had another homerun to follow by cather Konrad Schmidt for a five run inning. It was awesome to watch! As he was leaving the stadium, he told us that he was hoping to be activated before tonights game. He was not staying with the Rawhide, but driving 45-minutes to San Francisco to stay with the big club.

Haha, I was betting they would make him the beer batter tonight
How could they not?? :)
Yeah, I am betting he is activated before tonight’s game. A.J. was anxious to have him back, he just needed to see some live pitching. He didn’t look comfortable at the plate on Monday but clearly is getting his swing back!

Well,
I’m not convinced that a home run against a Single-A pitcher is necessarily “getting your swing back”, especially a pitcher who had just loaded the bases, but here’s hoping!!

He just needed to see live pitching and get comfortable in the box again. He didn’t look good Monday, but all he needs is a few hits to get him going.

Beer Batter.....
in San Jose is for 15 minutes, in Visalia, it’s the rest of the inning. I guess it’s a Cal League thing. The home team picks a player from the opposing team, sometimes either a former player or MLB player on a rehab assignment, if they are down, and if the batter strikes out, it’s cheap beer through the 7th inning. Last year, Eric Byrnes was the beer batter at the San Jose game, and struck out at least once, if I remember correctly.
by Mrs. Snakebit on Aug 26, 2009 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like
this idea, except that I fear that Upton, Reynolds and CY would give other teams’ fans too much cheap beer.
