DFA Tony Clark, please
Tony Clark went 0-for-4 tonight, with two double-plays, dropping his season average to a meagre .175. If you cross Opening Day off, his line on the year is even more embarrassing .151/.292/.321. The question I want to ask is simple: why is he still on the roster?
This is not a team in the heat of a pennant-race, who might require a cool head in the locker-room. And even if that was the case, he could still provide that in the role of a coaching assistant, special adviser, creator of catchy slogans, or whatever position we want to make up. I don't think anyone doubts Clark has plenty he can still offer as a mentor: the question is, what does he bring to the team by being on the 25-man roster?
The answer to that appears to be, very little. He has to cheat to hit even average fastballs these days, he runs the bases at the speed of Pablo Sandoval on Vicodin, and the myth of his defensive superiority largely died in the game against Seattle where he dropped a simple throw, giving the Mariners a walk-off win. For a team supposedly building for the future to be giving any playing time at all to Clark is a mixed message at best. Personally, I think Clark should be, gently but firmly, put out to grass and Josh Whitesell installed as the main first-base alternative - with the aim of getting him ready to occupy the position on a regular basis in 2010.
But what do you think?

Make that eight
Because I could never be any more confused as to why Clark is still on the roster let alone on the field.

With what we've heard
about the team’s locker room atmosphere, it looks like TC’s veteran presence is batting less than .200 too.
"We...probed them all the way through. They're completely meat." — Terry Bisson
id understand if we had no other options
but with reynolds/tracy/ojeda and wilson if we brought him backup to man the corners it seems silly to give bats to TC over whitesell.
ive been a huge fan of whitesell since i found him like a hidden gem in the nationals organization while i was scouting for fantasy baseball – i was loud in asking my league mates, Why does no one believe in this whitesell kid?? he is hitting 30 HR a year in AA and AAA. i hear about prospects who after hitting 11 homers in A ball are now certain sluggers in the majors, what gives.
whitesell has struggled a bit, a huge amount of bad luck, and bad situation during his major league stint – like anyone remember that felipe lopez double take on 3rd base then getting nailed at the plate creating the FC that took away whitesell’s first single and rbi???
at this point in the season, i want to bring up all the guys with a future in this club, especially whitesell and let them get the hang of what it takes and go forward – with that id also like to see schlereth back up and id like us to give any other pitcher in our organization a chance at any spot coming up in the rotation outside of petit and honestly, keep buckner starting on the road and see if he can keep his groove on the road
I have mostly supported front office decisions
Our FO has been far from perfect (Carlos Q/Byrnes stands out the most) but for the most part, the actions that have been taken have been well thought out and it has been somewhat hard to find fault in their reasoning. The results might not always pan out like we want them to, but it has been difficult to question the logic, for example, of trading Jose Valverde instead of paying him $8mm/yr and getting Qualls, Guitierrez and Burke for him. Granted, not all of the moves have worked out, but like I said, the moves are usually well thought out and for the most part make sense.
That is where the Clark/Whitesell situation just baffles me—it makes ZERO sense to have Josh playing in AAA where we already know that he can hit and not in the big leagues to see if he is your (very affordable and quite possibly productive) answer at 1B every day next year. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, pinch hit HRs by Tony be damned (all ONE of them). And to answer Moozazan (above), I remember that Lopez baserunning gaffe very clearly—I couldn’t believe the play at all—I was watching the RF field the ball and throw and thought to myself “Why in the world would Hale send the guy from 2nd (I think it was Upton) home on that play? He is going to be a dead duck!” Only that it was Lopez robbing Whitesell of his first clutch hit and 1st RBI.
DFA Tony…Free Josh Whitesell!!!
Service time, perhaps?
That’s pretty much the only reason I can think of to keep Whitesell in Reno.
Well, maybe he just likes blackjack?

After the Allen trade... This is irrelevant
Whitesell is suddenly a stop-gap guy. Ouch. But this means TC is outta here. It has to…

Or else
TC is our 1B of the future, and we’re going to package Allen with Gerardo Parra, Justin Upton and Jarrod Parker to trade for Roy Halladay.

They'd probably ask for Reynolds too
God forbid the Jays don’t get enough value for Halladay when they’re buried behind three of the best teams in baseball in their division.

TC stop trying to fool us we know that is you with that lone vote to be a backup...
I love TC and love what he has done for us but he is hurting us more than helping us at this point. Time to thank him for his time and DFA him.
What was Josh Whitsell's numbers
while he was around ?
If I see one more Eric Byrnes 'flip throw' I will shoot myself a whole bunch of times.
Improving, while
TC’s have been going south

Overall
Hit .214 with almost as many BB as K’s, for an OBP of .362. However, he was a lot better in his second spell with the team: .300/.447/.467 for a .914 OPS. Small sample size warning, obviously [that was only 11 games], but he is far more credible a candidate for 2010 than Clark, who will only be older and slower. Happens to us all. :-)

Whitesell was second in June OPS
Amongst the entire roster. Just behind, of all of the demi-gods to walk the earth, Dan Haren.

Agreed: DFA
given that I doubt we could get anything in trade for him (although a pizza would be a nice deal), his future is in a coaching role. While I’m somewhat skeptical about Whitesell’s abilities at the major league level, there’s nothing to lose at this time.

I agree completely, I said almost the exact same thing in the game thread from the Mariners game where he dropped the ball. Time to make him a Bench Coach, look to the future.
I want to have a few beers
with TC and then pick a fight with Rausch
If I see one more Eric Byrnes 'flip throw' I will shoot myself a whole bunch of times.
John Raucsh looks like a cross eyed dolphin who is high

However
He is still 6’10" and heavily tattooed. I would suggest you are likely better off having a few drinks with Rauch and then kicking Tony Clark’s ass. ;-) He does have that whole ‘turn the other cheek’ thing, which would work in your favor during a fight…
"Win, or die" -- Marquise de Merteuil
Plus
His veteran presence means he can probably give you a few pointers on your uppercut.
And I wouldn’t worry about facing Tony in a fight. Even without his “turn the other cheek” attitude, we’ve learned this season that TC just can’t hit anything.
Dood cmon
Im 6 foot and have a few tats. Does that make me a bad ass street fighter ? No, of course not. Being ttly wasted and hammered out of my mind, does however, give my body and brain the infoulable inpression that I am.
Looks mean nothing. I’m a mean looking guy(nothing intentional) and I’d like to consider myself fit and kinda buff but I will straight up tun into a 6 yr old girl if I see a cockroach or any other flying beetle type insect. Unless of course I’ve been drinking…….then it’s on.
If I see one more Eric Byrnes 'flip throw' I will shoot myself a whole bunch of times.

you pick fights with flying insects?

And walls...

I hate
fighting walls. The wall usually wins.

Then you have to sufffer even more shame by fixing the wall you damaged.

Allen forces the situation with Clark/Whitesell/Tracy?
Allen’s reportedly being sent to Reno. Clark, Whitesell, and Tracy are healthy. Something’s gotta give, no?
Meanwhile, Whitesell’s been out the last few days to be with his wife for the birth of their first child…wouldn’t like this news if I were him but at least it means something’s gotta happen.
DFA Clark, simultaneously offering him a coaching job,
trade Tracy, and let Whitesell start the rest of the year at 1B. He’s auditioning for his job.

I think the biggest point people miss is Whitesell's age
The guy’s already 28. He rose up through the Nats system and couldn’t break through before becoming a FA and then we picked him up. He’s currently in his prime. So… we should bring him up and see what that is… Sigh, I thought this trade would mean the end of Clark. I think everyone did (or at least hoped).

It may still be.

DFA Tony Clark
and give the playing time at third to that scrappy kid Ryan Roberts. I think that kid is going to be something special.
He's not quite a kid
Too old. Augie 2.0. Career backup.
